Flowery Branch, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Atlanta Falcons placed safety William Moore on injured reserve Tuesday. Moore had been placed on injured reserve/designated to return on Sept. 30 after he separated his shoulder in a Week 4 loss at Minnesota. The 2012 Pro Bowl selection missed seven games then returned on Nov. 30 against Arizona, played one more game before sitting out on Dec. 14 against the Steelers, and suffered a shoulder injury in last Sundays 30-14 win in New Orleans. A sixth-year pro out of Missouri, Moore finishes the 2014 season with 25 tackles in seven appearances. Atlanta signed safety Sean Baker to the active roster and inked running back Ronnie Wingo to the practice squad. Stitched NFL Jerseys . -- Phil Mickelson came to the St.VANCOUVER -- Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson has seen his fair share of strange injuries over the years, and Nigel Reo-Cokers bizarre mishap is just another one to add to the list. Reo-Coker is expected to miss the Major League Soccer clubs game this weekend against the Houston Dynamo with a concussion after he tripped over a bike rack and banged his head in Vancouver on Sunday. The 29-year-old midfielder missed Tuesdays training session and was absent again on Wednesday, with Robinson revealing that Reo-Coker will likely sit out against the Dynamo. "Hes a little bit bruised and cut," said Robinson. "Hes not here with us today but we hope he makes a speedy recovery and hopefully (is) back very soon." A former Welsh international during his playing days, Robinson said Reo-Cokers tumble ranks among some of the more odd injuries hes come across. "Ive seen a few and heard a few in my time, picking up a remote control and pulling your hamstring and things like that. Its one of them that fits into that category," said Robinson. "Its quite a serious injury for him but its one that makes you chuckle when you hear about it and the story. Its a strange one." The injury occurred after Reo-Coker had returned with his teammates to Vancouver following the Whitecaps 0-0 road ddraw against the New England Revolution on Saturday afternoon.dddddddddddd "He just fell and tripped. I dont think he was looking where he was going, which is never a good sign for a midfield player," Robinson deadpanned, before adding: "Obviously youve got to be very careful with head injuries these days. "Hes done the concussion test and there was a slight issue so it was a little bit worrisome but hes fine. I spoke to him for half an hour today in the office. Its normal Nige back." Reo-Coker has started all three games for Vancouver (1-0-2) so far this season, but was subbed off after 70 minutes on Saturday in favour of Gershon Koffie, who seems like the most obvious candidate to take the Englishmans place in the lineup against Houston (2-0-0) this Saturday. A box-to-box central midfielder, Reo-Coker joined the Whitecaps in February 2013 after stops with Wimbledon, Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United in his home country. He started 31 MLS games for Vancouver last season, collecting one goal and four assists. Reo-Coker has one assist in 220 minutes of action so far in 2014. "Youre always due for one or two strange injuries a season," said Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit. "You feel for Nigel. Hell have to answer you to how it all happened." ' ' '

Zach Parise of the Minnesota Wild will be the captain of the U.S. mens hockey team at the Sochi Olympics. Minnesota defenceman Ryan Suter and centre Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings will be the alternate captains, U.S. general manager David Poile announced Friday. The 29-year-old Parise was an alternate captain at the Vancouver Olympics four years ago, scoring the goal that sent the gold-medal game into overtime. He has experience on U.S. national teams going back to 2002, and he welcomed the chance to take a leadership role in his second Olympics. "Its a special thing to be named captain of any team, but when its a national team, an Olympic team, its extra special," Parise said. "Weve got a lot of players who are great leaders. Im going to get a lot of help. Im going to need a lot of help. Its very humbling." U.S. coach Dan Bylsma said Parises work ethic and no-nonsense playing style are exemplary of the attitude he wants for his team. The Americans arent considered a gold-medal favourite, but a roster packed with NHL star power is expected to keep them in contention. "Were a team thats got a blue-collar mentality, and Zach embodies that," said Bylsma, also the coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. "Every time we play against Zach Parise, there has been a work ethic, a never-quit, a determination, an abrasiveness about a hard-to-play-against type of player. And its every time regardless of the score (or) the situation our respective teams might be in. That is exactly how we want our team to play." Parises alternate captains have extensive leadership experience as well. Brown and Suter were both alternate captains to Jamie Langenbrunner on the U.S. team at the Vancouver Olympics. Brown is the longtime captain of the Kings and an international veteran, while Suter and Parise are both alternate captains of the Wild. Suters father, Bob, won a gold medal with the "Miracle on Ice" team in 1980. "Theres plenty of guys that wear letters with their own teams, so I dont think our team is going to be lacking in leadership at all," Parise said. "There are plenty of guys that are capable of doing that." The American team will hold its first practice in Sochi late on Feb. 10. Most players wont arrive until a few hours earlier, after the NHL begins its schedule break. Parise acknowledged the unique challenges of the Sochi Olympics, including the players adjustment to a hefty time change in just a few days before their first game against Slovakia on Feb. 13. He also recognized security concerns around the Olympics, calling it "unfortunate" that security "has dominated a lot of the conversation." "You have to put your trust in the Russian police and the security were sending over there as well," Parise said. "Were going to be in good hands. We can just relax, focus and concentrate on playing hockey." Fernando Rodney Jersey . But the young forward is more than willing to shed a little blood if thats what it takes to make the team this season. "It caught me pretty good, dazed me for that shift, but I didnt want to be off the ice for too long," he said after practice, his lip still bleeding a little despite the plastic stitches holding it together. Michael Pineda Jersey . -- Keith Aulie has joined the Tampa Bay Lightning. http://www.twinsrookiestore.com/Twins-Jake-Odorizzi-Kids-Jersey/ .com) - Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight was carted off the field in the fourth quarter of 16th-ranked Sooners 48-14 loss to No. Harmon Killebrew Jersey . He learned about pressure and expectations at the 2010 Games in his hometown of Vancouver. His next mission is to build on that experience at his next Olympic appearance in Sochi, where he plans to ride the momentum from the teams strong start to the season. Ervin Santana Jersey . Hes had three top-10 results this season and feels ready to put it all together and finally hoist a trophy at the top level.MINNEAPOLIS -- Anthony Swarzak, for an afternoon at least, was a starter again. He pitched like he didnt want to go back to the bullpen. The rest of the Minnesota relievers picked him up with a strong performance in his honour. Swarzak pitched five sharp innings in a short-notice start, Oswaldo Arcia homered and the Twins beat the Cleveland Indians 3-1 Wednesday. "I missed that. That was fun," Swarzak said. Danny Santana scored after two of his three hits for the Twins, and five relief pitchers totalled six strikeouts over four scoreless innings. Glen Perkins finished up in the ninth for his 24th save in 27 tries. When Kyle Gibson developed a sore back the day before, Swarzak (2-0) was summoned from the bullpen to fill in. He threw 75 pitches, 15 over the limit the Twins had in mind, but the right-hander allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out three. He was only in trouble once. The Twins were worried about his stamina, but he still hit 93 mph on the radar in the fifth. "When youre in as good a shape as him, and the hard work that he does in that training room and everywhere else in running and throwing, he can handle those things," manager Ron Gardenhire said. Swarzak has made 29 career starts dating back to 2009, but this was his first since Oct. 2, 2012. Such a surprise assignment can be a challenge for a pitcher, less than 14 hours after finding out, but that can also work against an opponent that hasnt fully prepared to face him. "Our hope would be to get the pitch counts up, give him a couple long innings and make them use their bullpen. We couldnt," Indians manager Terry Francona said. Four of Swarzazks five innings were perfect. "I felt like I mightve had a little bit more in the tank," Swarzak said. "Ive always been a guy when Ive started to get stronger as the outing goes forward and have the best stuff in the last inning Ive thrown. In the third, Jose Ramirez poked a perfectly placed double down the third base line to drive in a run. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez made a slick diving stab of Michael Branntleys sharp line drive up the middle, ending the inning with runners at second and third.dddddddddddd "Play of the game, hands down. Thats why we won," Swarzak said. How the Twins needed this performance by Swarzak. They gave up 14 runs over the first three innings combined during the first five games of his homestand, losing four of those. After a recent return to respectability, the rotation has begun to backslide toward the level of those rough last three seasons. Trevor Bauer (4-5) struck out seven in six innings, but he lost for the first time in five July starts. Bauer gave up a triple to Santana in the third, followed by an RBI single to Sam Fuld. In the fifth, Brian Dozier drove in Santana with double. Then in the sixth, Arcia hit his two-out solo shot into the right field seats. "It was a fastball, exactly where I wanted to put it," Bauer said. That was Arcias second homer in his last 35 games. The Indians have only one error over their last 10 games. Their hitting with runners in scoring position has been productive lately. Their starting pitching has, too. But they still lost two of three to the Twins, after winning a four-game series at division-leading Detroit to close in on the Tigers in the AL Central race. NOTES: The Twins plan to slide Gibson back into the rotation Saturday if hes ready. "Thats just a hope. You never know with a back," manager Ron Gardenhire said. ... The Indians move on to Kansas City Thursday for a four-game series, with RH Corey Kluber (10-6, 2.95 ERA) starting opposite LH Danny Duffy (5-10, 2.66 ERA) of the Royals. Kluber has allowed only 10 earned runs over his last six turns, totalling 44 strikeouts and only seven walks in 43-plus innings. ... The Twins begin a four-game series here Thursday against Chicago, with RH Phil Hughes (10-6, 4.05 ERA) pitching and RH Hector Noesi (4-7, 5.21 ERA) taking the mound for the White Sox. Hughes and Kevin Correia are the only Twins who have made every start this season. ... Bauer finished six innings for the 11th time in 14 starts this season. ' ' '

SAN ANTONIO -- "Beat the Heat!" had a whole new meaning in a sweltering start to the NBA Finals. The San Antonio Spurs handled the conditions, and the team, and it sure helped when a suffering LeBron James couldnt make it to the finish. Tim Duncan had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and the Spurs beat the Heat 110-95 on Thursday night in Game 1 at steamy AT&T Center. With an air conditioning failure making it feel like a sauna and causing James to battle cramps that knocked him out of the decisive stretch, the Spurs pulled away to win the opener of the first finals rematch since 1998. "After I came out of the game, they kind of took off," James said. "And it was frustrating sitting out and not be able to help our team." Manu Ginobili had 16 points and 11 assists, Tony Parker added 19 points and eight assists and the Spurs -- 6 for 6 in NBA Finals Game 1s -- shot 59 per cent. "Just very proud of my team," Parker said. "We kept believing, kept pushing. We know its not easy." They host Game 2 on Sunday -- likely in cooler conditions. James finished with 25 points but played only 33 minutes, and Miami was outscored 36-17 in the fourth quarter. "It sucks not being out there for your team, especially at this point in the season," James said. Dwyane Wade had 19 points and Chris Bosh added 18, but the Heat wilted in temperatures that soared to 90 degrees in the second half. "It was tough on both teams," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They were pretty dead. We tried to get guys in and out. ... It was really hot out there." James, who had cramping issues two years ago in the finals, had to ask for a break in the fourth quarter and was getting treatment during a 15-4 Spurs run that turned around the game. James came back in and made a basket that cut it to two points with about 4 minutes left, but couldnt even run back on defence, promptly putting his hand up and lingering at the baseline until help arrived to take him off for good. "I think it felt like a punch in the gut when you see your leader limping like that back to the bench," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. Danny Green followed with 3-pointer to trigger what became a 16-3 run to end the game. "You could see the heat was getting to a lot of guys. If I played as many minutes as he did, Id probably be cramping up, too," said Green, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the final quarter. The crowd chanted "Beat the Heat! Beat the Heat!" late in the game, which was just what the fans themselves were trying to do. The Spurs said an electrical failure for the power that runs the air conditioning system had occurred. They apologized for the inconvenience but also seemed to poke fun of it, playing songs with "hot" in the lyrics over the sound system. Fans were trying to cool themselves on the hot night, a reminder of what it was like in the old Boston Garden when the Celtics and Lakers got together. The Heat are the first team since those Celtics of 1984-87 to get to four straight finals. They are well-rested after a relatively easy roll through the Eastern Conference playoffs, a key to keeping Wade healthy entering the finals. James was the MVP of the series last year when the Heat rallied from five points down in the final half-minute of regulation to win Game 6 in overtime, then won a Game 7 that was close the whole way for their second straight championship. A rematch was widely anticipated and was close almost throughout. The Heat led 86-79 after Boshs four-point play with 9:38 remaining in the game, but it was all San Antonio from there, and Wade said there were problems even beyond James absence. "Obviously, tonight we wouldve loved to have him in there to finish the game, but weve got to finish the game better," Wade said. The Spurs ended up extending their NBA-record streak to eight straight home playoff wins by 15 or more points. Their roster is filled with international players, such as Parker and Ginobili, who both said they were used to playing without air conditioning overseas. Bosh, scoreless in Game 7 last year, scored Miamis first five points in the Heats 7-2 start. But Ginobili came off the bench firing, making consecutive 3-pointers for an 18-13 lead. Wade and James combined for six straight points before Ginobili made another 3, and Patty Mills added one to close the first-quarter scoring and give the Spurs a 26-20 advantage. The Spurs committed nine turnovers while managing only 20 points in the third quarter, and Miami led 78-74 heading to the fourth. Notes: James joined Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as the only players with 4,000 points and 1,000 assists in the post-season. ... Ray Allen moved past Bryant and Derek Fisher into second place on the career list with 49 3-pointers in the NBA Finals. Robert Horry, a former Spurs forward, is the leader with 56. Air Max 90 Baratas España . A Swiss Federal Tribunal ruling published Friday said that FIFAs disputes panel and the Court of Arbitration for Sport correctly imposed the sanction for Nantes enticing Guinea forward Ismael Bangoura to break his contract with Dubai club Al Nasr in January 2012. Air Max 90 Descuento . - John Elways philosophy is to address immediate needs in free agency, even though some of his own veterans may prove too pricey to keep around. PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Rory McIlroy is 18 holes away from his first PGA Tour victory in 18 months, a chance to show the world he is back on his game. Thats not the way McIlroy views the final round at the Honda Classic. McIlroy started strong, avoided a big number with a brilliant bogey in the middle and took on the wind and water on the 16th hole for one final birdie Saturday that gave him a 1-under 69 in the toughest conditions and a two-shot lead over Russell Henley at PGA National. The 24-year-old from Northern Ireland has come to expect this kind of performance. He finished one shot behind in Abu Dhabi. He played in the final group in Dubai, where nothing went well in the final round. And here is again, making key shots and big putt to keep his nose in front in the Honda Classic. "Ive been building and building toward getting my game to a level where I feel it should be," he said. "And Im pretty much at that point now." Saturday wasnt easy. McIlroy might have saved his day with a bogey on the par-3 seventh. He took a penalty drop from under a palmetto bush, and faced a shot off the pine straw across 20 yards of rough to an elevated green with the pin toward the back right. The shot came off perfectly, and he holed the 8-foot putt for bogey. "It was one of the best up-and-downs Ive ever had, I guess," McIlroy said. "And it was almost like a momentum builder. I just bogeyed the last, but walking off that seventh green with a bogey almost felt like I had saved par or I had almost gained a shot on the field. It kept any momentum that I had going to the next few holes." He closed out his round with a 5-iron into the wind to 10 feet of the flag on the 16th for a birdie, and then narrowly missed two birdie chances on the closing holes. McIlroy was at 12-under 198. Asked about the importance of winning on a major tour for the first time since the World Tour Championship in Dubai at the end of 2012, and the first time since the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick in 2012 on the PGA Tour, Boy Wonder grappled for the right answer. "It would be nice. It would be my seventh PGA Tour win," he said. "Thats what it is. No bigger, no smaller. And Ill go home and have a nice night and get up the next morning and go play the Seminole Pro-Member. So its all good." He also knows its not over. Henley wasnt doing anything special until he holed out from 150 yards for eagle on No. 14, and then rammed in a 50-foot birdie putt from just off the green at the 17th for birdie that gave him a 68 and put him in the last grroup for the first time since he won the Sony Open last year.dddddddddddd Thats the only time Henley has won -- in his debut as a PGA Tour member -- and he hasnt been in this situation since then. Henley has only two top 10s since that win down from Waikiki Beach at the start of 2012. Now he has to chase one of golfs biggest stars, on a course where only one players -- Ernie Els in 2008 -- has come from behind on the final day to win. "Im trying not to pay attention to what Rory is doing," Henley said. "Obviously, hes playing great and hes been in this situation a little bit more than me. But I still have a lot of confidence and Im just going to try to play my game and not worry about what hes doing too much." Russell Knox of Scotland had a 68 and was three shots behind, while Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela had a 66 and was another shot back. David Hearn (70) of Brantford, Ont., was tied for 35th at 3 under. Tiger Woods is still in the game, but just barely. Woods matched the low round of the day. He was among five players who shot 65, all before the leaders teed off and the wind kicked into gear, but it was enough to move the No. 1 player 49 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 17th. Even so, he was seven shots behind. Woods has never won a PGA Tour event when trailing by more than five shots entering the last round. "Today was a positive day," Woods said after his lowest score in 10 rounds this year. "Hit the ball well and made some putts and got myself back in the hunt." It doesnt figure to be easy for Woods or anyone to track down McIlroy, who has converted the 54-hole lead in his last four PGA Tour wins dating to the 2011 Masters, where he blew a four-shot lead. That streak includes the Honda Classic two years, which he won to rise to No. 1 in the world for the first time. "Definitely not a coincidence," McIlroy said. "I learned a lot that day. I learned not to protect a 54-hole lead. I should have just stuck to the game plan, stuck to my process, not look at the leaderboard, not look at what other people are doing. ... And thats the reason that every 54-hole lead that Ive had since, Ive been able to close the deal. Hopefully, I can keep that run going tomorrow." It would be a remarkable turnaround for McIlroy, who a year ago was so frustrated with his game and high expectations that he walked off the course after 26 holes, a mistake he vowed to never repeat. "Theres still 18 holes to go," he said. "But Im feeling comfortable with where I am." ' ' '

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Rex Ryans sense of humour is still going strong.Despite a 3-11 record and facing an uncertain future, the New York Jets coach has kept the one-liners and self-deprecating jokes coming. He refuses to pout, even if Sundays game against the New England Patriots might be his last at home with the team.Im just going to be myself, he said Friday. Im not dead yet. Im always going to be me and thats just my personality. Thats just who I am every day. Regardless of the good times, the bad times, or whatever, I think Im consistent that way.Ryan has been in relatively good spirits this week, cracking jokes about himself, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Thats all while possibly facing his final days with a franchise hes led for the last six seasons. No, I havent thought about that at all, Ryan said. I thought you were going to ask me what I thought of Belichick.Ryan famously declared soon after he was hired by the Jets in 2009 that he didnt come to New York to kiss the Patriots coachs rings. Under Ryan, the Jets are 4-8 against Belichick, including a playoff victory during the 2010 season, but the Patriots have won the AFC East title every year during that span. So, for Ryan, mission not accomplished. But just because he has tried — and mostly failed — to beat Belichick, that doesnt mean he dislikes the Patriots coach.I probably think hes a lot better coach than he thinks I am, I think thats safe to say, a smiling Ryan said. Wed like everybody to think that we dont like each other, but thats not the facts. Hes not somebody that you can hang out with or something like that, at least I dont. Were cordial. Anytime we see each other off the field or we talk to each other, its just the opposite of what people think.Ryan is nowhere near the brash, no-holds-barred guy whose daily press conferences were filled with bold statements and wild guarantees. He toned that down a bit in the last few years when he learned that it was negatively affecting his players. But Ryan has managed to be loose during tense times, particularly this season. His players noticed that effort, and its endeared him over the years.Man, hes the ultimate players coach, said wide receiver Percy Harvin, who joined the Jets in a trade in October. Hes always going to go to bat for you and he always has your back. He keeps it real. If you ask him a question, hes going to give you the answer. If he dont have it, hes going to find a resource to get it for you.Harvin said he definitely thinks Jets players could appeal to owner Woody Johnson and the front office to keep Ryan beyond this season. But I dont even think thats necessary, said Harvin, adding he could have called it a season two weeks ago instead of aggressively working back from a severely sprained ankle. Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson is also trying to get back on the field after missing three games with turf toe.Guys will run through the wall for Rex, Harvin said. When youve got a players coach, and do things the way he does it, your team is going to be all in.And, if this is Ryans last home game with the Jets, beating the Patriots would be a satisfying ending for the players and coach.Definitely, linebacker Calvin Pace said. Best way to go out — if thats the case.NOTES: Ryan said claims by former CB Josh Thomas, now with Detroit, that he didnt receive enough coaching while with the Jets were humorous. Thomas was waived Tuesday after limited action. I never heard it ever in my life, Ryan said. Ive been coaching a long time, and not just about me or anybody else. Thats a new one. ... The Rays have played their best baseball of the season these past few weeks, winning nine of their last 11 games, including wins over Detroit on Friday (6-3) and Saturday (7-2) after an 8-1 setback in Thursdays series opener. Chris Archer evened his record for the season (5-5) on Saturday. The right- hander allowed only two runs over 8 1/3 innings of work before giving way to Grant Balfour, who recorded the last two outs of the game by strikeout. Logan Forsythe went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to help power the offense. Kevin Kiermaier also helped the cause, going 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI out of the nine hole. Anibal Sanchez was unable to match Archer, putting together one of his worst starts of the season to fall to 5-3 on the campaign. Sanchez allowed a season- high seven runs over 5 2/3 innings, while letting up six hits and four walks. Solo home runs from Alex Avila and J.D. Martinez accounted for the entire offensive output for the Tigers. Martinez is batting .467 with a home run and four RBI since the calendar turned over to July. Getting the call for the Rays on Sunday will be David Price, who will be trying to win his third straight decision. The ace left-hander has been in the middle of trade rumors of late and has certainly made himself look particularly attractive over his last few starts.dddddddddddd. On Tuesday against the Yankees Price allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings to improve to 7-7 on the season. The effort did end a streak of five straight games in which Price struck out 10 or more batters, but he still has 153 punchouts in 131 innings this season to go along with a 3.50 ERA. Price has great career numbers against Detroit. He is 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA in seven total appearances, five of which were starts, spanning 36 1/3 innings of work. Rick Porcello will be attempting to match the Yankees Masahiro Tanaka for the most wins in baseball on Sunday. Porcello is currently 11-4 with a 3.12 ERA this season, putting him on pace to smash his career-bests in both wins and ERA. He is also on pace to set career- bests in WHIP (1.124), hits per nine innings (8.1), despite striking out only 5.2 batters per nine innings. His sparkling ERA has been dropping quickly, as Porcello carries a streak of 25 1/3 scoreless innings into this contest. He threw complete game shutouts in each of his last two starts against Texas and Oakland and has won three straight decisions. In the win over Oakland, Porcello did not record a single strikeout and only threw 95 pitches. In his career Porcello is 2-2 with a 2.73 ERA in five starts against Tampa Bay. The Tigers and Rays split six meetings a season ago. ' ' '

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch deservedly draw the attention for what theyve done in getting the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl. Players like Jermaine Kearse, Walter Thurmond and Malcolm Smith are just as big a reason why Seattle is facing Denver in Sundays championship game. Seattle may have one of the better starting lineups in the NFL, but the depth that general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll have amassed is equally impressive. Its the reason they can rotate eight different defensive linemen. Its why when Brandon Browner was injured and Thurmond suspended, Byron Maxwell could step in and the play in Seattles secondary not suffer. Its a regular refrain in the Seattle locker room to hear teammates say the Seahawks reserves could be starters on other teams. And there is some proof: in the past year 23 players once with Seattle have spent time on the 53-man roster of other teams. "Its crazy because were always saying our backups could be starters. We always say that," strong safety Kam Chancellor said. "Those guys, people dont see this, but in practice those guys play just as good as us. Theyre making plays, getting the ball. Those guys contribute on special teams. Our special teams are probably one of the best. "Those guys put in work on special teams and it just goes unseen." When Carroll and Schneider took over, there was a revolving door of roster moves --839 in total since before the start of the 2010 season -- that followed in an effort to make a roster that was competitive beyond just the starters on each side of the ball. They wanted a depth chart that was the envy of the NFL. They wanted their reserves coveted by other teams. They wanted guys they were going to be released grabbed off the waiver wire the second they were made available. Seattle got its wish. Of the players released in the past year, five ended up in Jacksonville and four landed in Kansas City. "John and I have joined together aggressively to compete at every single turn, at every opportunity whatever it may be, to see if theres something in there for us," Carroll said. "Hes done a great job of having the competitive will to keep pushing and fighting and clawing and scratching to have the opportunity that has sent us down the road early on with the hundreds of guys that came through the program." Kearse, Thurmond and Smith are just three examples of players not counted on as full-time starters that have proven invaluable. Seattles seen contributions from Michael Bowie, Clinton McDonald, Jeremy Lane and Heath Farwell just to name a few more. Kearse was an undrafted free agent that signed with Seattle in 2012 and became a needed option as a third and fourth receiver this season with Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice suffering through injuries. Kearse finished with 22 receptions and four touchdowns in the regular season, but his biggest catch came in the NFC championship game when his 35-yard TD grab in the fourth quarter gave Seattle a 20-17 lead. Thurmond missed four games late in the season when he was suspended for violating the leagues substance-abuse policy. But hes started three games at cornerback this season and is Seattles best option as the fifth defensive back covering slot receivers -- a big emphasis this week with the amount of times the Broncos throw. Smith has shown the same kind of versatility at linebacker. Hes played both outside spot this season, first when Bruce Irvin was suspended and later when injuries to K.J. Wright and Bobby Wagner forced shuffling. "Through all the stuff we have gone through there has always been a guy who stepped up and made plays," Wagner said. "Last year it was Walter, this year it was Walter and Maxwell and guys like Malcolm, everybody. We have a bunch of players that if someone went down can step in and do a great job." One of the ways Seattle was able to create such a dynamic roster came from the three-way quarterback competition that Carroll had last season and which Wilson eventually won. It sent the message to the entire roster and to any free agents -- big-name or small-time -- that Seattle was a place they could come and have a chance. "You could tell looking at our board of players that we had fast, confident, intelligent individuals," Schneider said last week. "Guys who knew they were going to come in and compete for positions because the previous year we had a three person quarterback competition. "You know you have a shot when you have a three person quarterback competition as a player." Air Max 95 Rebajas . Zapatillas Air Max 95 Baratas .com) - Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau has been selected as the NHLs Rookie of the Month for December, the league announced Friday.Sun City, South Africa (SportsNetwork.com) - Luke Donald saw a 4-shot lead quickly evaporate on Saturday, but a birdie at the last helped him regain the lead after three rounds at the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Donald fired a 3-under 69 at Gary Player Country Club Saturday and he leads by one shot over a surging Danny Willett. Donald, a seven-time European Tour winner who last won at the 2012 BMW PGA Championship, finished 54 holes at 13- under-par 203. Im pretty pleased with the score, Donald said. I could have played a little bit more solid on the back nine, but to be honest, around this course, I think with a lead, shooting a 69, thats kind of what the game plan was, to go out and shoot a low round and keep myself ahead and in position for tomorrow. Willett, playing in the penultimate group Saturday, shot up the leaderboard with a 7-under 65 and he is nipping at Donalds heels at 12-under 204. First-round leader Ross Fisher struggled at times in his third round, but a strong finish helped him end three behind the leader at 10-under 206 through 54 holes. Fisher shot a 2-under 70 in round three. The next-closest player to the trio of Englishmen is Marcel Siem, who is alone in fourth at 5-under 211 following a 71 Saturday. Donald, leading by two over Fisher and five over Willett at the start of his round, extended his advantage to three shots with a birdie on four. Fisher, who traded a birdie on the second with a bogey at the third, got back to within two after another gain on the par-4 fifth. Another birdie for Donald on the par-3 seventh put him at minus-12 and back up by three shots. Both Donald and Fisher poured in birdies on the ninth, keeping Donalds advantage at three. In the meantime, Willett was making his move on the front nine. The 27-year- old used gains on two, five and six to get within striking distancce before going on a run.dddddddddddd Willetts next two birdies on nine and 10 got him even with Fisher at minus-10 and three shots behind Donald. Donald used his second consecutive gain on No. 10 to push his lead to four and it appeared as if he was beginning to pull away. However, Willett drained his third straight birdie on No. 11 to get within three. Both Donald and Willett made bogeys on 13 before Willett drained his seventh gain of the day on 14 to get to within two. Another Willett birdie on 16 paired with a Donald bogey on 17 all of a sudden had the duo tied atop the leaderboard at minus-12. After Willett finished up with pars on 17 and 18, Donalds approach out of the left rough on the last dropped to within five feet of the hole. He kicked that in for a birdie to retake the lead heading into the final round. Im excited to be in that position again, said Donald. Thats why we work hard and thats why we practice so much, and Im excited for the challenge tomorrow. Fisher was quiet on his back nine, but never fell too far behind. He made six straight pars from No. 10 before falling back to minus-9 with a bogey on 16. The 34-year-old salvaged his round with a nice birdie putt at the last to get to three behind Donald. Tomorrow is going to be a big day, Fisher said. I just need to go out and play how Ive been playing the first three days and how I putted on the first day. If I do that, I feel like Ive got a really good chance of winning it. NOTES: Donald is also a five-time winner on the PGA Tour ... Willett, whose lone European Tour win came at the 2012 BMW International Open, had seven top-10 finishes last season without a victory ... Fisher has won five times on the European Tour ... Defending champion Thomas Bjorn shot his best round of the week with a 4-under 68 and he is tied for 24th at 4-over 220. ' ' '

As the only competitor to try two quads, much less complete them, Kovtun ended the day nearly nine points ahead of Japans Tatsuki Machida, who opened with a clean quad but then stepped out of the triple toe loop that was the second jump in his combination. Javier Fernandez of Spain was in third despite falling on his quad. In the womens short program, Russian Julia Lipnitskaia was in the lead, followed by Carolina Kostner of Italy, the 2012 world champion. American teammates Agnes Zawadzki and Mirai Nagasu were one-hundredth of a point apart at third and fourth, though well behind the two leaders. Kovtun is gunning for the sole Russian mens slot in Sochi, which Turin Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko also wants. Plushenko was to have been part of the Rostelecom field, but withdrew from what would have been his first top-tier competition since back surgery this spring. Plushenko blamed his withdrawal on a knee injury. "I was interested in trying my strength against such a fantastic skater," Kovtun said. "But I hope I will have another chance at Russian nationals." Kovtun was strong throughout his flamenco-themed program, the only notable flaw that he was almost sitting on the landing of his second quad to keep his balance. Machida, who won gold at Skate America, lamented that he was not in good condition in Moscow, but said its not clear whats troubling him. "Actually, I dont know," he said when asked about the specifics. Fernandez, the European champion and world bronze medallist , expressed satisfaction despite his fall. "I think I just had a little problem in the pattern and I just need to keep my mind clear," he said. All four of the top women did triple-triple combinations. But Lipnitskaia landed a more difficult triple lutz-triple toe combo while Kostner, Zawadzki and Nagasu all did triple toe-triple toes. In pairs, four-time worrld champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy led after the short program, followed by Russians Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov and Canadas Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch.dddddddddddd Lipnitskaia, who won gold at Skate Canada, will qualify for the Grand Prix final with a medal of any shade in Moscow. Kostner would qualify with a gold, but Zawadzki, after a seventh-place finish in the Cup of China, is out of contention. The top six skaters in each discipline qualify for the final, which is Dec. 5-8 in Fukuoka, Japan. Lipnitskaias program began on a mysterious note, with her crouched down and drawing figures with her finger on the ice. Asked what thats all about, she chose to keep the meaning hidden. "Everyone can see what he wants to," she said. But once she rose from the crouch, the 2012 junior world champions program was crystal-clear: a clean triple-triple, a precisely landed double axel and a very fast combination spin at the end. The veteran Kostner, who said she is contemplating retirement after the season, said she was soothed by being back on the ice at Moscows Luzhniki Small Arena. The arena was the practice rink for the 2005 world championships, where she won her first world medal, a bronze. "It feels very special," Kostner said. "Its funny to see so much time has passed." The top pairs all struggled, notably Savchenkos hard fall on a throw triple axel, a challenging move that the pair daringly puts almost at the end of their program when their energy has flagged somewhat. "Its a risky element," Szolkowy acknowledged. "We tried it in several positions; we found at the end it is best." Bazarova put her hand down on the pairs opening triple toe loop and landed awkwardly on the throw triple loop, but said it was all an improvement over last weeks Trophee Bompard, where the pair was fourth. "Today, we got the maximum levels," she said. Moscovitch took his fall in stride, saying, "I was working on some yoga positions on the landing." ' ' '

The 90-plus minutes of play are about trends and approach.DAVIE, Fla. -- Knowshon Moreno was activated Wednesday. But active? Not so much. The Miami Dolphins running back came off the physically unable to perform list and joined practice, a big step in his recovery from a knee injury that forced him to miss the first 12 days of training camp. But he spent most of the workout watching, sat out 11-on-11 drills and is certain to miss the first exhibition game Friday at Atlanta. "Today was testing the knee out and seeing how it feels," Moreno said. "I feel good. What I did today I felt pretty good doing. Now the next couple of days Ill just progress and do more and more each day. The main thing is to be ready for the season." Moreno signed a $3.275 million, one-year contract in March after five seasons with the Denver Broncos. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in June and said his rehabilitation went as expected. "Every day I did more and more in the training room," he said. "Now its time to do a little bit more on the field." Moreno lingered with an assistant coach after practice and was one of the last players off the field. "Its good to see the guys we expect to be playmakers this year come off the sideline and start getting some work," guard Daryn Colledge said. Lamar Miller led the Dolphins in rushing last season and has looked good in training camp, meaning Moreno will have to play catch-up in competition for the starting job. Because hes an excellent blocker and receiver, Moreno might be best-suited for the role of third-down back. But he also could help upgrade a ground game that ranked 26th in the NFL last year. "I cant really think about the depth chart," Moreno said. "Im going to do every play, every practice, every game 100 per cent. Whatever happenns after that will happen.dddddddddddd" Moreno and Miller will be running behind an offensive line with five new starters in the season opener. Even so, third-year coach Joe Philbin said hes optimistic about the running game. "The only thing I can tell you right now is that it has looked better in training camp so far than I remember it looking in prior training camps," Philbin said. "Thats the one thing that my eyes have seen so far. Obviously we havent seen it in a game yet, but I liked what Ive seen. I like the space weve created. I liked the way our lines have worked together so far. Thats really what gives me confidence right now." Moreno enjoyed a breakout season last year with the Broncos, ranking fifth in the NFL in yards from scrimmage. He rushed for 1,038 yards, caught 60 passes and scored 13 touchdowns -- all career highs -- to help Denver reach the Super Bowl. But that was with Peyton Manning. Now Moreno will line up with inconsistent third-year starter Ryan Tannehill in an offence that scored once in its final 24 possessions last year. Moreno and the rest of the Dolphins are learning a new scheme under first-year offensive co-ordinator Bill Lazor. "Im good with the playbook," Moreno said. "Its a totally different scheme from Denver, but I feel comfortable about it. Now its just going out there seeing it full speed versus the defence." Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe was among those happy to see Moreno in pads. Ellerbe recruited Moreno to Georgia, where they were teammates in 2006-08. "Im ready for him to get healthy and get out there on the field and help this team," Ellerbe said. "Hes a kind of guy with a lot of energy. Hes a fighter, a good player. Hes athletic. Ive been a fan since college." ' ' '

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Geno Smith bounced back in a big way after an early interception had memories of some recent mistakes creeping into his mind. The rookie quarterback threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score as the New York Jets suddenly resurgent offence set a season high for points and stopped a three-game skid with a 37-27 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. "Man, we needed that in the worst way," coach Rex Ryan said, "to say the least." Chris Ivory had a touchdown run, Nick Folk kicked three field goals and Antonio Allen blocked a punt and returned it for a score to help the Jets (6-7) avoid their first four-game losing streak under Ryan. Smith ended a miserable stretch that included getting benched last week by throwing his first touchdown toss since Week 7. He finished 16 of 25 for 219 yards, and ran five times for 50 yards -- and was able to overcome his 20th interception of the season, which led to a field goal for the Raiders. "I cant sit here and say Im not human because it is difficult," Smith said. "When you have those struggles and you come out and, the first quarter and first half, you have an interception near the 50-yard line and you kind of start to think about those things, all of those mistakes in the past." Smith got a boost on the sideline from his teammates, who urged him to hang in there and not lose his confidence. "Thats the mark of this young man," Ryan said. "Hes a resilient guy and has shown he can bounce back. It was an excellent performance on his part, and really, the team in general." Matt McGloin threw two touchdown passes and fullback Marcel Reece, starting because Oakland was down three injured running backs, had a 63-yard touchdown run for the Raiders (4-9). Oakland has lost three straight overall, and 13 in a row in games played in the Eastern time zone. "Today is as bad as we played this whole season," Raiders safety Charles Woodson said. "It was really embarrassing to be part of it. We looked like the Bad News Bears out there." With the Jets leading 3-0 after Folks 41-yard field goal, Smith was picked off by Kevin Burnett. The sparse crowd at MetLife Stadium booed loudly, but Sebastian Janikowski missed a 52-yard field goal. Despite Smiths turnover, offensive co-ordinator Marty Mornhinweg went right back to the pass on the next drive. Smith lofted a throw that a leaping Jeremy Kerley came down with for a 25-yard touchdown and a 10-0 lead. "I just went up and got it," said Kerley, playing for the first time since dislocating his left elbow on Nov. 3. "It felt like backyard football." It was Smiths first TD pass since Oct. 20 against New England and his second in eight games. It was also New Yorks first touchdown of any kind in nine quarters. Terrelle Pryor came in at quarterback on Oaklands third offensive series to help offset the Raiders lack of running backs with Darren McFadden, Rashad Jennings and Jeremy Stewart all inactive with injuries. He led a drive capped by a 41-yard field goal by Janikowski. Then McGloin returned and, on third-and-9 from the 3, Ed Reed got his 62nd career interception and first with the Jets. Folk later made a 23-yard field goal. Allen blocked Marquette Kings punt, recovered it and returned it for a touchdown to put New York ahead 20-3 in the second quarter. Oakland got on the scoreboard right away in the second half as Reece zipped up the middle for a 63-yard touchdown. He finished with 123 yards on 19 carries. But the Jets came right back as Smith ran for an 8-yard score, his fourth of the season. McGloin connected with Rod Streater on a 48-yard touchdown pass on a ball threaded between Reed and Antonio Cromartie, who smacked into each other. The Jets said Cromartie has a head injury, but he finished the game. Ivory blasted into the end zone from 15 yards, slipping out of three tackle attempts and dragging a fourth Raiders defender over the goal line for a 37-20 lead. The play was set up by Smiths 32-yard scramble. McGloin, 18 of 31 for 245 yards, connected with Mychal Rivera on a 1-yard touchdown with 2:24 remaining. "Were out of lifelines," Jets guard Willie Colon said. "We have to execute and have to get it done, and today was the first step." NOTES: With 2,475 yards passing, Smith passed Mark Sanchez (2,444 in 2009) for the most by a rookie in franchise history. ... After the loss, White refused to make good on the bet, instead offering Hoyt tickets to a Bears game. Cue the social backlash. So heres the question: did White and Hoyt have a binding contract that requires White to pay up? In order to have a binding contract, you need to have a three things: an offer, an acceptance and something called consideration.  Its not crazy to say that the first 2 elements are met here. White made an offer, and Hoyt accepted the offer when he can excitedly tweeted "Ill take that offer!". So far so good for Hoyt. On to the third element of consideration. Consideration is an essential element for the formation of a contract. In order to have it, each side has to promise or provide something of value to the other. You give me something and I give you something. Without this exchange, there is no contract.  For example, if you express an interest in my banjo and I agree to sell it to you for $50,000, we have the consideration we need to say we have a contract. Im getting $50K and youre getting an awesome instrument that brings people together. This is where things fall apart for Hoyt. This deal didnt have the requisite consideration. The valuee only flowed in one direction – to Hoyt.dddddddddddd. There was no value going the other way to White. The deal was one-sided. That means we dont have a binding contract. You might be able to argue consideration if White had tweeted out that if you follow him and Duke loses, he will give away season tickets. In this case, it could be said that White is getting value because when people follow him, his brand becomes more valuable which in turn can translate into sponsor dollars and marketing opportunities.  Theres also another problem for Hoyt. Before you can say there is a legally binding contract, you have to show that both sides intended on entering into the contract in the first place. That would be tough to show here. Ultimately, White would say he was just joking. He doesnt know Hoyt and the tickets he offered arent even available. This all went down in the informal environment that is Twitter. A contract was never contemplated. So all this means that there is no binding contract between White and Hoyt, and as a result, Hoyt cant force White to cough up the season tickets. That being said, the next question to answer is whether White should provide Hoyt with season tickets. And thats something I suspect everyone has an opinion on including my banjo teacher. ' ' '

FLIMS, Switzerland -- Canadas Kelsey Rocque defeated South Koreas Kyeong-Ae Kim 6-4 to win the womens title at the world junior curling championships on Wednesday. Rocque and her Edmonton rink stole two points in the eighth end and hit out for the win after South Korea scored a single in the ninth. "Honestly, this is unexplainable," Rocque said. "We came into this tournament really wanting it, and its awesome to see all our hard work pay off." In mens play, Canadas Braden Calvert settled for a fourth-place finish after dropping a 7-5 decision to Norways Eirik Mjoeen in the bronze-medal game. Rocque and third Keely Brown, second Taylor McDonald, lead Claire Tully and alternate Alison Kotylak are the first Canadian team to win the world junior womens title since Saskatchewans Marliese Miller (now Kasner) won the championship in 2003. "Its almost less pressure knowing Canada hasnt won the gold (in 11 years)," Rocque said. "Its awesome to get it again." The Canadian rink had won six games in a row entering the final. Rocque had last-rock advantage because of her win over Kim in the Page 1-2 playoff game. Kim led 3-2 after six ends but Canada regained the lead with a double in the seventh. Rocque added another deuce in the eighth end when Kims takeout attempt rolled too far. "They are a very strong team," Rocque said of the silver medallists, the first South Korean team to qualify for this event. "She made a clutch shot in the ninth end and we knew it would be right down to the bitter end with them. It was a well-played game." "Im so proud of the girls, they just played great all week and we just had an awesome week," she added. "I couldnt ask for anything more." Russias Alina Kovaleva defeated Swedens Isabella Wranaa 11-4 to claim the bronze medal. Switzerlands Yannick Schwaller won the mens gold with a 6-5 victory over 2013 champion Kyle Smith of Scotland. In the bronze-medal game, Calvert stole two in the ninth to pull even heading into the 10th end. Norway had the hammer and scored two when Calvert came up short on his final freeze attempt. "Were disappointed with our play today and know we can play better," said Calvert. "Were hungry for more. We just got out of the starting gate a little slow today and picked it up late, but not soon enough." CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Tony Stewart does not consider the Daytona 500 a disaster, despite the engine problems that spoiled his return to racing from a broken right leg. The three-time NASCAR champion wound up 35th in the season-opening race, but he logged enough laps during Speedweeks that he feels good going into the upcoming stretch of seven consecutive races. Stewart missed the final 15 races last year after breaking his leg in two places during a sprint car crash in Iowa. His first time back in a race car was Feb. 14, the day before he competed -- and was crashed out of -- the exhibition Sprint Unlimited. He also raced in the Budweiser Duel before the 500, giving him 672 miles of racing in three events. Stewart goes to Sundays race at Phoenix International Raceway "a lot more confident than I was before we got to Daytona." "I think having all the races that we ran, and actually getting in a crash, while not a great thing, allowed me to sort of test my leg and it felt good," Stewart said in a Stewart-Haas Racing team release. "There have been some little things that have felt a little different, but for the most part, its felt like an old pair of tennis shoes that youre just comfortable with. I think the whole time in Daytona exceeded my expectations of what I hoped it would be like." But the 500 itself was a letdown for SHR. Stewart had the engine issue and Danica Patrick was involved in a crash and finished 40th. It left only Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch, the two newcomers to the organization, in contention for a solid finish and both had difficulties at the end. Busch wound up 21st and Harvick was involved in the final accident of the race and finished a team-best 13th. Stewart said Sundays race at Phoenix will be a better indicator of where the team is than Daytona, one of only four restrictor-plate races on the schedule. "Daytona and Talladega have always just been two different forms of racing," Stewart said, referring to the necessary teamwork and drafting. "What happens at Phoenix and the races after that has to be done on your own. You cant help each other at Phoenix. You just have to go race." He likes his chances at Phoenix, where he has one win, eight top-fives and 12 top-10s in 23 career starts. Hes completed all but 14 of 7,257 laps on the 1-mile oval. But PIR is also the place that pushed Stewart into becoming a full-time race car driver in 1993. Still working eight-hour days at $5-an-hour at a machine shop in Columbus, Ind., Stewart headed West to run USAC Silver Crown season-opening Copper World Classic. He qualified second to Davey Hamilton, then led 31 of 50 laps before finishing second to Mike Bliss. Stewart earned $3,500 that day -- a payout that convinced him running the Silver Crown, Sprint and Midget races across the nation that year sounded a lot better than returning to the machine shop. He never looked back, learning how to adapt in every kind of car he drove out of "fear that Im going to have to get a real job if Im not successful. "To think that it all kind of started at Phoenix, I guess you could say its the place where my career came full-circle," he said. Wholesale Jerseys China . NEW YORK -- David Price cant control the trade speculation. The opposing hitters, he can handle them just fine. Price came within one pitch of extending his remarkable strikeout streak, yet still did plenty to lead the resurgent Tampa Bay Rays over the New York Yankees 2-1 on a warm Tuesday night for their fourth straight victory. "Stay here, David," Rays manager Joe Maddon implored. James Loney hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning and the Rays matched their longest win string of the season. Derek Jeter tied Lou Gehrigs team record for doubles as the Yankees equaled their worst skid this year with their fourth loss in a row. Price (7-7) struck out nine -- he fanned at least 10 in each of his previous five starts, and was trying to join Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson and Nolan Ryan as the only pitchers to accomplish the feat six straight times. "That wouldve been cool," Price said. The left-hander gave up four hits and was pulled after seven innings and 119 pitches. He fanned Francisco Cervelli for the second out in the bottom of the seventh, then got two strikes on both Yangervis Solarte and Brett Gardner, missed with a couple of close pitches and couldnt quite get strikeout No. 10. In 23 career starts against the Yankees, Price has never reached double digits in strikeouts. The Rays, who spent most of June with the worst record in the majors, have won six of seven. Their recent struggles had fueled talk that Tampa Bay might trade Price before the July 31 deadline. Price has said that the more the Rays win, the better chance he has of staying with his original club. "I just play ball," the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner said. "Thats my job." Jake McGee pitched a perfect eighth and Grant Balfour worked around a pair of walks in the ninth for his 11th save in 13 chances. Maddon has gone to a closer-by-committee approach. He said he picked Balfour this time because of a bit of "karma" -- the manager saw the reliever walking his grandmother into the team hotel lobby earlier in the day. "True," Maddon said. Balfour said his grandmom, in her mid-80s, came from the familys home in Australia to see one game at Yankee Stadium. "Im sure she was happy I was able to get in tonight," Balfour said. New York (41-41) has dropped eight of 10. "The guys we have, theyve got to get it done. Thats the bottom line," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "As I said, its not just a couple of guys going, its a number of guys." "No one is going to feel sorry for you," he said. "No one has a magic potion. You just have to grind it out." It was 1-all when Loney hit the first pitch of the sixth from Hiroki Kuroda (5-6) into the Yankees bullpen in right-centre field. His fifth home run of the season gave him 11 RBIs in 14 games. The Rays took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Matt Joyce and Evan Longoria opened with singles and, after Loney struck out, Logan Forsythe hit an RBI single. A wild throw on a rundown gave the Yankees a run in the bottom half. Jeter led off with his 534th career double and went to third on Jacoby Ellsburys single. Price trapped Ellsbury with a pickoff throw, but he was hit in the back by shortstop Ben Zobrists throw and Jeter scored. Zobrist is playing shortstop in place of regular starter Yunel Escobar, put on the disabled list before the game because of a sore right shoulder. NOTES: Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long was ejected in the sixth for arguing balls and strikes from the bench. ... Cervelli nearly tumbled over the dugout railing while catching Zobrists foul pop in the first. Maddon helped steady the backup catcher, who started in place of Brian McCann. In the ninth, McCann pinch hit and looked at strike three with a runner on first. After hitting just .221 with nine homers and 36 RBIs at the halfway mark, McCann said hes been "horrible" this season. An All-Star with Atlanta, he signed an $85 million, five-year deal with the Yankees. Girardi said it was just a regular day off for rest. "I believe hes going to hit," Girardi said. The Coyotes try to snap their nine-game skid at home on Tuesday night against the Edmonton Oilers, who take to the ice one day after the firing of their head coach. Arizona has not picked up a victory at home since Nov. 4, going 0-6-3 since. The Coyotes have been outscored 17-6 in losing the first four of a five-game homestand that ends tonight. They hit the road for three in a row starting on Saturday in Los Angeles. Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Lauri Korpikoski and Antoine Vermette all scored in Saturdays 4-3 shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild, while Devan Dubnyk made 32 saves through overtime before getting beat twice in the tiebreaker. Arizona has lost five in a row overall. We said the other night we are going to have to play harder, were going to have to be harder to play against, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. Tippett scratched both forward Sam Gagner and defenseman Connor Murphy in an attempt to shake up his slumping club. It is unknown if either will slide back into the lineup tonight, but Korpikoski is questionable with a lower-body injury suffered on Saturday that kept him out of practice on Monday. The good news for Arizona is that it has won eight of its past nine over Edmonton and nine of the last 12 played at home. Eakins was fired 31 games into his second season with the Oilers, who went 29-44-9 last season under their former coach. General manager Craig MacTavish will take over the Oilers on an interim basis before transitioning the team over to Todd Nelson, who was in his fifth season coaching the Oilers American Hockey League affiliate in Oklahoma City. Hell join the team as an assistant coach before MacTavish hands him the reins on an interim basis. Theres blood all over my hands in this as well because I put the lineup together and the roster, noted MacTavish on Monday. Im not here to absolve myself of accountability for the situation that were in, nor am I here to solely blame Dallas for the job that he did because in my mind he did a lot of really good things for our group. Eakins last game on Edmontons bench was a lifeless 2-0 loss to the New York Rangers on Sunday in which the Oilers had only 16 shots. Ben Scrivens made 20 saves but Edmontons offense remained stuck in a slump. The Oilers have now scored two goals or fewer in seven consecutive games and were shut out for the fourth time this season. Edmonton has lost seven straight on the road. ' ' '
