The red-hot Los Angeles Kings will aim for a seventh straight victory and a 3-0 lead in their second round Western Conference series when they host the Anaheim Ducks in Thursdays Game 3 battle at Staples Center. Watch the Ducks vs. Kings live on TSN tonight at 9:30pm et/6:30pm pt. The Kings, of course, were down 3-0 in the opening round against San Jose before becoming only the fourth team in NHL history to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first three meetings. L.A. hasnt slowed down a bit since completing that first-round comeback with a Game 7 win in San Jose, claiming the first two games of this series on the road. The Kings posted a 3-2 overtime win in Anaheim on Saturday before grabbing a 2-0 series lead with Mondays 3-1 triumph at the Honda Center. The Kings have gone on a few long playoff winning streaks in recent years. The club won eight straight at one point in 2012 en route to winning the franchises first Stanley Cup title and had a six-game winning streak last spring before falling in the conference finals to Chicago. "We just take it one game at a time, shift at a time, period at a time. All those things like that," said head coach Darryl Sutter of his teams current winning streak. Anaheim, meanwhile, hopes it can halt L.A.s hot streak on Thursday and avoid falling behind 3-0. A seventh straight win by the Kings would give them a chance to close the series with a sweep Saturday at the Staples Center. The top-seeded Ducks finished 16 points ahead of Los Angeles in the Pacific Division standings and went 4-0-1 against the Kings during the regular-season series, but so far that success hasnt translated to the playoffs. "We know we can beat this team," said Ducks defenseman Ben Lovejoy. "We feel weve had pretty even games, and theyve come out on top. I truly believe the playoffs are all about momentum. Right now, we need to put a seed of doubt in their mind. If we win (Game 3), its a 2-1 series and we have momentum. We can do that." The Kings jumped on Anaheim early in Game 2, with Marian Gaborik scoring just 34 seconds into the contest. Anaheim tied it near the midway point of the first, but Alec Martinez scored the game-winner for L.A. at 12:07 of the first. The score remained 2-1 until Dwight King added an empty-netter in the closing minute of the third period. "Well enjoy this one night, but we have a lot of work to be done still," said Martinez. Jonathan Quick turned away 36 shots to anchor the win for the Kings. The 2012 Conn Smythe winner had stopped 69-of-72 shots sent his way in this series for a save percentage of .958. Gaborik also is having a strong series for L.A., recording three goals and an assist over the first two games to give him nine points (6 goals, 3 assists) in nine games this postseason. The Slovakian sniper was the hero of Game 1, tying it late in regulation before scoring the winner 12:07 into overtime. Anze Kopitar has been on fire for the Kings as well, notching at least one point in all nine of the clubs postseason games this spring. The star centerman had an assist on Monday and leads all skaters in the playoffs with 14 points (4g, 10a). Kopitar has reached the scoresheet in all nine games this postseason. Patrick Maroon scored the only goal of Game 2 for the Ducks, who had won all three of their home games in a 4-2 series win over Dallas in the opening round. Jonas Hiller gave up two goals on 16 shots in the loss. "This series isnt over. We can go to Staples Center, get a few bounces and bring this series back tied," said Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau. The Ducks were 3-0 on the road against the Kings during the regular season, but one of those wins came outdoors at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 25. Thursdays battle will mark the first postseason game between the clubs at the Staples Center, as this series marks the first playoff encounter between L.A. and Anaheim. The Kings played Monday without defensemen Willie Mitchell and Robyn Regehr in the lineup and both players could be out again with undisclosed injuries. Mitchell last played in Game 6 against San Jose, while Regehr has been out since leaving in the first period of Game 1 against Anaheim. Matt Greene has filled in for Mitchell in the lineup, while Jeff Schultz replaced Regehr on Monday. Price was hurt at the start of Wednesdays practice after facing just one shot as the team worked on their power play. He left the ice in discomfort and appeared to be favouring his leg. A Habs source told TSNs John Lu that Price suffered the injury in Sochi and not before the Olympics. Earlier in the day, head coach Michel Therrien told reporters the goaltender was battling the injury before he left for Russia and that his condition worsened during the Games. "During the Olympics, Carey aggravated a lower-body injury," he said. "He will not play the next two games and hes day-to-day." Thhe team later announced that Dustin Tokarski was being called up from Hamilton of the AHL.dddddddddddd Therrien already said Tuesday that Peter Budaj would start against the Red Wings. Price returned home from Sochi this week following an impressive performance at the Winter Olympics, capturing the gold medal with Canadas mens hockey team. He did not participate in the Canadiens Monday practice and took Tuesday off. Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, who also coached Canada in Sochi, said he was unaware of Price reportedly aggravating an injury during the Games. "I didnt know anything about Carey Price being injured. All I know is that he played real well for us," Babcock said Wednesday. Prior to the Olympic break, Price was 26-17-5 through 48 games with the Canadiens and boasted a .925 save-percentage and 2.33 goals-against average. ' ' '

WINNIPEG -- Winnipeg head coach Mike OShea isnt just disappointed that the Blue Bombers lost. OShea disliked the Blue Bombers performance in a 26-3 to the Edmonton Eskimos on Thursday in front of Winnipegs largest home crowd of the season. "The biggest disappointment, besides teammates thinking they let down teammates, is having a crowd like that and putting that kind of effort forward," said OShea, as the Bombers fell to 3-1. The crowd at Investors Group Field topped 30,000 for the first time this season with 30,976 in attendance to watch the Eskimos claim sole possession of first place in the CFL West at 4-0. A scrambling Mike Reilly may have been the difference maker. He rushed for a team leading 96 yards in a game where defences on both sides were making life hard for offences. "It was a long night for both offences, I think," said the Eskimos quarterback, sacked four times to five for Winnipegs Drew Willy. Reilly was held to one offensive touchdown, with another scored by the defence and the rest of Edmontons points coming from Grant Shaw field goals. Winnipeg had only one field goal from Liram Hajrullahu and he hit a post on another try. "Both those defences are really good," said Reilly. "Even in the first half we had some good drives that we didnt finish off. So, certainly, we like to come away with touchdowns rather than field goals but the way our defence is playing right now, its enough to get the win." Slotback Fred Stamps, one of the teams best and most consistent receivers, was injured in the game and coach Chris Jones said later he was still being evaluated. He left the field after the game on a stretcher with an oxygen mask on and was taken to a Winnipeg hospital for precautionary testing. "It was a physical night for both sides and again our quarterback got tested a time too many (but) again hes a physical big quarterback and thats what he does, hes a winner," said Jones. "They were 3-0 for a reason. Theyre a good football team and theyve got great schemes and things of that nature and we had to go out and earn that win." OShea said the way Reilly slipped tackles time and time again showed the Bombers his power, something they knew he had worked on in the off-season. "Yeah hes strong and tough," said OShea. "We underestimated him and give him that credit and when we look at the film well be disappointed we didnt squeeze a little harder and bring him down." That said, the defence kept the Bombers in the game. Winnipegs offence had the ball for just 21:34 to Edmontons 38:26. But in the first and final quarters, when the Eskimos scored 20 of their points, the Bombers had the ball for less than seven of those minutes. "We never got a rhythm going," said Willy. "We left our defence out there. They played really well. Anytime you dont possess the ball very much its tough to put points on the board." He was wearing an ice bag on his left ankle but said he wasnt hurt that badly and it wont affect his ability to play next week in B.C. Edmontons only touchdown in almost 50 minutes of football came from the defence on a first-quarter interception, carried in by former Bomber bad boy Odell Willis. But despite some solid drives (Edmonton had 24 first downs to Winnipegs 11) all the Eskimos offence could muster were field goals until the fourth quarter. With Stamps injured, Reilly finally connected with A.J. Guyton with a 13-yard throw to make it 20-3 with about 10 minutes left, the first and only touchdown by the offence. He said Stamps would have drawn more coverage. The Bomber offence had hardly touched the ball until Nic Grigsby gave them a first down with just over two minutes left in the second quarter. Willy followed with a 50-yard throw to Clarence Denmark but he was sacked on the next play and Denmark couldnt hold it in the end zone on a touchdown try, forcing Winnipeg to settle for a field goal. Notes: The last time an unbeaten Winnipeg and Edmonton tussled for first in the West early in the season was in 1961. Edmonton won that game but Winnipeg went on to win the Grey Cup. ... Zach Anderson had two of Winnipegs four sacks and picked up what initially looked like a fumble deep in Edmonton turf on Thursday, although it was ruled down by contact. Willie Jefferson had two of Edmontons four sacks. Regular punter Mike Renaud hurt himself during the warmup leaving Hajrullahu to handle punts as well. Comprar Zapatillas Adidas Baratas . WADA will look into claims, broadcast by CBS 60 Minutes in the United States on Sunday, that numerous Russian athletes used performance-enhancing drugs at the Winter Games.WADA president Sir Craig Reedie said: WADA will probe these new allegations immediately. Russias track and field athletes are currently the subject of a suspension which places their participation in the Rio Olympics in doubt. The ban was imposed following a WADA-commissioned independent report into allegations of drug use in athletics. Sir Craig Reedie says WADA will probe new claims And WADA is now looking into the latest claims, which Reedie described as a real cause for concern.A WADA statement read: On the basis of recorded conversations between (whistleblower) Vitaly Stepanov and the former Moscow laboratory director, Dr Grigory Rodchenkov, the broadcast claims that numerous Russian athletes were doped at Sochi, including four goold medallists that were using steroids.ddddddddddddThe broadcast also suggests that the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) interfered with the Games anti-doping program; including, some FSB agents having been employed as doping control officers (DCOs). WADA has not yet been able to independently verify these allegations, but will now conduct further inquiries into the allegations without delay. This includes initiating the process to access the recorded conversations in which Dr Rodchenkov aired his views, as cited in the programme.Reedie added: Mr Rodchenkov was of course interviewed by WADAs Independent Commission that exposed widespread doping in Russian athletics last year; yet, regrettably, he was not forthcoming with such information related to the Sochi Games. It is surprising to hear these views so many months after the commission concluded its work. EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oilers havent had enough wins this year to complain about the manner is which they get one.David Perron scored the shootout winner as the Oilers snapped a nine-game losing streak, their second-longest losing skid of the season, with a 3-2 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. The Oilers led 2-0 heading into the third — on goals from Matt Hendricks and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins — before allowing the Kings to claw their way back and send the game to overtime and the eventual shootout. While Nugent-Hopkins said it wasnt great to see another team come back on them, getting a win in extra time after going 0-7 previously this season is a nice feeling. We can still do a much better job pushing back when a team comes at us hard like that, but at the same time, it was a big game for our morale, he said. It was great to finally go to a game that goes to extra time this season and come away with the two points. The Oilers (8-22-7), won for just the second time in their last 22 games. It was also the second win of the season for Edmonton against a Western Conference opponent, upping its record to 2-18-6 in that category.Newcomer Derek Roy, who was picked up in a trade with Nashville on Monday, said he could tell the Oilers were a team in desperate need of something going right.Getting a win is the main thing right now, he said. We just need to build on it. This should give us some confidence to make plays late in games. We cant allow ourselves to be under siege like we were in the third period. The more experience that we get knowing how to win, the better we are going to get.The victory represented the first NHL win for Edmontons interim head coach Todd Nelson. It does feel really good. Im not sure it has sunk in yet, Nelson said. It is more or less a relief. Its a relief for everyone to get this win under our belts and now we can build the result.Drew Doughty and Jake Muzzin responded for the Kings (18-12-8), who lost their second game in as many nights and fifth straight on the road. This one is disappointing, just like the last one (a 2-1 loss in Calgary), Muzzin said. We have to come out hungrier, more desperate, harder. I dont think were coming out with the right attitude that we need to win hockey games right now.We shouldnt be in that situation where we need goals late, we have to get our goals early.Edmonton kicked off the scoring four-and-a-half minutes into the opening period as Roy made an impact in his first game with the Oilers, making a heads-up feed to Hendricks, who blasted a shot from the slot glove-side past Kings starting goalie Jonathan Quick.Roy left the game soon afterwards when his ankle was cut by a skate and he missed the remainder of the first period before returning to start the second.Edmonton made it 2-0 just prior to the midway point of the second period after some strong forechecking in the Kings zone. Nugent-Hopkins made a kick pass to Taylor Hall and followed up on the play to get the puck back and score his 11th of the season.Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens upheld the two-goal lead with three minutes left in the second on a huge glove save on a point blast from Alec Martinez. The Kings outshot the Oilers 22-16 through 40 minutes.Los Angeles broke Scrivens shutout bid midway through the third, although it took a while to determine. Doughtys rocket from the point was originally thought to have hit the cross bar and the game continued on for another 34 seconds before a stoppage in play allowed a video review, which determined the puck had gone off the camera inside the net.Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said he had a feeling that it would end up being a goal.Drew said it was, he said. Carter said something about the sound of it, he said it didnt sound right. We knew they were going to review it and at the first whistle we knew the league was going to call back. The Kings tied the game with Oiler Justin Schultz in the box for a high-sticking call as Marian Gaborik swung behind the net during a scramble and fed the puck in front to Muzzin, who scored on the short side with just 2:25 remaining in the third.L.A. outshot Edmonton 15-1 in the third period.Scrivens made 39 saves in the victory while Quick stopped 21 shots in defeat. There was an unusual situation in the shootout as the Kings complained about Scrivens having orange tape on the end of his stick and the official went out and taped over it with white.Notes: It was the second of five meetings this season between the two teams. The Kings defeated the Oilers 6-1 on Oct. 14 at Staples Center. The Kings entered the game with seven consecutive wins over Edmonton. … Matt Fraser also made his Oilers debut after being picked up on waivers from the Boston Bruins. … It was the first game that Oilers interim head coach Todd Nelson had the bench to himself, as GM Craig MacTavish returned to the press box. … The Oilers held a moment of silence prior to the game in recognition of the nine people who were killed in what appears to be a case of domestic violence in Edmonton Monday night and Tuesday morning. They actually finished with a better record in ‘07 than they did in ‘06 but only marginally, going from 61 victories to 66. They had a slugging first baseman in Carlos Pena who ripped 46 homers and drove in 121 runs while batting .282. They also had an up-and-coming outfielder in B.J  Upton who hit  300 while ripping 24 homers and driving in 82 runs. The Devil Rays had two pitchers who managed to get into double digits in victories in James Shields who went 12-8 with a 3.85 ERA and left Scott Kazmir who racked up a 13-9 mark with a 3.48 earned run average. They also had a closer in Alberto Reyes who saved 26 games. Otherwise, it was pretty grim. They scored 782 runs but surrendered 944. The team ERA was a horrendous 5.53. Their attendance of 1,387,603 was the worst in the American League. Back-to-back years like ‘06 and ‘07 could have been enough to  cost some managers their jobs, but the Rays had a plan  and they also had some blue chip prospects on the way. In 2006, they drafted a highly regarded third baseman in Evan Longoria third overall,. In 2007 they grabbed hard throwing lefty David Price number one. Those were their best two picks since B.J Upton in 2002. In 2008 Tampa Bay got rid of the Devil and became simply known as the Tampa Bay Rays. The turnaround season was remarkable. They went from 66 victories to 97. They shaved their team ERA from 5.53 to 3.82. The Rays actually scored eight fewer runs in ‘08 than they did in ‘07, but they cut their runs against by 273 to 671. All five of their starters, James Shields, Edwin Jackson, Andy Sonnanstine, Matt Garza and Scott Kazmir -- all betweenn 24 and 26 years of age -- won in double digits with Shields and Jackson leading the way with 14 apiece. Four of the five pitched at least 183 innings. Shields had a staff high 215 and four of the five starters made at least 30 starts. They also added veteran closer Troy Percival who saved 28 games. He also had a great support staff in J.P Howell. Dan Wheeler and Grant Balfour who chipped in with 17 victories. Though Penas numbers dropped off a bit to a ,247 average with  31 homers and 102 runs batted in, Longoria emerged as a force with 27 homers and 85 RBIs while batting .272. Former Blue Jays rookie of the year Eric Hinskie chipped in with 20 homers and 60 runs batted in off the bench. The key though was pitching depth. That 2008 staff had eight pitchers who established themselves as manager league starters including&nbbsp; Shields, Garza, Jason Hammel, Jackson, Kazmir, Sonnanstine, Jeff Niemann and Price who pitched in relief late that season.dddddddddddd The 2008 Rays went all the way to the World Series where they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in five. Over the last six seasons they have racked up a record of (550-423) and been to the post-season four times. The only thing that hasnt improved greatly is their attendance. The incredible season of 2008 boosted the turnstyle count by nearly half a million from the year before to 1,811,986. But by last season the numbers had diminished again to 1,510,300 -- the worst in the American League. The Rays has still never come close to matching the attendance figures of their inaugural season of 1998, when they drew 2,506,293. Its sad really, but at least it is living proof that a well managed, small market club can compete and in fact thrive in the American League East. The Blue Jays have the star power in Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion, some possible blue chippers in Brett Lawrie and Colby Rasmus, a decent bullpen and a couple of solid veteran pitchers in  R,A Dickey and Mark Buehrle. They just havent been able to stay healthy enough or keep grinding out pitching prospects the way the Rays have. Its still too early to predict how the A.L East is going to unfold in 2014, but in some circles, the Rays are already being called to win the division with the Blue Jays to finish last behind Baltimore. The Blue Jays are still waiting for some kind of solid return on the Roy Halladay trade. Back on December 16th of 2009,  they shipped "Doc" to the Phillies  for Kyle Drabek, Travis DArnaud and outfielder Michael Taylor. They wound up flipping Taylor to Oakland for Brett Wallace and then sent Wallace to Houston for Anthony Gose. The Astros designated Wallace for assignment this week when they signed veteran right hander Jerome Williams. Wallace never really developed as a hitter and didnt play well enough defensively at first or third. The Jays are still waiting for Drabek and Gose to arrive as major leaguers and DArnaud was used as part of the package to get R.A Dickey from the Mets. I bring all this up because Halladays illustrious career is now over.  The Phillies are going to honour him on their alumni weekend this summer during a series against the Mets. On Aug. 8 the Phils will hold a special ceremony for Roy and will give the fans a special Halladay bobblehead. That same weekend on Aug. 9, the Phillies will induct Charlie Manuel to their wall of fame. ' ' '

LAS VEGAS -- Chris Paul has already seemingly done the impossible by turning the long-languishing Los Angeles Clippers into a force in the Western Conference. Now hes taken on another big task -- rebuilding the reeling NBA players association. Paul was elected president of the players union Wednesday, replacing Derek Fisher and giving an organization cloaked in turmoil some much-needed star power at the top. The vote by NBA player representatives came six months after the union fired Billy Hunter as executive director, a position that remains vacant and follows about 18 months of in-fighting and drama that occurred during the negotiations for the latest collective bargaining agreement. Hunter countered with a wrongful-termination lawsuit in May, accusing Fisher of conspiring with NBA officials during the 2011 lockout. "Its not about me as president or the first vice-president, its about the players as a whole," Paul said in a conference call Wednesday night. One of Pauls greatest gifts on the court is an ability to get everyone involved and make his teammates better. Now hell try to do the same thing with the union. After the lockout ended and the lawsuits started to take hold, there was a feeling among many players and observers that putting a big name in the big chair would help galvanize the group and get star players interested in participating again. That once was commonplace, with marquee players Bob Cousy, Oscar Robertson, Alex English and Isiah Thomas all serving as union presidents. But Paul, a six-time All-Star who is widely regarded as the best point guard in the league, is the first big star to hold the top spot since Patrick Ewings run ended in 2001. Role players Michael Curry, Antonio Davis and Fisher, who had been in charge since 2006, followed Ewing. "That wasnt a requirement, but I think it gives us a little more oomph, I guess, having somebody like him wanting to step up and take on that role," Charlotte Bobcats forward Anthony Tolliver said in a phone interview. "It means a lot." Paul served as a vice-president for the last four years, so he has intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the union, and the trouble that engulfed it recently. "It was something I saw as a challenge, something I knew Id be able to handle," Paul said. "Its an unbelievable opportunity, a lot of responsibility comes with this position but Im very fortunate to have an outstanding of committee guys. The past couple of days have been outstanding, the dialogue weve had as an executive committee also with the players that have come in town, it was amazing." The decision to appoint a new executive director to replace Hunter will come at a later date. "We definitely discussed (hiring an executive director), but theres no rush," Paul said. "For us, its all about getting our house in order and making sure that everything moves right in that direction." In meetings at the Venetian Hotel, Roger Mason Jr. was elected first vice-president. He replaced Jerry Stackhouse, who resigned from the office and is expected to take a position within the union. There are several issues that the league has been waiting to discuss with the union while they searched for new leadership, most notably the possible implementation of testing for HGH. Commissioner David Stern, who is retiring in February and handing the reins over to deputy commissioner Adam Silver, has said multiple times this summer that testing for HGH was a priority. "Chris is an All-Star player and person and we look forward to working with him," Silver said in a statement. Tolliver, who has long been one of the most devoted player representatives in the league, and Steve Blake were elected vice-presidents, filling the executive committee positions vacated by Paul and Mason. "This is not a position thats about me or one person," Paul said. "Its about the collective group and the players and I think from my experience ... its about growing the game and expanding our brand and continue to get our players involved as we can and make sure our voice is heard. The guys here just understand its our union, theres no one person that is bigger than the group." Paul said the union needed a "rebuild," and he was looking forward to rolling up his sleeves and getting to work. Tolliver agreed, saying it was time for a "fresh start" after a messy time in the unions history. "We want to make sure that nothing remotely close that has gone on in the union in the past 12 months or so will ever happen again," Tolliver said. "Its a huge job. Its a huge responsibility. Im glad to be a part of that." Pauls ascension could pave the way for more involvement from the biggest names in the game. LeBron James considered running for the job before deciding against it, and Paul is an All-NBA first team player who has been tight with James for years. "Since Ive been in the NBA the superstars have come to a few meetings here and there, every once in a while, but not very often," Tolliver said. "The fact that (James) even considered doing that lets me know that hes going to be more involved in the future. ... Especially him being the face of our game, we want to have him involved as much as possible. Not only him, we want all the guys that carry our brand to be a part of this." Air Max 95 Baratas . Watch the game live on TSN and TSN GO at 9pm et/6pm pt. The Thunder earned their first win of the set with Sundays 106-97 victory and Ibaka played a big role. After suffering a left calf strain against the Los Angeles Clippers in the previous round, Ibaka was ruled out for the remainder of the postseason. He missed the first two games of the conference finals in San Antonio, but word changed on Friday that the big man had improved tremendously and was considered day-to-day. Ibaka started Game 3 and dominated early, going 4-for-4 from the floor in first quarter. He finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in just under 30 grueling, limping minutes. "I was so emotional, but you couldnt really tell because I was on the court," Ibaka said. "I just want to thank my teammates, thank Russell, he tried to get me going early in the game. Kevin (Durant), (Kendrick) Perkins, Reggie (Jackson). I will never stop thanking them for tonight. I will never forget that. It was very special tonight." Without Ibaka, the Thunder allowed the Spurs to shoot at least 50 percent in the first two tilts and San Antonio won them by a combined 52 points. The Spurs shot just 39.6 percent (36-of-91) from the floor in Game 3. Westbrook finished 8-of-19 from the field after missing seven of his first eight shots, netting 26 points to go with eight rebounds and seven assists. Durant added 25 points and 10 boards for the Thunder, who held a commanding 52-36 advantage on the glass. Reggie Jackson, who was inserted into the starting lineup for Thabo Sefolosha, also had 15 in the win. Manu Ginobili nailed six 3-pointers and scored 23 points for San Antonio, which hass dropped eight straight to the Thunder in OKC, including the postseason.dddddddddddd. Tim Duncan added 16 and Kawhi Leonard chipped in 10 in the loss. "I was very disappointed that we didnt come out with more of a foot in the neck sort of an attitude," admitted Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "They killed us on the board, they beat us on 50/50 balls, and thats very disappointing to me. Thats not the way you approach a game." Ibaka carried OKC in the first quarter, but San Antonio led by one after the first 12 minutes. Westbrook nailed a pair of pull-up triples in the final 30 seconds of the half, including one at the buzzer to give the Thunder a 57-53 cushion heading into the break. Two Perkins free throws at the 8:36 mark of the third capped a 10-2 burst and gave the Thunder a 67-57 cushion. His bonus shots provided OKC its first points not supplied by either Durant or Westbrook since a Jackson floater with 4:01 to play in the second. Ginobili nailed a left wing trey to pull San Antonio within 75-71 with 2:46 to go in the period, but the Thunder extended the margin to 83-76 at the conclusion of the third and then put the game away early in the fourth. Oklahoma Citys lead grew to as many as 20 and the Spurs couldnt get it into single digits. "I think the biggest thing that changed was the intensity on the defensive end," said Durant. "We still turned the ball over more than we should have, but I think we always had great intentions and we moved the ball from side to side tonight." In league history, 94 percent of teams to open a seven-game set 2-0 have gone on to advance. The Spurs sadly know all about the six percent. San Antonio held this exact margin in the 2012 Western Conference finals against Oklahoma City, only to lose the next four and watch the Thunder lose to the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. Game 5 will be Thursday night in San Antonio. ' ' '

Boris Diaw was on his way out of the NBA when he arrived in San Antonio, where the Spurs were trying to breathe new life into a core that had not won a championship in five years. They proved to be a perfect match, and after playing a key role in the Spurs latest championship, Diaw found no reason to continue his career renaissance elsewhere. Diaw tweeted Sunday night that he agreed to terms on a new contract with the Spurs and a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press that its a three-year contract worth $22 million. The person requested anonymity because the contract cannot be signed until the leagues moratorium ends Thursday. "Hey spurs fans, Good news," the French-born Diaw tweeted, "i stay in san antonio for a few more years. Lets win it again." For the 32-year-old Diaw, it was a chance to get one last big payday that he earned by providing some essential versatility on both ends of the court for the Spurs. He averaged 9.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists and shot over 52 per cent in 25 minutes per game last season. For the Spurs, it was the chance to keep together a team that posted the best record in the NBA last season and dominated the two-time defending champion Miami Heat in the finals. They have already learned this summer that Tim Duncan is returning next season and backup point guard Patty Mills will be back as well after a long rehabilitation of a shoulder injury. The Spurs decided to give Diaw a hearty raise after watching him blossom in a system Gregg Popovich designed to keep the ball moving at all costs. But they also protected themselves by only partially guaranteeing the third year of the deal, which was first reported by Yahoo! Sports. He will be guaranteed $15.5 million over the first two seasons of the contract, a big boost from the $4.7 million he made last year. "Hes perfect for them," former Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman said about Diaw and the Spurs during the season. Diaw was considered a rising star in the early portion of his career in Phoenix, a lithe, athletic, big man with the vision of a point guard that flourished with the run-and-gun Suns. But his career nose-dived soon after when he was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats in 2008. He put on weight and didnt appear interested in playing for a team with no hope of contending. The Bobcats waived Diaw near the end of the 2012 season, and the Spurs brought him in to see if he could rediscover his game while playing alongside close friend and countryman Tony Parker. Thats exactly what happened. It didnt take long for Diaw to make a good impression with Popovich, and he signed a two-year deal to stay with the Spurs that summer. He still carries a few extra pounds, but the deft passing, precise defensive positioning and floor-stretching shooting all have reappeared and been vital to San Antonios two straight finals appearances and its run this spring to a fifth championship. ___ Follow Jon Krawczynski on Twitter: http://twitter.com/APKrawczynski Cheap Yeezys Real . -- Kevin Stadler might be playing in the Masters for the first time, but hes already showing his old man a thing or two. And once you look at it, it changes nothing for us, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said Friday. This isnt staying or leaving. This is businessmen doing what they do, so this has zero effect on us.Even so, the latest news had to send a jolt through Coyotes fans in the desert. It came on Thursday, when the New York Post reported IceArizona was in the process of selling a majority stake in the Coyotes to Andrew Barroway, a Philadelphia hedge fund manager whos made unsuccessful attempts to buy the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders.Speculation swirled throughout the day until the Coyotes released a statement confirming that they are in discussions with an unsolicited potential investor. In the release, the Coyotes said no deal was in place and no members of the IceArizona group would give up ownership of the team, calling it a positive step for the future of the team.NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly later said there should be no concerns about ownership of the Coyotes nor were there any plans for relocating the franchise. The news barely causeed a ripple among the Coyotes players as they got ready for the teams final preseason game Friday night.ddddddddddddIm pretty sure no ones too concerned in our room, Arizona captain Shane Doan said. This is a minor, minor, minor, minor thing compared to the previous five years. Its not a big deal. What the Coyotes went through before was a wild ride.It started in 2009, when owner Jerry Moyes took the team into bankruptcy in a failed attempt to sell it to Blackberry founder Jim Balsillie, who planned to move the franchise to Hamilton, Ontario. The NHL and city of Glendale fought the plan in court and the team was sold to the league later that year.Over the next four years, one potential owner stepped forward and fell back as rumours of relocating the franchise swirled.Renaissance Sports and Entertainment, managing partner of IceArizona, finally got a deal done last year.Even then it wasnt easy.RSE reached a purchase agreement with the NHL, but went through tense negotiations with the city of Glendale over a lease agreement for Jobing.com Arena. Amid speculation that the NHL would move the team to Seattle if the $225 million deal fell through, Glendales City Council approved it by a 4-3 vote and IceArizona later completed its purchase from the league. The members of IceArizona, headed by George Gosbee and Anthony LeBlanc, appeared to be pleased with the team in their first season and the team took another step toward stability by signing a nine-year partnership with Gila River Casinos that includes naming rights for the arena. But just when the foundation appeared to be stable, it wobbled at least a little bit with this latest news, even if it didnt shake the Coyotes.I kind of chuckled in the fact that we were going to get asked questions about ownership again, Doan said. Other than that, nothings really changed so its not anything Im really too worried about. ' ' '

PHILADELPHIA - The official news came this week that the Philadelphia 76ers — the forlorn franchise of the NBA — had signed an all-star forward and All-First Team defensive pick.Just dont rush out quite yet for a jersey — its Malcolm Thomas, an NBA Development League all-star for the Austin Toros.Thomas will earn a nice pay bump, first-class travel, fantastic coaching, and call himself an NBA player. But given expectations of the 76ers this season, he as may as well still play in the D-League.If they win 15 games, former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy said, they will have overachieved to the highest level.Think a 26-game losing streak and 19 wins under coach Brett Brown was pretty lousy last season? This years Sixers may tumble their way toward NBA infamy with a collection of castoffs. The losses should stamp them the favourite for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft — and the record book as one of the worst teams in NBA history. The Sixers have mastered the art of tanking, fielding a noncompetitive roster in hopes of better odds at high draft picks and potential franchise players.Foolproof plan, right? Look how the Sixers became championship contenders after selecting Evan Turner with the No. 2 overall pick in 2010. OK, bad example. With the approval of team owner Joshua Harris, 76ers president Sam Hinkie has set course for a dip in the standings for several seasons with the wildly optimistic expectation that the franchise will rise into title contention in three or four years. That means lottery picks Michael Carter-Williams, Joel Embiid, Nerlens Noel and Dario Saric will all blossom into all-stars and at least one, maybe two, will become franchise-type players. That means Hinkie wont whiff on future picks or get burned on trades. That means star free-agents will bypass Miami, New York, Cleveland, San Antonio, and flock to Philly. Can all of that happen?Maybe. But for now, a championship parade through downtown Philadelphia is just a wild dream.None of their nine first-round picks preceding Carter-Williams in 2013 play for the Sixers. None helped the Sixers ever advance out of the second round of the playoffs.Thaddeus Young, Lou Williams, Nic Vucevic and Andre Iguodala were on the 2011-12 Sixers that made it to the Eastern Conference semifinals. Thinking they were on the cusp of a breakthrough, the Sixers traded Iguodala and Vucevic to get Los Angeles Lakers centre Andrew Bynum.Bynum never played a game in his lone season with the Sixers because of bad knees and the franchise unraveled. Its a little painful right now to be a former Sixer and see the losses and all, former 76ers player and coach Doug Collins said. When the team opens the season Wednesday at Indiana, Jason Richardson — injured and facing retirement — will be the only player left from when Hinkie took over the team in May 2013.Some good news for Carter-Williams, the NBA rookie of the year has been cleared to return to practice following shoulder surgery on Nov. 6 and could return a week later. The Sixers play their home opener Saturday against Miami in front of what should be a packed Wells Fargo Center, but are having trouble selling tickets beyond that.I can ... see why you would never buy a ticket right now because its a substandard product, Van Gundy said. One that Hinkie — and his analytics-minded front office — has vowed to improve. As of Monday, the 76ers had just $32 million committed to this seasons payroll, the lowest figure in the league by about $20 million. They have only $4.6 million on the books for next season (Laker star Kobe Bryant will earn $23.5 million alone this season), giving the downtrodden franchise millions to offer free agents in 2015 and beyond. But what player with any competitive spirit would want to sign with Philadelphia?Money always talks, but it will take a brave all-star or two to decide the Sixers are headed into contention. At some point, youve got to develop a culture of winning and winning habits and gaining some results so the guys can believe it, former NBA coach and all-star guard Mark Jackson said. Because that can fester and be like a disease youve got to rid those guys of in order to get a winning culture. The Sixers already scored their biggest win of the season when NBA owners failed to pass draft lottery reform last week. The team with the worst record will still have a 25 per cent chance at getting the top pick and cannot drop lower than fourth.Hinkie isnt swayed even though his method has been nicknamed Tankadelphia.A lot of it is, where does your self-worth come from, Hinkie asked. Do you need people every day telling you youre doing well? Do you need the masses every day telling you that they agree with you? Or do you have some higher purpose in mind?Hinkie says he does. Hes betting his career and the teams future that the Sixers can hit the championship jackpot with a bunch of winning lottery tickets. Gary Carter Jersey . To make roster room, Toronto designated right-hander Jeremy Jeffress for assignment. "With the last couple of starts, we didnt get a whole lot out of our starters," manager John Gibbons said Saturday prior to an afternoon game against the New York Yankees. "We needed some length." Toronto used five pitchers after starter Dustin McGowan lasted just 2 2/3 innings in a 7-3 loss to the Yankees on Friday night. Brandon Morrow went five innings, with two relievers coming on after in a 7-2 loss Thursday in Tampa. The Friday night loss marked the third time in five games this season that the Jays have allowed 11-plus hits. The Jays had looked at bringing up Chad Jenkins but because hes on the 40-man roster hes not eligible to be brought up until April 11 -- unless in the case of an injury replacement. The 25-year-old Walden has maade one appearance with the Bisons this season, pitching a scoreless inning.dddddddddddd The six-foot 195-pound pitcher made 26 starts for the double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats of the Eastern League last season, recording a 6-14 record with a 3.71 ERA. "He impressed me during spring training," said Gibbons. " He can throw some innings for you, hes used to starting. And he throws strikes, thats the key." The hard-throwing Jeffress gave up three hits and one run in one inning of relief Friday night against New York. "We like Jeffress potential," said Gibbons. "He did a nice job for us in September but he didnt get off to a real good start. Thats the reality of the business ... He was the odd man out." General manager Alex Anthopoulos, meanwhile, said pitcher J.A. Happ was slated to throw a rehab assignment in Dunedin on Saturday night barring weather issues. A back issue has resulted in Happ, who was pencilled in for a spot in the starting rotation, starting the season on the disabled list. ' ' '

NEW YORK – For a stretch of 10 minutes in the middle frame of the first Stanley Cup Final game at MSG in 20 years, the New York Rangers fired 13 consecutive shots at the goal of the L.A. Kings. Jonathan Quick turned aside each and every one of them and so many more - 32 in all - as he and the Kings nudged the Rangers to the brink of elimination on a sticky Monday night in Manhattan. “He was obviously the best player on the ice tonight,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said glumly afterward. Asked what went wrong, Vigneault deferred to Quick. “We couldnt score,” he said. This was a flashback to the remarkable Quick of two years earlier, the Quick who rung up three shutouts and a .946 save percentage in a near-flawless march to the Kings first Stanley Cup. The now 28-year-old hadnt been nearly as dominant this time around. He entered Game 3 with a mild .906 save percentage while sprinkling in the usual assortment of game-changing stops, including a breakaway save on Carl Hagelin in the dying moments of regulation in Game 1. “I think that was his best game of the playoffs,” Drew Doughty said of Quick in a visitors dressing room that remained cool and business-like, despite the Cup drawing near. “He played fantastic for us tonight. He made some big saves, saves he had no business making.” Most memorable and crowd-deafening among them was a heroic stop on Mats Zuccarello in the opening period, one that saw the Kings netminder employ every last ounce of will to keep the puck from crossing the line – the net appeared open – his paddle the ultimate saving grace. Some on the L.A. bench, including captain Dustin Brown, thought Zuccarello simply missed the gaping cage only to discover later on replay that it was Quick who kept it out. “Hes the best in the world,” said Jarret Stoll. “Hes going to come up with those saves sometimes, it doesnt surprise us.” His brilliance only continued thereafter. Amid the aforementioned barrage of shots in a second period plagued with penalties – L.A. was a perfect on six penalty kills – Quick calmly brushed aside Rick Nashs hard charge to the net before swatting Derick Brassards attempt away for another glowing stick save. Brown, also a teammate of Quick with the American squad internationally, is past being surprised by such theatrics in the crease. “The best example is playing at the Olympics and seeing other guys react to it and Im just sitting there because Ive played with him long enough and hes made enough of those saves you kind of expect him to do it,” said Brown. Born in nearby Connecticut and a Rangers fan growing up – the 90-minute drive kept him from attending many games – Quick had never played an NHL game in the historic Mecca of New York hockey, though he did take to the ice briefly as a 12-year-old in one rare visit. This performance will surely eclipse such a memory. Cloaked in a hoodie and sweats afterward, Quick downplayed any added meaning to his debut on the hallowed ice of MSG. “It meant it was a playoff hockey game,” he said slyly. “We were trying to win a hockey game.”  One more and the taste will be a whole lot sweeter. Cain departed in the fourth inning of a 10-5 loss to the Pirates on Thursday. X-rays on Cains bruised forearm were negative. He was hit when Sanchez led off the fourth with a groundout. It was back in late January 2011 when Liverpool announced on their website they had rejected a bid from Chelsea for Fernando Torres. The offer was reported to be worth £40 million. After failing to land Torres shortly after Chelsea had completed a domestic double in May 2010, Roman Abramovich would not be denied a third time. Just before the clock struck midnight on the closing day of the January 2011 transfer window Chelsea announced on their website the signing of a player the owner craved most. Where Liverpool had adamantly stated through a club spokesperson only a few days earlier that the player fastest in the clubs history to register 50 league goals was not for sale, even they could not turn down an English transfer record for the then 26-year old Spaniard. Robinhos summer 2008 move to Manchester City for £32.5 million had stood as the record until Abramovich wrote that now infamous £50 million cheque to Liverpool for Torres. A player entering his supposed prime years, who only six months earlier had helped Spain bask in the glory of a very first World Cup triumph. We all know now of course that Torres would not ever rediscover the form for Chelsea he displayed in abundance during his early seasons at Anfield. His debut season in English football, where Torres became the first Liverpool player in over two decades to score twenty league goals, and 33 in all competitions was followed up in 2008/2009 with a nomination on the three-man short list for FIFA World Player of the Year. This though was a season where Torres was hampered by a number of hamstring injuries which restricted him to only 24 BPL appearances. It ended with Liverpool recording their best-ever finish in the BPL era, a runners up spot in a season where they pushed Manchester United all the way to the title. The following season, which culminated in that South African World Cup triumph, was ended early due to a recurring knee injury which required surgery on two occasions. The second of which in April 2010 made Torres a huge doubt to even make Del Bosques squad. Make it though Torres did. There would be no match-winning heroics like at EURO 2008 where the lone Torres marker late in the first half was enough for Spain to overcome Germany in the final. Appearing in a World Cup Final is the dream of all footballers, the pinnacle of any professional career. For Torres it heralded the beginning of the end. Regime change at Anfield in summer 2010 with Hodgson replacing Benitez likely hastened the Spaniards desire to leave Liverpool and the club which launched him into the conversation as one of the most feared strikers in all of world football. MMuch like loaned out players who are prevented from appearing against their own clubs, Torres would most definitely have preferred that his Chelsea debut did not come against Liverpool.dddddddddddd For Liverpool supporters at Stamford Bridge, February 6, 2011 afforded an opportunity to let Torres know how they felt. In the crowd that day I was keenly interested to see how they and Torres would react with their almost instant reunion. I got my answer as the two teams emerged from the tunnel area and onto the pitch. Out into the glare of the cameras and floodlights, Torres glanced knowingly to the section of the ground where he knew the 3,000 Liverpool supporters would be. He Who Betrays Will Always Walk Alone one banner read. Taunting Torres each time he touched the ball, Ancelotti had seen enough when he hauled a clearly affected Torres off just after the hour mark. There would be no loving glance to the Liverpool supporters as he took his place on that vastly expensive Chelsea bench. The man with the £50 million price tag weighed him down like an anchor for the remainder of that 2010/11 season. Torres only scored a solitary goal, which came in his fourteenth appearance, during a BPL match in late April against West Ham. A muddy pitch playing its part as Torres slotted home late in the game, the relief all around was evident in the celebration. In all Torres would play three more frustrating seasons in West London. The goals didnt flow but the titles did. An FA Cup, Champions League and a Europa League for Chelsea and the EURO 2012 crown, in a competition where Torres was top scorer. For the defining image of his Chelsea career the jury is still out, and always will be. Was it that moment back in September 2011 where he wanted the Old Trafford pitch to swallow him hole after he slumped to his knees having rounded De Gea and then proceeded to miss the simplest of open goals? Or was it when he left Victor Valdes on his knees as he rounded the Barcelona goalkeeper in that April 2012 Champions League semifinal second leg, scoring the decisive goal en route to Chelseas only ever Champions League triumph in Munich a few weeks later? Abramovich might be poorer because of the close to $100 million he lavished on Torres, but the club the billionaire Russian owns are certainly richer for it. With Torres expected to go out on loan next month from the San Siro to Atlético Madrid, the club he has supported since childhood and who he captained at only 19, what price if the two teams are paired again in the later stages of this seasons Champions League? Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oklahoma City Thunder did not need any more bad news on the injury front, but thats exactly what they got Tuesday when Perry Jones went down with a knee injury in a game against the Toronto Raptors. Jones collided with Patrick Patterson on a drive to the basket early in the third quarter and was helped back to the locker room to have his right knee examined. The Thunder had just eight healthy players at tip-off, and Jones, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on the same knee in July, was one of their few playmakers. The third-year forward was forced to take on a bigger role because of injuries to stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook and was averaging 18.5 points per game over the first four contests. SAN FRANCISCO -- Even with standouts Bryce Harper and Gio Gonzalez on the disabled list, the Washington Nationals are shutting down the team with the best record in baseball and taking over the title as the leagues hottest club. Jayson Werth hit his first homer in almost a month and drove in three runs, and the Nationals capitalized on Matt Cains erratic start to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-2 Wednesday night for their fourth straight win. "We kind of got Cain on the ropes early, got his pitch count up, got some big hits early to kind of set the tone for the game," Werth said. "Its hard to recover from." Cain (1-4) walked the first three batters he faced before Adam LaRoches two-run single during a three-run first inning. Werths solo shot in the fifth and two-run single in the ninth provided the rest of the pop for the Nationals, who have won 10 of 12, including the last three at San Francisco. Former third baseman Ryan Zimmerman made a pair of diving catches in left field to highlight a stellar defensive effort, and Tanner Roark (5-4) allowed two runs and seven hits in six-plus innings to propel Washington to another win. "Were playing great as a team right row," said Roark, who struck out four and walked none. "Just keep it going. Its exciting." Brandon Crawford and Pablo Sandoval each drove in a run for the Giants, who have lost a season-high tying three straight after winning five in a row. Cains struggles might have been the most disappointing thing of all for the Giants. In his second start since a stint on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring, the former ace reverted back to his early season woes against Washington. Cain gave up four runs and three hits in five innings, walking five and striking out four. "It was too much of a deficit to come back from. We needed a better start than that. I wanted some clean innings. I made it too difficult," Cain said. The finale of the four-game series is Thursday, but the NL East-leading Nationals already have handed San Francisco its first series loss since losing two of three at Pittsburgh from May 5-7. Beforee the Nationals showed up in San Francisco this week, the Giants had not lost two in a row since May 16-17 to the Marlins.dddddddddddd The Nationals are doing it by getting contributions at the plate, on the mound and in the field. After Crawfords RBI triple in the fourth, second baseman Danny Espinosa made a diving stop on Gregor Blancos sharp grounder and threw out the speedy runner at first. Zimmerman, filling in for Harper in left, also swiped another run from San Francisco in the sixth when he made a diving catch of Crawfords slicing fly after Michael Morse doubled. "Im kind of learning on the fly," Zimmerman said. "Got a good break on it. It kept tailing away. I dove and caught it. The landing wasnt very smooth, but in the end, I caught the ball." Sandoval, scratched from the starting lineup because of an illness, singled home a run as a pinch-hitter in the seventh to whittle Washingtons lead to 4-2. Zimmerman slid in to snag Angel Pagans short fly for the third out. With his back right leg almost touching the dirt, Werth went low to launch his sixth homer of the season to put the Nationals up 4-1 in the fifth. Werth, who had not homered since May 14 at Arizona, singled with two outs in the ninth off Yusmeiro Petit to extend Washingtons lead to 6-2. Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard and Jerry Blevins each tossed a scoreless inning to help Washington finish off San Francisco again. Closer Rafael Soriano had been warming up in the bullpen before Werths single. "The best part about that is we could put the big scary guy back in his cage," Werth said, "and save him for (Thursday)." NOTES: The Nationals placed catcher Wilson Ramos on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring and called up catcher Sandy Leon from Triple-A Syracuse. ... The Giants traded left-hander David Huff back to the Yankees for cash. He was sent to San Francisco in January for cash after the Yankees signed Masahiro Tanaka. ... Tim Hudson (6-2, 1.97 ERA) takes the mound for the Giants opposite Washingtons Blake Treinen (0-2, 1.78 ERA) in Thursdays series finale. ' ' '

The last six months have been a whirlwind for Kevin Dineen. In October he was coaching the NHLs Florida Panthers. But after being fired in November, he was named the Canadian womens team coach and guided the squad to a stirring fourth straight Olympic title in Sochi, Russia. Dineen is now with a third team, preparing the Canadian under-18 mens squad to defend its world title in Finland. "Its been (a whirlwind) but you know what, its a hockey life," Dineen said. "You have tough times with the lows, you get fired and its an emotional deal. "As I told the women before the gold medal game, I knew the day I was hired I had to be on my toes and it was kind of like someone lit a match under my fanny. I just really enjoyed that whole process. You never know how those things are going to end. "Just like this one, you dont know. Weve got to have some luck and have some things work in our favour but its not always about the ending. Its about the ride youre on, it really is." The 50-year-old Quebec City native will have plenty of international experience at his disposal when Canada begins its title defence Thursday against Sweden in Imatra, Finland. Thirteen players on the roster participated in last years under-17 World Hockey Challenge in Quebec while eight skated in this years under-17 event in Cape Breton, N.S. And nine players helped Canada win gold at the Ivan Hlinka tournament last summer. However, Dineens biggest challenge is quickly moulding his players into a tightly knit team. "Yes there are challenges like having to gel and find some chemistry in a timely manner," he said. "A lot of the European teams have been together for a while and the Americans are centralized all year so those teams have an advantage. "But thats what makes it fun putting this team together. These boys are really excited to represent Canada and that works in our favour. Theyre sharp kids." And big, with 14 players being six feet or taller. But its still a team, Dineen says, that can excel on the larger international ice surface. "Even though I talk about our size, that does not in any way take away from our skill," Dineen said. "I think were a team that has some skill and I believe we can compete with any team. "That makes it enjoyable to have those guys who can play the game anyway we need to play to have success." Dineen is familiar with international hockey. He played for Canada six times, claiming world championship silver medals in 85 and 89 and winning the 87 Canada Cup. The 19-year NHL veteran also wore the Maple Leaf at the 84 Winter Games. In December, he joined a national womens program stinging from coach Dan Churchs sudden resignation and having lost four straight pre-Olympic tuneups to the archrival United States. In Russia, Canada beat the Americans twice, including a thrilling 3-2 overtime decision in the gold medal game after trailing 2-0 late in regulation. "If you were going to ride a roller-coaster and go the top, I couldnt have done better than that," Dineen said. "I had a pretty good buzz for about three weeks after Sochi, just enjoying it and the enjoyment people got out of that tournament. "Thats a special moment for Canada and you can compound that a lot for me and the players as well." Since Sochi, Dineen has been overwhelmed by people anxious to share their Olympic experience. That includes former NHL goalie Fred Brathwaite, now an assistant coach on the under-18 squad. "He was telling me he was on Highway 401 driving to a game and couldnt watch but found it on the radio," Dineen said. "After we scored in overtime, there was like 50 people around him all honking their horns. "A fireman from Hamilton told me how they were so mad they had to leave on a call during the game and when they returned there was skiing on TV. They thought theyd missed it but it was just the holdover until overtime. The next thing you know, the whole firehouse was watching and went bonkers. "When you hear those stories -- and Ive heard literally hundreds and will never tire of anybodys story -- its pretty special. Im not afraid to share those experiences with these boys." Moose Jaw Warriors forward Brayden Point, a late cut from last years team, said Dineen has quickly made an impression on his young players. "Hes an awesome guy," said the 18-year-old Calgary native. " Hes got real good systems and hes really good with the players. "Everyone respects him a ton and its real easy to learn from him." Kingston Frontenacs defenceman Roland McKeown, a returnee from last years squad, said Dineens message is a simple one. "Hes preaching the Canadian way," McKeown said. "At the Olympics you saw how dominant the mens and womens teams were and that was doing it the Canadian way with hard work, that two-way game and everyone buying into a role. "Thats what were going to do." The six-foot-one 195-pound McKeown, an 18-year-old native of Listowel, Ont., hopes last years experience helps him become a key contributor this time. "Last year proved every guy has to take a role and buy in to win a championship," he said. "I gained a lot of experience from the guys who were here last year and want to use that to take a leadership role with this team." Dineen has taken an unplanned detour to land behind the under-18 teams bench, but hes a better coach because of it. "I coached six years in the American Hockey League and always took pride in being able to work with either veterans or young players but these guys are all young," Dineen said. "That really makes it enjoyable because theyre a good bunch. "To me, thats one of the advantages, just coming here and working with these players. Youre getting better every day and thats a good thing for me." Josh Reddick Jersey . Dallan Cave and Brennan Holligan hit two-run homers, lefty reliever Austin Kryszczuk got out of two big jams, and Las Vegas beat Philadelphia and its star pitcher 8-1 in the Little League World Series on Wednesday night. Davis, just the 18th girl to play in the Little League World Series and the only one to win a game on the mound, took the loss. "Mone didnt have her A game today," Philly manager Alex Rice said. "At this point, were playing to get to Saturday." The victory puts Las Vegas in Saturdays U.S. title game and sends Philadelphia into an elimination game on Thursday night against Chicagos Jackie Robinson West in a matchup of inner-city teams. The Great Lakes champion beat Pearland, Texas 6-1 on Tuesday night in an elimination game. "I think its terrific," Rice said. "Ive been looking forward to playing Chicago since we got here." Davis, the darling of the sports world with her amazing success and poise, was both masterful and ordinary on a night made short because of pitch-count rules. She allowed three runs and six hits and struck out six in 2 1-3 innings before leaving after 55 pitches. That makes her eligible to pitch again in the U.S. championship game on Saturday. Davis played first after her stint on the mound and was switched to right field in the top of the sixth, but she dazzled her opponents more than once on the mound with off-speed deliveries and tantalizing pitches just off the plate. "Shes very crafty," said Kryszczuk, who picked up the victory. "Shes a great pitcher. That triple in the first was huge and then she settled down. Great job by us to get this victory." The grassy hill beyond the outfield fences at Howard J. Lamade Stadium was jammed with so many cheering fans in lawn chairs that it looked like the bleacher section at any ballpark as 34,128 fans craned to see every pitch. And they had an effect on Las Vegas, an afterthought at best to many before the game. "The crowd got to us at times. It was hard to communicate," Las Vegas manager Ashton Cave said. "Thats a big weight to carry on a 13-year-olds shoulders what goes on publicly. They definitely deserve the attention that they get, but we have the first Nevada team in history in 75 years to make it to this point. To come through and do what weve done, were just definitely making a mark." The 5-foot-4 Davis, who has given the Taney Youth Baseball Association Little League in Philadelphia notoriety no one could have imagined, tries to use the first two innings to get to know the home plate umpires strike zone, and the first time through the order gauges where the opposing players dont like the ball. It worked like a charm in her first outing in the World Series as she pitched a two-hit shutout. She didnt get that chance on this night against hard-hitting Las Vegas, which had outsccored its first two opponents 25-4.dddddddddddd Davis, her long braids flopping over her shoulders on every pitch, allowed hits to the first two batters as Philadelphia fell behind. Leadoff hitter Zach Hare lofted a soft single to centre and Kryszczuk followed with a resounding triple to right centre for a 1-0 lead. Unfazed, Davis struck out the side, getting Holligan looking and Brad Stone and Andrew Matulich swinging. Philadelphia threatened in the bottom of the first, but Las Vegas right fielder Alex Barker made a dazzling diving catch at the warning track of a drive by Jack Rice to end the inning and strand two Philly runners. "It was amazing," said Stone, who found out he was starting in warmups. After reaching back for something extra to get out of that first-inning jam, Davis sputtered again. Cave slammed a two-run shot to left-centre, a liner that just cleared the fence for a 3-0 lead. Josiah Cromwick and Hare followed with singles, but Davis settled down again and struck out Kryszczuk swinging and Holligan looking again. She left in the top of the third in favour of lefty Erik Lipson, but she wasnt through competing. After falling behind 0-2 in the count in her second at-bat, Davis worked a walk with runners at second and third and Zion Spearman scored when the fourth ball bounded away from the catcher. When Tai Shanahan followed with a perfect bunt single in front of the plate, the Philadelphia fans began chanting "Lets go Taney! Lets go Taney!" But Kryszczuk came on in relief and Las Vegas escaped. He got Lipson looking at a third strike and Eli Simon lined into a double play to end the threat. In the fifth, Kryszczuk struck out Spearman swinging with two runners on. Las Vegas tacked on five runs in the top of the sixth, keyed by an RBI double by Hare and Holligans homer. Las Vegas entered the game on a serious roll. The Mountain Ridge Little League champions beat Rapid City, South Dakota 12-2 and then routed Chicago 13-2 in four innings in a mercy-rule game on Sunday behind five homers, a grand slam by Stone and two from Kryszczuk. Davis began her eye-opening appearance in the showcase event by throwing a two-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over Nashville. She had eight strikeouts and didnt walk a batter and needed only 70 pitches to complete the game. Davis also threw a three-hit shutout to lead Taney to an 8-0 victory over Delaware in the Mid-Atlantic Regional championship game, so she has a flair for the dramatic. The glare of the spotlight on Davis and her teammates only grew as newly elected Major League Baseball Commissioner-elect Rob Manfred threw the ceremonial first pitch a day after Davis became the first Little Leaguer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. "Last week, this week, maybe next week, shes owned the sports conversation," Sports Illustrated manager editor Chris Stone said. "How often do you get to say this about a 13-year-old girl? Its the easiest type of story to identify as a cover story." ' ' '

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild rattled a 26-year-old rookie goalie on Tuesday night. The way they were clicking, it might not have mattered who was in the goal. Zach Parise scored twice and Josh Harding continued his dominance in goal to lead the Wild to a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames. Flames goalie Reto Berra, who beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks 3-2 in overtime in his NHL debut on Sunday, stopped 13 of 15 shots through two periods, keeping the Flames in the game with a handful of saves on point-blank shots. But the Wild broke through with three goals in the third, including two in a 33-second span, that left Calgary head coach Bob Hartley shaking his head. "The goals that they scored, you could have taped Patrick Roy, (Ed) Belfour and (Martin) Brodeur together and we wouldnt have won that game," Hartley said. "They were so much better than us, they deserved the two points." Parises second goal, in particular, was a product of precision passing by Ryan Suter and Mikko Koivu that left Berra reeling and gave Parise half the net as his target. "You always like getting those on your tape when the goalie is sliding the other way," Parise said. "It was such a nice play by (Koivu and Suter) and I just happened to be the recipient. That was a world-class pass by Mikko. That was a little bit of a gift." Koivu, who posted his first multi-point night of the season with a goal and two assists, helped the Wild recover from a sluggish start after Calgarys Jiri Hudler opened the scoring with his sixth goal of the season. Minnesotas captain chipped in a rebound over Berras shoulder to tie the score just 4 minutes after Hudlers goal and the Wild were off and running. "I like the way we responded, getting the quick reply, especially who got it for us," Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said. "That was a good message to the group that we were going to bounce back." Parise put the Wild ahead 2-1 with a power-play goal at 6:28 of the second period. Suter passed to Parise at the edge of the crease, where he was stonewalled by Berra. But the rebound bounced right back to Parise, who knocked it past the sprawled goaltender. Still, Berra kept the Flames close until the Wild struck twice midway through the third period to break the game open. First, Justin Fontaine gave the Wild a 3-1 lead, carrying the puck from behind the net before firing a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle that slipped past Berra. On the ensuing shift, Torrey Mitchell feathered a pass to Zenon Konopka on a 2-on-1 break, and Konopka beat Berra on the short side for his first goal of the year. "For sure I have to watch video about one or two goals," Berra said. "Maybe I should have those, but the other ones were just pretty nice plays." Meanwhile, Harding stopped 24 of 25 shots to win his fifth straight start. He leads the NHL with a 1.10 goals-against average and .950 save percentage and has given up just 12 goals in his last 12 starts. "Its impressive -- thats all you can say. Its really impressive," Yeo said. "What good goaltending allows you to do is, sometimes youre not quite there, but it allows you to find your game, and hes done that for us." NOTES: Harding entered the game with a 6-0-0 record and a 1.06 GAA in home games this season. ... Flames D Chad Billins made his NHL debut and assisted on Hudlers goal. ... Alex Rodriguez Jersey .C. -- The Edmonton Oilers used a late-power-play goal to get a hard-fought road victory.COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Gabriel Landeskogs late goal scoring kept the Colorado Avalanches winning streak going. Landeskog scored twice, including a power-play goal at 4:27 of overtime to help the Avalanche extend their winning streak to four with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Columbus on Tuesday night. All three of Colorados goals went in off Columbus players. "We were the best shooters in the game tonight versus our own guy," Columbus coach Todd Richards said. "You might see one, might see two. Three is a lot and that was all of their goals." Rookie scoring leader Nathan MacKinnon, centring the top line with Matt Duchene expected to miss a month with a knee injury, assisted on Landeskogs tying and winning scores. "After the second going into the third we talked about not finding any excuses," Landeskog said of his team that was down 2-0. "Not using any injuries or what-not as an excuse. And its an opportunity for a lot of guys to step up and a lot of guys did. We played a playoff-type of third period." Semyon Varlamov stopped 24 shots -- including a prime chance by Blake Comeau late in regulation to pick up his league-leading 38th win. With 102 points, Colorado moved three ahead of Chicago for second place in the Central Division. "We keep working hard and we believe in ourselves," Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said. "I think thats one of the reasons we came back." Cam Atkinson and Comeau scored in the second period for Columbus, which is hanging on to the second wild-card spot and eighth playoff seed in the Eastern Conference. "Youd like to get two points but we did get one," Richards said. "And that might be a huge point. We dont know. Well find out in a couple weeks." Landeskogs goal in overtime and 26th of the season -- extending his career high -- banked off defenceman Jack Johnson and behind Sergei Bobrovsky, who returned after missing nearly three games with the flu and finished with 25 saves. "It was as lucky as they come I guess," Landeskog said. Brad Maloone and Landeskog scored 5:17 apart in the third period to draw Colorado even.dddddddddddd "We were down 2-0 but it didnt feel like," Avalanche centre Paul Stastny said. "We thought wed get one goal and get back into it." Malone scored at 9:46 with his second of the season on a seemingly innocent play. He threw the puck from deep in the left corner that hit Nick Foligno near the crease and went into the net. Then Landeskog redirected a feed from smooth-skating MacKinnon that deflected off the Blue Jackets Dalton Prout. "For us as a team I think we are doing the little things and certainly finding ways to win," Landeskog said. The game was a bit of a track meet the first two periods and Columbus broke through first. It was a turnover by defenceman Nate Guenin behind his net that got Varlamov leaning the wrong way. Brandon Dubinsky sent a centring pass to Atkinson, who scored his 20th at 10:52. Colorado counterattacked after each goal, but Bobrovsky stopped MacKinnon from in tight. He later stretched to make a nice toe save on a hard Stastny shot with the Avalanche revving up the pressure in the Blue Jackets zone. "We did some good things," Richards said. "I thought we played a good game." Then later in the period on a quirky play, the Blue Jackets made it 2-0. A bouncing puck on a long clear by Fedor Tyutin hopped past two Colorado defencemen and was finally settled by Comeau. He worked a high-speed give and go in little space with Foligno to tuck home his fourth and first since Dec. 19. Notes: The overtime power play was the only one for the Avalanche in the game. ... Columbus played its first of eight games in 12 days to close out the regular season. ... Blue Jackets big off-season signing RW Nathan Horton, who has mostly struggled since returning from shoulder surgery in January, missed the game with lower-body injury. Columbus LW R.J. Umberger, who has 18 goals and 33 points, was scratched for the fourth time in seven games. ... Blue Jackets C Derek MacKenzie played in his 300th career game. ' ' '

MIAMI -- This time when the game ended, the only gesture from Jonathan Papelbon was a fist pump. Papelbon, pitching for the first time since he grabbed his crotch and received a seven-game suspension, earned his 38th save with a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to help the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 2-1. "Did it look like I had rust?" he said. "I didnt feel rust." The game was Papelbons first since he blew a save against the Marlins on Sept. 14 and lost his composure when he was booed coming off the field. He grabbed himself in response, and then bumped umpire Joe West. His resulting suspension ended Sunday. "It has been boring, it has been aggravating," Papelbon said. "I play the game because I want to get in there as many nights as I can. It has been rough. It has been bad. I just really had to try to put Joe West in the back of my mind and carry on, even though I feel like I got the raw end of the deal." Papelbon saved the game for Kyle Kendrick, who pitched perhaps his final game for Philadelphia. Kendrick (10-13) went seven innings, had three hits and drove in a run. Kendrick can become a free agent after the season but would prefer to remain with the Phillies. "After I was done in the seventh, I soaked it up a little bit and looked around," he said. "Ive been with these guys through a lot. It was a little emotional, Im not going to lie. I dont like change. If it happens, Ill deal with it." Using teammate Ryan Howards bat for the first time, Kendrick broke a scoreless tie with two outs in the seventh when he doubled home Darin Ruf. Kendrick also singled twice and hiked his average from .095 to .136. The right-hander allowed only one run despite giving up five extra-base hits. Papelbon pitched around a one-out double in the ninth, striking out Enrique Hernandez to end the game. On an 84-degree night, the retractable roof at Marlins Park was open for the first time since May 23. The sultry weather seemed to suit both starting pitchers. Miamis Brad Hand allowed one run in seven innings. Marlon Byrd put the Phillies ahead to stay when he hit a one-out RBI single in the eighth off Chris Hatcher (0-3). Since losing slugger NL home run leader Giancarlo Stanton to a season-ending facial injury, the Marlins have scored less than three runs in nine of 12 games. They have one home run in the past nine games. "Were having a tough time scoring," manager Mike Redmond said. "We had some guys in scoring position and couldnt get a couple of hits to score some runs. Thats the way its been going since we lost G." TRAINERS ROOM Phillies: SS Jimmy Rollins has not run all-out to test the sore left hamstring that has sidelined him since Sept. 8, and its uncertain whether hell play again this season. UP NEXT Marlins RHP Tom Koehler (9-10, 3.76) makes his seventh and final attempt at his 10th victory in the series finale Thursday afternoon against Phils rookie RHP David Buchanan (6-8, 3.77 ERA). In six starts since Aug. 17, Koehler is 0-1 despite a 3.50 ERA. LHP Andrew Heaney (0-3, 5.33), the Marlins top prospect, will pitch the second game of a doubleheader Friday at Washington. It will be Heaneys first start since July 5. PAPELBONS RETURN Papelbon said hes looking forward to pitching in Philadelphia this weekend even though he expects fans will jeer him. "I enjoy pitching there," he said. "I dont let the boos get to me. They dont bother me. I dont hear them. I like pitching in that kind of environment." Mike Montgomery Jersey . The defending champions from Ottawa scored an early three and hung on through some difficult ends before scoring one in the 10th for a 5-4 victory over Chelsea Careys Manitoba rink in the first-versus-second game on Friday night. "Pretty crazy," said Homan, whose team has won 12 straight matches. "Some really amazing shots by every one of my teammates and a few wed like back. "The ice caught us a couple of times, but we battled and stayed in it to the end." The Ottawa-based Homan squad, looking to defend the title won last year in Kingston, Ont., will play in the final on Sunday night at the Maurice Richard Arena. Carey will play in the semifinal against the winner of the third-versus-fourth game Saturday between Saskatchewans Stefanie Lawton and Albertas Val Sweeting. "We lost, but we played really well, so you come out and try to put the same game together and hope it goes better," said Carey. "Well try to win the semifinal and get back at them." Homan started with a bang, scoring three in the second end with a daring double takeout after Careys first stone drifted left and nicked a guard. "We like making big shots," said Homan. "They played amazing, but because we got up that three we could make mistakes and still win in the end." She threw another double in the fourth to force Carey to draw for one. But Carey responded with a clever takeout that led to a steal of one in the fifth. Then a perfect draw into a crowded house produced another steal to tie it at 3-3 in the sixth when Homans bid for a triple takeout couldnt dislodge the shot stone. Homan finally drew for one in the seventh and handed the hammer back to Carey, which she used to take one in the eighth. "Their team didnt miss," said Homan. "We were an inch (off) here and an inch there and they kept capitalizing on our mistakes. "We had to keep hanging in tough. We knew we had a lead and had control of the game and we had to keep that and make sure the mommentum didnt shift in her favour.dddddddddddd" After blanking the ninth, Homan watched Carey crash on a guard on her final stone to hand her the victory. Carey was trying to get a stone behind the guard, but said it "didnt really matter, the game was over regardless." Lead Lisa Weagle led Canada by shooting 96 per cent and was especially tough in the final two ends. The Canada team opened the Scotties with an 8-3 win over Manitoba and ended the round robin on Friday morning with an 11-0 record after a 7-3 win over New Brunswicks Andrea Crawford. Homans side outscored its opponents 94-43 in round robin play and went to a 10th end only once against Saskatchewan. After 12 matches, she has still not had to throw a last rock in a 10th end. The win gave her squad a day off to rest up for the final. Homan said they needed it after playing four times in two days. She said they would practice, relax and spend some time with family. A boisterous cheering section from Ottawa was among the crowd of 2,309. Carey was 9-2 after beating P.E.I.s Kim Dolan 6-4. Homans rink, which defeated Canadian Olympic team skip Jennifer Jones in last years final, is looking to become the first to go through the Scotties undefeated since Linda Moore in 1985. Lawton ended the round robin on a downer -- watching her last rock hit and roll just out of the rings to give Yukons Sarah Koltun a steal for a 6-5 win. "We didnt quite finish it off," said Lawton. "Just a bad shot by myself, otherwise we would have won. "In the end it doesnt make a difference for us. It would have been nice to finish that game off, but well rest up and get ready for the playoffs." Koltun was a crowd favourite all week and the 2,061 spectators gave her a long ovation after her upset win. The 20-year-old from Whitehorse is the first player ever to skip at the Canadian junior championships and the Scotties in the same year. "Its been really cool," said Koltun. "Its so much bigger. "You feel like superstars here, where at juniors youre just another team. The crowd loved us and we loved them. Its been incredible." ' ' '

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Free-agent right-hander Bartolo Colon and the Mets have reached a deal, giving the New York the starter it was seeking to replace injured ace Matt Harvey. The deal is pending the completion of a physical for the 18-game winner, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The two-year, $20 million agreement came Wednesday at the winter meetings and increased the Mets spending on free agents to more than $87 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an agreement had not yet been completed. Out of baseball in 2010 because of injuries, the 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner revived his career with New York and Oakland over the past three years. Even though he will be 41 in May, Colon went 18-6 last year with a 2.65 ERA for the Athletics in a season he began by completing a 50-game suspension for a positive testosterone test. He struck out 117 and walked only 29 in 190 1-3 innings. Colon won just 14 games in four seasons after winning the Cy Young with the Angels. But since 2011, hes 36-25 with a 3.32 ERA and he earned his third All-Star selection in 2013. General manager Sandy Alderson had said he preferred not to go for more than a one-year contract for a pitcher because New York had several prospects close to being ready. But after several years of budget cutting and meagre spending, the Mets have displayed some fiscal flexibility. Colons deal comes soon after the Mets finalized a $60 million free-agent contract with outfielder Curtis Granderson, securing the former Yankees outfielder by being the only team to go to a fourth year. They also gave outfielder Chris Young a $7.25 million, one-year contract this off-season. Colon will join a rotation that includes right-handers Zack Wheeler and Dillon Gee and left-hander Jon Niese. New York is still looking for a fifth starter. Oft-injured Mets righty Jenrry Mejia could be an option. Harvey had elbow reconstruction surgery and is going to miss the 2014 season. METAIRIE, La. -- Saints coach Sean Payton says newly acquired safety Jairus Byrd has undergone surgery to address a nagging problem with a disc in his back and is expected to be fully recovered by the start of training camp. The procedure is preventing Byrd from participating in voluntary off-season practices, which were opened to media for the first time on Thursday. Payton says the procedure wasnt necessary and that Byrd could have played with his condition, but that the club and player both agreed that taking care of it now "would prevent any issues in the fall." Byrd, signed as a free agent this off-season, has gone to three Pro Bowls in his five NFL seasons, all with Buffalo. He has 22 interceptions, 11 forced fumbles and three sacks in his career. TORONTO - What a difference three days made for the Toronto Maple Leafs. In the Winter Classic they played in front of 105,491 fans, many of whom drove several hours to Michigan Stadium to watch the spectacle amid frigid temperatures. Saturday night against the New York Rangers they were booed off the ice multiple times in an embarrassing 7-1 loss at Air Canada Centre that snapped the Leafs winning streak at three. "Getting booed off the ice in the first period, second period and the end of the game — and we deserved it," winger Joffrey Lupul said. "We were not good in any aspect. We dont feel very good about ourselves right now." There wasnt much to feel good about as the Leafs (21-17-5) experienced the worst kind of let-down from the high of the Winter Classic. Goaltender Jonathan Bernier, who had been stellar lately, was pulled for the first time all season, David Clarkson and Carl Gunnarsson left with injuries and everything fell apart at the seams. "Sometimes you have losses where you take some positives out of: some guys played well, you did certain things well, you didnt do other things well," said Lupul, who had Torontos only goal. "Tonight we did nothing well. Theres not much we can take out of this other than just not wanting to have this feeling in here again." The feeling of the loss led to the home locker-room being closed to the media much longer than usual. Coach Randy Carlyle called his teams lack of a push-back the "most disappointing thing" as goals piled up from Carl Hagelin, Dominic Moore (two), Benoit Pouliot, Chris Kreider, Brad Richards and Brian Byle. He shared the same sentiment with players. "My message was it was unacceptable to play and to feel that we were not embarrassed by what our performance was," Carlyle said. "And I stressed we." There was plenty of soul-searching after the Leafs most lopsided loss of the season, and as Lupul pointed out, plenty of blame to go around. Bernier, who had stopped 181-of-190 shots since relieving James Reimer on Dec. 21 against the Detroit Red Wings, gave up five goals on 32 shots to the Rangers before getting yanked for the first time this season. Moores first goal from a bad angle, which made it 2-0, was the softest he has allowed in a long time. Still, this one couldnt be pinned on Bernier, or even Reimer, who didnt fare much better in allowing two goals on 18 shots. "They had the freedom to roam about the ice and do what they wanted to do, and we didnt engage in the competitive side of it of limiting their space, stepping in front of anybody, skating in front of anybody to impede the progress," Carlyle said. "Obviously we left our goalies hanging high and dry." With the Leafs rarely in control of the puck and players being a step slow at times, the Rangers (21-20-2) pounced. They scored at least six goals for the first time this season and could have had as many as nine if Rick Nash finished on an empty net early and a late goal by Pouliot wasnt called back for Boyle interfering with Reimer. It was a real bounce-back effort for New York after losing 5-2 at the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night. "I know the guys were ready last night and turned the page on it, analyzed it, we got ready, the guys came out, moved the puck well, got some good opportunities and we were able to finish a couple," coach Alain Vigneault said. It stuck out that the Leafs couldnt keep pace with the Rangers, who travelled and were playing the second half of back-to-back games. "Its always disappointing when you give up seven goals, and especially they played last night," Bernier said. "They were just quicker and faster than us." All night the Leafs had no answers for what the Rangers were doing in the offensive zone. Defenceman Cody Franson, who was burned a couple of times on plays that led to goals, knew he and his teammates were on their heels from the get-go. "We got outworked, to put it mildly," Franson said. The Leafs certainly didnt do enough work to put pressure on Rangers backup goaltender Cam Talbot, who stopped 25 of the 26 shots thrown on net. It was another steady outing from the rookie, who improved to 9-3-0 with a 1.66 goals-against average and .938 save percentage. "Ive always just kind of started as a backup and then started playing more games, so Ive been in these situations before and you learn from every situation youre in," Talbot said. Theres not much the Leafs can learn from this one. They lost Clarkson to a left foot injury after he got hit with a shot from Rangers defenceman Michael Del Zotto and Gunnarsson to an upper-body injury following a hit from Hagelin. "No offence to those guys, but I dont know if they wouldve been helping tonight," Lupul said. "You never like to see guys go down, and those are two veteran guys and were hoping theyre all right. ... Thats certainly not an excuse for how we played tonight." Getting beaten so handily right after the Winter Classic was a ready-made excuse, even though Lupul and Carlyle noted that the Leafs were relieved to be done with the hype that came with the game and HBOs "24/7." Carlyle ended his post-game news conference blowing off any excuses. "I just look at tonight, you could go forwards, defence, you could go to our whole group, and we didnt have the competitive edge thats required to have success," he said. "Everything that I say is going to be an excuse, so Im not here to make an excuse for anybody." With answers lacking and excuses thrown out, Lupul passed along to reporters what was said in the locker-room afterward. It wasnt pretty. "Were not proud of that game, its embarrassing," he said. "I apologize to people who paid money to see us play like that. Its one game and were going to feel pretty bad about this tonight and then hopefully tomorrow come back and practise and get some life and try to turn the page on it." After so much notable progress in recent games, the Leafs were outshot 50-26. The loss stunted any momentum they had been building. "We felt that we were becoming more competitive," Carlyle said. "And this one kind of sent an A-bomb." NOTES — Newly acquired defenceman Tim Gleason was a healthy scratch as Carlyle stuck with the same lineup from the Winter Classic. Gleason took warm-ups, but Carlyle announced Saturday morning that the former Carolina Hurricanes blue-liner would not play unless there was a late injury or illness. ... Talbot got the start after Henrik Lundqvist played Friday night in Pittsburgh and allowed five goals in a loss to the Penguins. Cheap NFL Jerseys China .
