TORONTO – There may come a time in the next few years when the Houston Astros are a good baseball team. That time, however, is not now and with apologies to the "Its Early" crowd, with whom we typically should all agree hardly removed from opening day, this three-game home set with the Houston Astros is important to the Blue Jays. Nobody is suggesting that, say, if Toronto gets swept its season is over. But a check of the math tells you it doesnt help. The Blue Jays, by virtue of their perch in the American League East, have the unenviable task of playing 76 of their 162 games against their four divisional opponents. They get the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles 19 times each, a veritable meat grinder that can chew up and spit out the hope for a successful season all by itself. Lets say, for the sake of argument, the Blue Jays go 38-38 against their own division. That leaves 86 games against non-divisional opponents. To get to 90 wins, which likely wont be enough to win the division and may or may not be enough to capture one of the two wild card spots, Toronto would have to go 52-34. So far, after splitting a four-game series in Tampa Bay and disappointingly dropping two of three at home to the Yankees, the Jays are 3-4 within the AL East. Houston marks the first non-divisional opponent and due to the make up of the schedule, this is the only time the Astros will visit Toronto all year. It doesnt matter whether its April, June, or the intensity filled months of August and September, Houstons only here once and when they visit the Jays need to make hay. More than anything, manager John Gibbons wants his club to better protect home soil. "Ive always said you cant bury yourself early," said Gibbons. "Especially in this division, its an uphill battle and its real tough to come back. Were trying to get off to a good start and with more games at home itd be nice to finish up good at home. Youve got to play good at home, its no secret. Hold your own on the road and play good baseball at home." JEKYLL AND HYDE ROTATION The biggest question facing the Blue Jays (3-4) heading into the season centred on the starting rotation. Could it hold up in the toughest division in baseball? In the wins, Dr. Jekyll rules the day. When Torontos lost, Mr. Hyde rears his ugly face. Heres a look at the numbers through the first seven games: In the three wins, no runs allowed in 20 2/3 innings pitched. April 1: Drew Hutchison, 5.1 innings pitched.April 2: Mark Buehrle, 8.2 IP.April 5: R.A. Dickey, 6.2 IP. In the four losses, the starts have allowed a staggering 20 earned runs in just 16 innings pitched (11.25 ERA, averaging four innings pitched per start): March 31: R.A. Dickey, 6 earned runs in 5 innings pitched.April 3: Brandon Morrow, 4 ER in 5 IP.April 4: Dustin McGowan, 4 ER in 2.2 IP.April 6: Drew Hutchison, 6 ER in 3.1 IP. ROTATION JUGGLING Mondays off day has afforded manager John Gibbons the opportunity to flip R.A. Dickey and Dustin McGowan, meaning Dickey will start Thursdays series finale against the Astros and McGowan will open a three-game set in Baltimore on Friday night. "Thatll split up Morrow and McGowan," said Gibbons. "The two guys were watching a little bit. Put Dickey in the middle and he can eat some innings, anyway." Dickey has repeatedly said he prefers pitching under a roof, although Gibbons denied the forecasted cool conditions outdoors in Baltimore factored in to the decision. REYES UPDATE Jose Reyes, eligible to come off the disabled list from a strained left hamstring on April 16, ran the treadmill and took ground balls during batting practice on Tuesday afternoon. "Ill know better when I start running and see how Im feeling," said Reyes. "For now, Ill just take it day by day and see what happens." Reyes has been hitting to maintain his batting stroke but still has yet to run at full speed. When Reyes is ready to play, he expects to appear in at least a couple of minor league rehab games before returning to the Blue Jays. JANSSEN UPDATE Casey Janssen, out with an abdominal/back strain, doesnt think hell be ready to come off the disabled list when hes eligible on Sunday. "Probably not," said Janssen. "I dont know the exact date but Ive got to get on a rehab somewhere; hopefully shortly thereafter." Janssen expects only to need one or two minor league rehab games before hes back with the Blue Jays. If he continues to progress, its not unreasonable to expect Janssen to return mid-to-late next week. Yeezy Shoes Wholesale . LOUIS -- The St.SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- DeMarcus Cousins had 25 points and 16 rebounds to help the Sacramento Kings snap a seven-game losing streak by defeating the Chicago Bulls 99-70 on Monday night. Cousins came out aggressive, getting 11 points and seven rebounds in the first quarter when the Kings led 24-12 and never trailed the remainder of the game. Jimmy Butler had 17 points for the frustrated Bulls, who have lost two straight and three of four. Tony Snell and Taj Gibson each had 11 points. Chicago was outscored 28-13 in the fourth quarter. Chicago All-Star centre Joakim Noah had four points and four rebounds before being ejected in the third quarter when he picked up two technical fouls in less than three minutes. The second technical came after Noah was called for a foul against Cousins at the 7:40 mark. Isaiah Thomas had 19 points for the Kings, who stretched the lead to 20 points four minutes into the fourth quarter. Rudy Gay had 14 points and Jimmer Fredette had all of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. Chicago shot 28 per cent and was outrebounded 53-30 in losing back-to-back games for the first time since mid-December. The point total was a season-low for a Kings opponent. Fredette made jumper and Ben&nbssp;McLemore followed with a basket, giving Sacramento an 84-62 lead at the 7:15 mark of the fourth quarter.dddddddddddd Before Monday mornings shootaround, Bulls power forward Carlos Boozer talked with the media regarding his displeasure with coach Tom Thibodeaus tendency not to play him in the fourth quarter, when the minutes typically go to Gibson. Boozer had four points in 21 minutes Saturday in a loss to New Orleans. Against the Kings, Boozer had eight points and nine rebounds in 35 minutes, including seven in the fourth quarter. Cousins was dominant in the low block, scoring 12 points in the third quarter when Sacramento built its lead to 71-57. The physical play continued in the quarter, where three technicals were called and every foul seemed to be followed by complaints. Thomas scored 15 first-half points for the Kings, who led 44-33. The Bulls shot 24 per cent in the opening half and trailed 24-12 after one quarter. The 12 points was the second fewest this season by a Kings opponent. Notes: Quincy Acy made a 3 to end the first quarter, his first 3-pointer in 27 games with the Kings. Acy, who came to the Kings in a trade this season with Toronto, had two 3s with the Raptors. ... Cousins got called for his 12th technical of the season in the third quarter. ... The Bulls made 22 of 34 free throws (64.7 per cent) ' ' '

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Teemu Selanne took one last tour of the Anaheim rink after the final horn, waving his stick at cheering fans while players from both teams banged their sticks on the ice. Despite the melancholy look on his face, the Finnish Flash said he has no regrets about returning to the Anaheim Ducks for one last season, even after they fell well short of another Stanley Cup title. Selannes 21-season NHL career likely ended Thursday night with a 6-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings in Game 7 of their second-round series. The 43-year-old forward has maintained hell retire this summer, keeping to his plan even after starring in his sixth Olympics and playing a significant role during the best regular season in franchise history in Anaheim, his home for parts of 15 seasons. "Ive been flirting with this decision for a long time, but the passion and the fun always brought me back," said Selanne, who didnt score in the finale. "I still love this game, and I still know I can play, but it is better this way than having different situations, and thats why I think it is the right time." The crowd chanted "Lets Go Teemu" in the final minutes, with even Kings fans joining in. After the final horn, Selanne accepted congratulations and eventually made it to the dressing room, where his famed composure slipped. "I tried, but when I came in here, I couldnt hold myself anymore," Selanne said. "I didnt know what to do out there." Selanne kept returning to the Ducks for seven straight years after he first contemplated retirement following their only Stanley Cup championship in 2007, each time hoping the Ducks would make another title run. He kept moving up the NHLs career scoring chart, currently sitting 15th with 1,457 points and 11th with 684 goals. Selannes ice time with the Ducks dwindled this year while coach Bruce Boudreau worked younger players into key roles. He still played a dependable role in Anaheim, bottling his frustration for one more run at a Cup. "The 2007 Stanley Cup has to be the biggest crown for my career," Selanne said. "To be honest, the most proud I am is I have been able to play so many years and at this age. You all know when you get older, its not going to get any easier. But to be able to compete against these young guys and still enjoy this and play well, that has been the greatest thing in my career. Im really thankful for that." Selanne has a full life in Southern California waiting for him after retirement. He opened a successful steak house in Laguna Beach last year, and his four children are comfortable in their year-round home in Coto De Caza, an Orange County community on Selannes beloved golf course. Yet in classic Selanne fashion, he didnt slam the door completely shut on the possibility he could play elsewhere next season. Speculation has been rampant in Finland and Russia about the possibility of luring Selanne to Jokerit, the Helsinki-based club thats joining the Kontinental Hockey League in the fall. "I dont know, and I dont think so," Selanne said a potential move to Jokerit. "I know there is a lot of interest for that, but I always said I was going to retire here. To be honest, I really dont have to play anywhere anymore. I could if I want, but right now I dont want to." Selanne began his pro career with three years in Jokerits junior development program, and he played three seasons with the big-league club before joining the Winnipeg Jets for his record-setting NHL rookie year in 1992-93. The game also might have been a finale for Saku Koivu, Selannes fellow Finn and longtime friend. The 39-year-old Koivu was the Montreal Canadiens captain before moving to Anaheim five years ago. "I really dont have an answer for you," Koivu said. "Usually after the season, the last three or four years, Ive been signing one-year contracts. And Im going to go the same road, just to get away from the game for a couple of weeks and really take a good careful look at what happened, how the season went, and if there is enough left to come back and push for another year." Coco Crisp hit an RBI single and stole his 16th base and Nick Punto doubled in a run during a four-run third against Madison Bumgarner (9-7), handed his second three-start skid of the year. The lefty didnt allow a hit until Jed Lowries blooper leading off the third that landed in front of a charging right fielder Hunter Pence, who avoided a collision with second baseman Joe Panik. Oakland did all its damage that inning on the way to matching its season-high winning streak. The As (57-33) concluded their homestand 6-0, just the 11th undefeated homestand of six or more games in Oakland history. The low-budget club with baseballs best record has won 11 of its past 12 games at the Coliseum. Gray (9-3) reached eight or more strikeouts for the fourth time in seven impressive innings, having struck out nine twice. He is on a nice roll after losing back-to-back starts to the Orioles and Yankees on June 7 and 13. It was an impressive first start against the Giants for the right-hander in his first full big league season. He showed his poise on the big stage facing the Tigers twice in last falls five-game AL division series loss. The As have outscored the Giants 11-1 in the first two games of the Bay Bridge Series following a 5-0 win Monday. The interleague series now shifts across San Francisco Bay to AT&T Park for two. San Francisco avoided being shut out in consecutive games for the first time since July 28-29, 2012, against the Dodgers at AT&T Park. Yet the Giannts lost for the 11th time in their past 13 games at Oakland dating to the 2010 season when they went on to win the World Series.dddddddddddd Pablo Sandoval returned to the Giants lineup for the first time since leaving Saturdays game at San Diego in the first inning with a bruised left elbow. Giants manager Bruce Bochy requested a review of a close play at first in which Sandoval was called out trying to beat out a fourth-inning grounder. The call was upheld after a replay review of 1 minute, 28 seconds. Bochy came out again in the eighth to argue after reliever Jean Machi was called for a balk. Machi was then ejected by plate umpire Angel Hernandez as the reliever walked off the field at the end of the inning. As starters have thrown six or more innings while allowing one or fewer runs in six straight games, their longest streak since at least 1914. NOTES: As RF Josh Reddick is making progress toward a rehab assignment as he recovers from a strained right knee and his second DL stint. He could play in minor league games as soon as this weekend and during the All-Star break. Reddick has shagged fly balls and thrown without issue the past two days, wearing a bulky brace he expects he will need the rest of the year. ... Oakland manager Bob Melvin presented Oaklands seven All-Stars — including then-NL All-Star Jeff Samardjiza — with red jerseys before the game. ... Giants 2B Marco Scutaro, who hasnt played this year because of a lower back strain, went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and a run scored for Triple-A Fresno. Bochy expects him to soon play nine innings in a rehab game. "Were seeing the light at the end of the tunnel," Bochy said. ' ' '

CARDIFF -- The Springboks handed tighthead prop Frans Malherbe a test debut and recalled veteran backs Jaque Fourie and JP Pietersen for the tour opener against Six Nations champion Wales at Millennium Stadium on Saturday. The 22-year-old Malherbe, from Western Province, replaced Jannie du Plessis, who didnt make the tour because of a chronic shoulder injury and broken hand. Another uncapped player, Sharks lock Pieter-Steph du Toit, was in the reserves. He would have played earlier this season if he hadnt injured his sternum, coach Heyneke Meyer said on Wednesday. There are five changes from the starters who lost an epic match to the All Blacks at Ellis Park on Oct. 5. The centre Fourie last appeared for South Africa at the 2011 World Cup, while Pietersen hasnt been available all year until now. The only other change in the forwards has Flip van der Merwe locking with Eben Etzebeth. "Frans has big boots to fill, but hes been with us for most of 2012 and shown good form since recovering from injury recently, and we dont have any doubts that he has what it takes to make the step up," Meyer said. "Hell have two players with more than 50 test caps each next to him in the scrum (Bismarck du Plessis and Tendai Mtawarira), and his general workrate across the field and on defence is very good. Im very happy for Frans." The inclusion of Fourie and Pietersen means all but fullback Pat Lambie, in for Zane Kirchner, in the backline have at least 40 caps. "Were very fortunate to have two world-class players in JP and Jaque and I wanted to get then into the action as soon as possible," Meyer said. "It was clear from our training sessions thus far that they are in great form and ready for test rugby." ------ South Africa: Pat Lambie, JP Pietersen, Jaque Fourie, Jean de Villiers (captain), Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez; Duane Vermeulen, Willem Alberts, Francois Louw, Flip van der Merwe, Eben Etzebeth, Frans Malberhe, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira. Reserves: Adriaan Strauss, Gurthro Steenkamp, Coenie Oosthuizen, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi, Ruan Pienaar, JJ Engelbrecht, Willie le Roux. Eric Thames Jersey . Jonathan Crompton led the team to a 40-9 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Crompton threw three touchdown passes - two to Duron Carter and one to Brandon London - and Sean Whyte connected on four field goals to power the Alouettes to the win. He made that dream a reality Wednesday night. Olt, who grew up in Branford, Connecticut, attended UConn and made a nearly 2 1-2 hour trek to Boston a handful of times to watch the Red Sox, belted a two-run homer, one of four hit by Cubs in a 16-9 rout that completed a three-game interleague series sweep. Jeremy Jeffress Jersey . "Right now were kind of looking at him at the end of the rotation right now," said pitching coach Pete Walker. "Not indicative of how hes doing or how hes feeling. Its just, it seems like the spot we want him right now. Jonathan Villar Jersey . Mired in an offensive slump, Lowry - the NBAs leader in taking charges this season - did what he has learned to do best, standing his ground and drawing a crucial offensive foul on the Cavaliers all-star point guard. Fast forward 30 seconds to the Cavs next possession, with the home team still trailing by three, Spencer Hawes - one of the leagues best passing big men - threw an interception, intended for Tyler Zeller and picked off by DeMar DeRozan.TORONTO -- Tanner Marsh didnt need any late-game heroics to win his first CFL start. The rookie quarterback threw for 309 yards and a touchdown to lead the Montreal Alouettes past the Toronto Argonauts 20-9 on Tuesday night. Marsh did a solid job of managing the game, surrendering just one interception after throwing four and losing two fumbles coming off the bench last week to rally the Als past B.C. 39-38. Marsh received plenty of help Tuesday night from a Montreal defence that held Toronto (5-4) to just one point from two impressive early drives, then forced four turnovers, including linebacker Shea Emrys 38-yard first-half fumble return for a TD. "When youre a young quarterback trying to get into a groove and you see your defence make huge stops, that gives you a lot of confidence," Marsh said. "Our defence did nothing but that, they did a great job, an amazing job. "I have to get hit a few times in order to get into and I got hit and I was into it, I just got into a groove. Its an awesome feeling winning your first start. Its a great start to a career." Marshs 57-yard completion to Eric Deslauriers set up Sean Whytes game-winning 15-yard field goal against B.C. The 23-year-old Texan finished 18-of-27 passing versus Toronto and got the better of Argos sophomore Zach Collaros before a Rogers Centre gathering of 18,863 consisting mostly of enthusiastic university students. They witnessed a contest that felt more like a pre-season game given the seven combined turnovers, 19 penalties and 18 punts. But Marshs calm demeanour impressed Alouettes veteran receiver S.J. Green, who had eight catches for 143 yards, both game highs. "Tanner came out very poised and took control of the game," he said. "He made the plays and kept us moving. "We already believed in him and its great how he showed up and played well." Montreal interim coach Jim Popp said Marshs biggest attribute is his ability to always look downfield. "He keeps his eyes upfield, thats the biggest thing and he gives us a chance," Popp said. "He gives us a chance to make plays." Collaros, Torontos starter with incumbent Ricky Ray (shoulder) out six weeks, was 21-of-32 passing for 261 yards with a TD but threw an interception and had a costly fumble. The former Cincinnati star was hurt at 9:59 of the second when taken down by an illegal Chip Cox horse-collar tackle. He was replaced briefly by Trevor Harris but returned on Torontos next possession. Montreal (4-5) doesnt have time to enjoy the win. The Alouettes host Toronto on Sunday to complete the home-and-home series. Montreal is tied with Hamilton (4-5) for second in the East Division after improving to 2-0 with veteran Anthony Calvillo (concussion) sidelined. The Argos certainly had their chances. Their best opportunity to get back into the game came late in the third when Dontrelle Inmans 10-yard catch put them at the Montreal 13-yard line. But Popp successfully challenged the play, correctly contending Inman fumbled and Alouette Byron Parker recovered. Marsh then hit Duron Carter -- the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter -- on a 477-yard completion to end the third to set up Sean Whytes 14-yard field goal at 1:50 of the fourth for a 20-8 advantage.dddddddddddd "That (challenge) was a big play because had they scored it wouldve been a different game," Popp said. "Im just glad we were able to get the ball and move it up the field." Toronto also opened the game with two impressive drives but only managed Noel Prefontaines single off a missed 30-yard field goal at 2:39 of the first. Prefontaine set up for a 30-yard boot on the Argos second drive but holder Harris bobbled the snap and was held short of the first down, giving Montreal possession at its own three-yard line. Collaros hit John Chiles on a 34-yard TD pass at 10:01 of the first to put Toronto ahead 8-0 but Argos head coach Scott Milanovich said the missed early chances were big. "I felt like we couldve had a much larger lead there late in the first quarter," he said. "We didnt and thats part of football games and weve got to be able to continue play. "But I felt we left some opportunities out there." Predictably, Milanovich didnt pin the loss on Collaros. "Its never all on one guy," he said. "You cant turn the ball over as many times as we did and have the penalties. "We started off decently, we werent able to finish drives. We got into a little bit of a funk and werent able to get out of it." Montreal tied the season series 1-1 as the Argonauts won the first meeting 39-13 on Aug. 8. The two teams play their regular-season finale Nov. 1 at Rogers Centre. Prefontaine booted the convert and two singles. Arland Bruce III scored Montreals other touchdown. Whyte kicked two field goals and two converts. Emrys 37-yard return of a Collaros fumble and Marshs 28-yard TD strike to Bruce in the second quarter staked the Alouettes to an unlikely 17-8 lead in a sloppy opening half of missed opportunities. Emry scored at 13:31 less than five minutes after Bruce gave Montreal its first lead of the game. "He just wants to be that guy," Bruce said of Marsh. "You can see that in the classroom, you can see that at practice. "He doesnt get flustered. If he doesnt make a play, hell stand up as a man and say, Hey, thats my fault guys, Ill get better, and thats what you want from a quarterback. I think hes going to get better." NOTES -- Astronaut Chris Hadfield performed the ceremonial opening kickoff . . . Bruces first-half TD catch was the 90th of his CFL career, making him just the sixth player to reach that lofty plateau . . . Torontos next four games are on the road. The Argos return to Rogers Centre on Oct. 4 to host Hamilton . . . . Between them, Calvillo and Ray have a combined 446 CFL starts (277 for Calvillo, 169 for Ray). Theyve also won three Grey Cups apiece . . . Cox came in leading the CFL in tackles with 62, nine ahead of Torontos Robert McCune, who was in second . . . Montreal linebacker Kyries Hebert, the clubs second-leading tackler who was tied for fifth overall with 42, was one of the four players scratched from the contest . . . Ottawa Redblack GM Marcel Desjardins was in attendance. ' ' '

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - LeVeon Bell spent four months helping the Pittsburgh Steelers return to the top of the AFC North and four painful quarters watching helplessly as it all came undone.Sure, there were pangs of what if for the second-year running back and team MVP as the season came to a decisive end with a 30-17 loss to Baltimore in the wild-card round last Saturday. Yet while Bell believes his hyperextended right knee would have been good enough to go this weekend if the Steelers had advanced, hell have to settle for a trip to the Pro Bowl and the growing confidence that deeper playoff runs are coming for a team in the midst of an identity shift. For the longest, the Steelers have only been known for defence, Bell said. This is the first year really the offence has really talked about being a dynamic offence and having playmakers all over the field. We love that. Were definitely going to get better. On paper and on the field. Bell set a franchise record for yards from scrimmage, wide receiver Antonio Brown put together the second-highest single-season reception total in NFL history (129) and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger tied Drew Brees for the league lead in yards passing. Pittsburgh finished as the NFLs second-ranked offence and smashed the team mark for points in a season.Yet out of all those gaudy numbers, the most important ones might be their ages.Bell is 22. Brown is 26. Rookie Martavis Bryant — who caught nine touchdown passes in 11 games — is 23. All five starters on the offensive line are in their 20s. And while Roethlisberger turns 33 in March, he shows no signs of slowing down. The skys the limit, Bryant said when asked about his potential. He might as well have been talking about the other guys in the huddle too.The sometimes gaudy production came after two painful seasons of restructuring as the offence adjusted to Todd Haleys diverse scheme, Brown developed into one of the NFLs best players and Bell morphed from raw rookie into one of the most versatile weapons in the league. Finding the right chemistry took time and patience. Its a process the Steelers now find themselves making on the other side of the ball. The transition will likely finally begin in earnest during the off-season. Defensive end Brett Keisels torn triceps likely means his career is over. Cornerback Ike Taylor will be 35 in May and missed most of the year with forearm and shoulder injuries. Safety Troy Polamalu was slowed by knee issues over the second half of the season and is hardly talking like a guy who plans on spending a 13th fall playing his own unique brand of football.Time will tell, Polamalu said when asked whether hes going to return.Oddly, perhaps the most likely candidate to return next season is somebody who began 2014 retired. Linebacker James Harrison needed a solid month to get into shape after re-signing with the Steelers in mid-September but at times looked every bit like the player who was among the NFLs most feared defenders in his prime. The 36-year-old finished third on the team with 5.5 sacks despite playing in just 10 games.Harrison stressed when he initially came back this would be his last ride. Now he doesnt sound so sure. The first few weeks it was a feeling of my body couldnt take this, it couldnt handle this, Harrison said. Over the course first 3-4 weeks, my body adjusted, started to feel a lot better. ... I dont feel nowhere near (as badly as) I thought I would feel.Whether Harrison dons his No. 92 jersey again, however, the torch is all but officially passed. For Pittsburgh to return to the leagues elite, the defence doesnt need to be dominant, though it wouldnt hurt. Either way, it is time for the likes of linebackers Jarvis Jones, Sean Spence, Ryan Shazier and safety Shamarko Thomas — all 25 or under, all expected to be leaders of the next wave — to begin the process of building a legacy of their own.I think a lot of younger guys took a lot of big steps this year, defensive end Cam Heyward said. Two shadows grew large around him. One came with a great following, making people feel good about their team and their city. The other helped bring big names to the club, occupying a position that had been vacated far too often in years past. Each spoke a lot about the clubs direction and it was easy to think they were the men in charge of rescuing a moribund franchise. Yet in the background sat Tim Bezbatchenko, observing everything. As the season wore on the whispers in the halls of BMO Field grew louder and louder. Just who was in charge of this club? Tim Leiweke had done his job. The outgoing President & CEO of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment had treated Toronto FC the same way as the Toronto Raptors and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was the conductor of an orchestra that had never been heard in Toronto the moment he preached why cant we be great? on the day the club introduced Jermain Defoe and Michael Bradley. And then there was Ryan Nelsen. It appeared the head coach, for this year anyway, was playing with house money, given a team that surely couldnt fail on its promise of making the playoffs for the first time. He had been given players past club coaches would have dreamed to work with, but with that came higher expectations. None more so than inside the dressing room. "Michael will keep me on my toes," said Nelsen about the American midfielder when he joined from Roma. How true it was. Sure, as he reminded us in his final press conference on Saturday, Nelsen had a fine playing career but in his first ever head coaching job he now had to prove to senior members of the team that he could make them collectively better. It proved to be a hurdle too high for Nelsen and the assistants he chose to surround himself with. Bezbatchenko and new coach Greg Vanney regularly used words like tempo and speed when wanting to improve the team and it was clear that Nelsens side werent able to dictate games, despite the talent he had available, instead resorting to sitting deeper and morphing themselves into a counter-attacking side, even at home. At the beginning of July when Toronto hosted DC United, Nelsen decided to go away from his rigid 4-4-2. Back from the World Cup, Bradley went into the side, in a midfield three, and for the first 45 minutes both sides played a highly entertaining, advanced, technical style, matching up in midfield in a half that was a superb advertisement for how far the league has come. Then at the start of the second half Nelsen removed Bradley Orr from midfield, went back to 4-4-2, allowed DC to run the game in midfield and go on and win it 2-1. More whispers. Three wins from their next eight, heading into Saturdays game against New England, and it became clear wed soon find out who was in charge. On Friday, Tim Bezbatchenko stepped out of the shadows by publicly demanding more from the team. If he wanted to set Nelsen up he had done it perfectly. Post match on Saturday, after a dismal performance against New England at home, the coach fired back but by then he was already out of a job. As Nelsen told the press about his playing resume, Bezbatchenko had seen enough and was behind closed doors putting the plan in place that culminated with the Kiwi being notified Sunday morning of his departure. And yet still no news broke until an official press release was emailed to the media after noon. By then the players were in a team meeting being told of what had happened. In past eras of this young club such a story would have been leaked the moment Saturdays game was over. That is a credit to Bezbatchenko and the staff remaining at the club. The 32-year-old could do nothing, however, about the leaks swirling around Jermain Defoe. Nevertheless the timing of Nelsens firing allowed him to be in control and at the forefront of the story. It also, for a crucial 24-hour period, led many to assume Defoe was unhappy because of the sacking of his former Tottenham teammate. That, as revealed by Bezbatchenko in a conference call on Monday, was not the truth. "We have a committed player. He was frustrated with the course of our team, no doubt. That was one of the reasons we made the (Nelsen) change," confirmed the GM about the English striker. Defoes commitment to the club remains a large question. He is in England at the moment and according to Tony Fernandes and Harry Redknapp, owner and manager of QPR, wants to come home. Bezbatchenko hinted as much in Sundays press conference. He said: "If you are not 100% committed to what we are doing, then we need to sit down and talk and that goes for everyone." The transfer window closed on Monday with Defoe as a Toronto FC player. For now. Bezbatchenko confirmed he is recovering from symptoms of a sports hernia and a decision in the next couple of weeks will have to be made if he needs surgery, which will likely keep him out of the majority of the regular season. It is the third time this season that Defoe has missed extensive time through injury. This winter he will be a 32-year-old injury prone forward. A player, when fit, who is dynamic and a true difference maker at this level. That is something the club can accept if he wants to still play for them. A 32-year-old injury prone unhappy striker, however, is a completely different situation. "You cant let history dictate what the appropriate decision is to make." Those were Bezbatchenkos carefully selected words in response to why now was the time Nelsen had to leave as head coach. Vanney becomes the ninth full time boss in nine years. They could also ring true with the Defoe situation. It is easy to blame the club for Defoes lack of commitment, based on their history, but this is an Englishman who is still wanted by multiple Premier League clubs. I know personally how difficult it can be to adapt to a new country and Defoe will not be the first man from the United Kingdom to commit to living in Canada, only to go home within a year. Defoe is a Londoner, who loves football and left behind his mates to start a new adventure when he wasnt playing in the Premier League. The Premier League, fresh with even more cash than it has ever had before, is calling again. Defoe, back home with his beloved Sky Sports on television, will have seen a striker like Shane Long go for 12 million pounds and wonder about himself. Premier League clubs are searching the globe for a striker who can score 12-15 per season and keep them from relegation and in Defoe they see a proven commodity at that level, not a gamble from elsewhere. A record bid for his services means he can go back to England and get more money than he got when he was at Tottenham so his head is bound to turn even if he was happy in North America. That is not what Toronto FC fans want to hear but it is reality and it is hard to imagine Defoe not wanting this no matter what MLS club he played for. Bezbatchenko eventually turned down the offer from QPR but he knows they will be back. QPR, or another Premier League club, will be just as desperate for Defoe in January, when TFC will have more time to use the money to improve their squad. Now was not the time to sell their talisman, injured or not. Just imagine whose job would be on the line if he had allowed Defoe to leave today and the club go on to miss the playoffs. Far too many false dawns have descended on this club and winds of caution are once again blowing around BMO Field as another new era sets on Toronto FC but given the cards he was dealt it is easy to be impressed with Bezbatchenkos work over the last four days. He was not dealt easy cards but he has played them very well in his first true test at the top table. BOSTON -- The regular season wasnt much of a struggle for the Boston Bruins, and neither was their first-round playoff series against the Detroit Red Wings. Tuukka Rask made 31 saves Saturday, and the defending Eastern Conference champions eliminated the Red Wings with a 4-2 victory in Game 5. After finishing the regular season with the best record in the NHL, the Bruins advanced to the conference semifinals against the Montreal Canadiens. "That series was much tougher than maybe the results showed," said Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, who gave Boston the lead for good with 4 seconds left in the second period. "I think that we handled it well, we came into this series ready and we got the job done." Loui Eriksson opened the scoring for Boston, and Charas goal on a 4-on-3 advantage snapped a 1-1 tie. Milan Lucic also scored, and Jarome Iginla added an empty-netter. Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored and Jonas Gustavsson stopped 29 shots for Detroit. The Red Wings scored only six goals in the five-game series. "Were not there yet," said Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, whose team failed to win a playoff series in two of the past three seasons. "The last two years, we battled to get into the playoffs. To me, thats a measure of where we are. Instead of battling for the Cup, were battling to make the playoffs." It was 1-1 when the Bruins gained a 4-on-3 power play thanks to a holding penalty on Johan Franzen just 22 seconds before Brendan Smith was called for cross-checking. On a faceoff in the Detroit zone, Patrice Bergeron lured two of the three Red Wings defenders toward the corner and then passed it across the ice to Chara, who one-timed it past Gustavsson. Not usually demonstrative, Chara felt this one was worth celebrating. "It was a big game and a big goal," he said. "So Im not afraid to show it." Lucics goal with 4:27 gone in the third made it a two-goal game. Detroit made it 3-2 with 3:52 left after Rask made two acrobatic saves but left the puck to the side of the net for Zetterberg, the Red Wings captain who missed two months with back surgery and did not return until Game 4. Less than a minute later, though the Wings were called for too many men on the ice, leaving them a man down while trying to finish the comeback. With 2 minutes left in the game, the Boston fans began chanting "We want the cup!" Next up: Montreal, which swept Tampa Bay. "Guys were never ever really talking about Montreal," Iginla said. "We know theyve won their series and theyre going to be next, but the only talk today was about thinking about Detroit and getting this series over." The Bruins won it all in 2011 and returned to the Stanley Cup finals last year before they were eliminated when the Chicago Blackhawks scored two goals in 17 seconds in the final 76 seconds of Game 6. Boston seems on its way for another long playoff run this year, finishing the regular season with the best record in the NHL. "We were playing a very good team, a team with a lot of experience, the President Trophy winners," Detroit forward Daniel Alfredsson said. "This is a team that was just playing better than us and we feel a little short." The Bruins scored a power-play goal 3:27 into the first period when Dougie Hamiltons pass bounced off a defenders skate to Eriksson in the slot. Rask earned an assist on the play -- his second career playoff point. It stayed that way until Datsyuk came in and scooped up a rebound 12 seconds into a second-period power play against Lucic for high-sticking. Fredette made jumper and Ben McLemore followed with a basket, giving Sacramento an 84-62 lead at the 7:15 mark of the fourth quarter. Before Monday mornings shootaround, Bulls power forward Carlos Boozer talked with the media regarding his displeasure with coach Tom Thibodeaus tendency not to play him in the fourth quarter, when the minutes typically go to Gibson. CANTON, Ohio -- Jon Bon Jovi is hoping hes written a hit with Buffalo Bills fans in a bid to stem concerns of whether his prospective ownership group plans to buy and potentially relocate the franchise to Toronto. In a letter published by the Buffalo News on Sunday, Bon Jovi wrote that its his ownership groups objective "to make the Bills successful in Buffalo." The letter, titled "Why Were Bidding on the Buffalo Bills," marks the first time the New Jersey rocker has publicly discussed his plans regarding the franchise. The team is for sale after Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilson died in March. "There has been a lot of conjecture, so we think its important to clarify our intentions to the fans of the team and people of Buffalo," Bon Jovi wrote. "I know how much the Bills mean to the people of this region. So I want you to hear this from me: Im not risking it all to let you down. If we are given the chance to be the next owners of the Buffalo Bills, I promise you that we will bring the same passion that you do every Sunday, every day." Calling it his intention to "carry on Ralph Wilsons legacy" in Buffalo, Bon Jovi said his group is committed to working with state and local officials and the business community to identify a new stadium site in the region. At no point in the seven-paragraph letter does Bon Jovi name his two partners or mention they are both from Toronto. His group is rounded out by Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, and the Rogers family which controls Rogers Communications. The Toronto groups intentions have been met with skepticism in Buffalo. Two weeks ago, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz told The Associated Press that he has no doubts regarding the groups long-term intentions to move the team to Toronto. Under their lease that runs through the 2022, the Bills are essentially locked into playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium through the 2019 season. There is a one-time exception that would allow them to break the agreement for just under $28.4 million in 2020. The deal also includes a strict non-relocation clause in which the Bills -- including Wilsons estate -- are not allowed to negotiate with anyone, who to their knowledge, has an intention of relocating the team during the term of the lease. The Bills Fan Alliance, a group of fans and business leaders, questioned Bon Jovis intentions in a statement released Sunday. "While we appreciate his sentiment, its worth noting that nowhere in his letter does he write or directly state that he will not move the Bills from Buffalo," wrote the Alliances directors, Matt Sabuda, Brian Cinelli and Steve Brady. The group urged Bon Jovi to back up his statements with actions by signing a binding pre-purchase agreement to waive the one-year buyout clause. "Anything short of formal action taken on their part will be viewed as nothing more than rhetoric," the Alliance directors wrote. Fans have also organized a ban on Bon Jovi music being played in Buffalo. The group has printed T-shirts and posters with the motto: "Bon Jovi Free Zone." Numerous fans were spotted wearing the shirts and carrying placards at the Pro Football Hall of Fame ceremonies on Saturday night, when former Bills receiver Andre Reed was among the seven inductees. Reed is a member of the Fan Alliance. He drew cheers during his induction speech by saying: "Oh yeah, and the Bills will stay in Buffalo, too." NHL Buffalo Sabres owner Terry and Kim Pegula and New York real estate mogul Donald Trump are also in the running to buy the Bills. Prospective groups are set to begin making formal bids to buy the team in the coming weeks. A potential owner could be identified by as early as Labor Day. The Bills most recently were valued by Forbes at $870 million but are expected to sell for at least $1 billion, partly because NFL teams rarely go on the market. In his letter, Bon Jovi noted his interest in buying an NFL franchise grew when he founded the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League. He sold his interests in the team a few years ago. "My family and I are prepared to make this life-changing commitment to be part of the Bills," Bon Jovi wrote. "This is not a hobby or an acquisition. Building a winner on and off the field will be job one, and I intend to spend as much time on the ground in Buffalo as needed to accomplish that goal." Salomon Shoes Clearance Sale . (SportsNetwork.com) - A highly anticipated battle between teams that swapped head coaches during the offseason is on tap today, as John Tortorella and the Vancouver Canucks visit Alain Vigneaults New York Rangers for a clash at Madison Square Garden. One of the most intriguing storylines of the offseason began with Tortorella and Vigneault being fired last May by the Rangers and Canucks, respectively. Before the end of June both coaches landed on their feet by taking each others former job, with Vigneault landing in the Big Apple and Tortorella moving from the East Coast to the West to lead the Canucks. Tortorella is the one making a homecoming on Saturday, as he returns to New York for the first time since being fired. He led the Rangers to the playoffs in four of five seasons, but was only able to get the club past the second round once, when the Blueshirts lost to New Jersey in the 2012 Eastern Conference finals. "Quite honestly, weve beaten this thing up. Were going there (and) its another game on the schedule. Its a very important game for us to try and gain some traction," said Tortorella. "Were going in there to coach, be with the team, try to win a hockey team and get the hell out of there." Vigneault, who will have to wait until April 1 for his return to Vancouver, led the Canucks to 30-or-more wins in six straight seasons before the lockout- shortened campaign helped ended that streak. He also got Vancouver to within one win of the franchises first Stanley Cup title in the spring of 2011, only to lose a home Game 7 to the Bruins. Vigneault was fired after the Canucks lost for the second straight time in the opening round during last springs playoffs. Under Tortorella this season, the Canucks are off to a 13-9-5 start, while the Rangers are 13-13-0 with Vigneault behind the bench. The Canucks enter todays tilt in New York coming off a win, but Thursdays 5-2 rout in Ottawa was just the second victory in nine outings for Tortorellas club. Daniel Sedins 300th career NHL goal highlighted a second-period barrage on Thursday. The Canucks had found scoring to be a difficult task of late, but they pumped home four in the second against the Senators, including three in a 3:35 span. Sedin, David Booth, Jason Garrison and Mike Santorelli each had a goal and one assist for Vancouver, which had totaled two goals or less in seven of its previous eight games. Not surprisingly, the Canucks posted only one win during that stretch. "We wanted to create more offense and we did," Garrison said. "It was nice to get one. We responded in the second after a poor start." Roberto Luongo made 37 saves in Vancouvers sixth straight win over the Senators. Luongo is 7-11-1 with a tie and a 2.73 goals against average in 21 career outings against the Rangers. New York has taken the last two encounters in this series, but the Blueshirts and Canucks havent faced each other since Oct. 18, 2011, when Tortorella led the Rangers to a 4-0 victory in Vancouver. Despite losing the two most recent matchups, however, the Canucks have still claimed nine of the past 12 meetings in this series. Vancouver also has won four of six and six of the last nine encounters in NYC. Vigneault and the Rangers will try to rebound from their second loss in three games when they take the ice today. The Blueshirts visited Boston on Friday afternoon and were handed a 3-2 regulation loss despite carrying a 2-1 edge into the third period. Bostons Patrice Bergeron tied the game at 2-2 when he scored just 1:35 into the third period and Zdeno Chara provided the winning tally for the hosts with 8:55 remaining in regulation. Ryan McDonagh and Rick Nash scored for the Rangers, who had won three of four heading into Friday. Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 25 shots in defeat. "We got exactly what we deserved today because we gave a "B" effort," said Vigneault. Beginning with Saturdays test, the Rangers are playing two straight and 11 of their next 12 games on home ice. New York is 4-5-0 as the host this season and 9-8-0 on the road. Air Jordan 1 Sale .ca! Fox called it a productive visit and the team left open the possibility of signing him down the road.Their flirtation with the guard who was suspended last year for bullying a teammate while in Miami shows how serious the Broncos are about fixing their front line.Theyve been unable to get the ground game going and have allowed a trio of sacks on three-man rushes, as GM John Elway emphasized in his address to the team last week.Several players said Incognito would be accepted in Denvers locker room.As long as we bring in a guy thats willing to put his hand in the pile to help us win a world championship, thats all that really matters, Sanders said. There are a lot of guys around the NFL that have baggage, but everyone deserves a second chance. If we bring him in, well welcome him with open arms.If he comes on our team, were going to embrace him and accept him and welcome him, safety Rahim Moore agreed. We dont worry about distractions. All we worry about is making plays and winning games.Knighton said nothing would change as far as the Broncos are concerned. He would have to adjust to our locker room, Knighton said. We have a way that we do things here and that starts at the top with Mr.dddddddddddd. Elway. And we do everything so that we can win a championship. His past or anything that hes been through doesnt mean anything in this locker room. If hes here to help us win, thats all we care about. The Broncos have already made four changes to their O-line.They replaced Chris Clark with Paul Cornick at right tackle last month. Last week, they inserted Will Montgomery at centre and moved Manny Ramirez to right guard and Louis Vasquez to right tackle. Its never ideal to change centres midstream, but Peyton Manning said hes worked off and on with Montgomery since the off-season and I thought Will did a good job in his first start as a Bronco. There was more shuffling Wednesday when left tackle Ryan Clady (groin) and left guard Orlando Franklin (knee) were limited at practice. At least they were cozy. The Broncos new 85,000-square foot, 6 1/2-story tall indoor facility is the gemstone of their $35 million headquarters refurbishing. It includes locker rooms, meeting rooms and other amenities that will surely attract other teams for joint workouts during the summer. We want to entice another team to come practice with us, said Chip Conway, the Broncos vice-president of operations. We wanted to try to, and believe we can, give a visiting team everything they need.In years past, the Broncos would bus to a nearby facility that wasnt ideal for football. Safety Quinton Carter blew out a hamstring and a knee while avoiding a soccer goal after defending a deep pass there in 2012.Thats not a problem in the new place.Theres lots of room on the sidelines and behind the end zones, Carter said, smiling. Theres nothing to run into anymore. They did it right, team president and CEO Joe Ellis said. The only think we cant do out here, the only guy we really put the screws to is Britton Colquitt. He cant punt in here, because hes going to hit the roof, so hell have to go outside.Another caveat: no gum, no chewing tobacco and no seeds on the new turf. That last one will be an issue for Fox, whos replaced his nicotine habit with sunflower seeds.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hey Kerry, As always, I really enjoy your take on some of the questionable plays/calls/non-calls. I thought I would try and lighten it up a little with a request for you to share a truly funny or odd moment that you may have had while the players were lining up at the dot. There have been a couple of brief interchanges recently that made me think of this, the latest being at about 12:23 of the first in the Hawks/Kings game on Monday. With all the games you have done, there must be a few. Care to share any? Thanks again, Bajuhn Hey Bujuhn, The camera often catches intense debates between players or coaches and the officials but misses the lighter, humorous side that helps to bring the temperature down and build healthy professional working relationships. I learned early in my career that the use of humor, when appropriate (especially self-deprecating), had its place on the ice. Early in my very first season as a referee, I had a game where the home team was getting soundly trounced and their frustration was continuously being directed at me. I responded with multiple misconduct penalties and, toward the end of the game, players were sitting three deep in the penalty box. Following another goal that took the score in double digits, the coach sent his captain over to have a word with me. Very politely the captain asked, "Mr. Referee, my coach wants to know if he can get a penalty for thinking?" I said, "Probably not if he doesnt think out loud." The captain then said, "In that case, my coach thinks you are a F-ing A-hole!" I not only found the coaches comment to be creative but very funny and I began to laugh. The stern look on the face of the coach changed to a grin and then he began to laugh as well. The humor we shared in that moment, albeit at my expense, broke the ice and taught me a valuable lesson that would serve me throughout my career. In the early 1980s, I was the first referee to wear a wireless microphone during a game at MSG between the Minnesota North Stars and the Rangers. The microphone was left open throughout the entire game so it brought the television audience directly to the action on the ice with uncensored comments. We had several dust-ups throughout the game where my mic caught all the pleasantries that were being exchanged between players. Willi Plett tried to club Don Maloney of the Rangers in once such scrum and caught me on the bridge of my nose with his glove. After Plett served his penalty, he approached me at a stoppage of play and asked, "Is this your worst game of the season?" I shot back with a smile, "No, theyre all about this caliber." Plett looked dumbfounded and shook his head while skating away. At times, I tried to council rookie officials not to take themselves so seriously in an effort to solicit player cooperation and earn respect. In 1988, my friend and colleague, linesman Pierre Champoux signed an NHL contract. Pierre quickly developed into an excellent linesman but in the beginning of his career, he did not have a very good command of the English language to put it mildly. We left training camp together that September and headed out West to work exhibition games and to work on Pierres English language skills. One of our early assignments was in Los Angeles and the rookie linesman wanted to establish his full control in the faceoff circle. Bernie Nicholls entered Pierres domain late in the first period to take the draw. In what Nicholls correctly perceived as an aggressive tone and animated gesture, the linesman commanded Nichols with, "You, put your stick down!" Bernie straightened up, cussed at Champoux by questioning who the "F" the rookie thought he was talking to? Nicholls was immediately ejected from the faceoff with a quick jerk of the linesmans thumb followed by, "You, out!"  I skated over and told Nicholls to relax as a replacement entered the faceoff circle. Between periods, I conveyed the importance of quickly developing a good working relationship with all the players to gain respect and solicit their cooperation. I acted out a role-play to demonstrate the linesmans command to Nicholls that wasnt well received; followed by a polite approach I always used by requesting the centres to "please put your sticks down." It was obvious to Pierre which method would be better received by a player in the future. I finished by commenting if Pierre still received a hostile comment from a player following his polite request to follow with a lighter approach by saying, "Why are you so grumpy, did someone piss on your cornflakes this morning?" Pierre said I like dat and he couldnt wait to get on the ice to try his new techniques in the faceoff circle; especially the cornflakes line as it turned out. As the centres arrived for the faceoff, Pierre still had a bit of an edge to his tone when he commanded, "You, put your stick down please." Getting some resistance from the player, my rookie student responded immediately with, "Put your stick down or I will piss on your corn-flake!" Something got lost in the translation. Champoux quickly developed a command of the English language and continues to be recognized by the players as a highly respected linesman in the NHL. Pierre also enjoys his bowl of cornflakes in the morning with low-fat milk. Cal Ripken Jersey . EDMONTON - A breakthrough result in her comeback from injuries has given triathlete Paula Findlay another chance to race in her hometown. The 25-year-old from Edmonton was a late addition to the Canadian team for the World Triathlon Grand Final in that city. Triathlon Canada announced Monday that Findlay will be added to the start list for the elite womens race Aug. 30. Once ranked No. 1 in the world in womens triathlon, Findlay has faced an assortment of injuries dating back to 2011 when she pulled out of a World Cup race in Edmonton. She finally raced pain-free and finished second at the Patco Premium Cup in Kelowna, B.C., on Sunday to gain consideration for the final. "Ive watched the World Cup race in Edmonton twice from the sidelines," Findlay said in a statement released by Triathlon Canada. "It is hard to watch because I have never had that experience to race at home so it means a lot to me, and will be special for sure. I have a family connection to the event with my mom who has been so involved in the planning of this race. Ive seen how much work it takes to put on an event like this. "Personally, I am starting a new chapter of my career now and to do that in my hometown will be cool." The TransCanada Corp. World Triathlon Grand Final is the last event in an eight-race series that determines the years mens and womens world triathlon champions. The competition includes world junior, under-23 and paratriathlon champions as well. Findlay joins Victorias Kirsten Sweetland, a silver medallist at this months Commonwealth Games, and Sarah-Anne Brault of Quebec City in the elite womens field. Kyle Jones of Oakville, Ont., and Andrew Yorke of Caledon, Ont., race the elite mens event Aug. 31. Findlays star shone bright prior to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She won six world championship series races over 2010 and 2011, including one on Londons Olympic course. But a hip injury suffered while preparing for a World Cup in Edmonton in July, 2011, was the beginning of a downward spiral. She split with her coach the following spring. With only six weeks of quality training prior to the Olympics, Findlay crossed the finish line last in London and sobbed out an apology to Canada. Olympic gold and silver medallist Simon Whitfield criticized her support team the following day for their handling of Findlays situation. Its been a series of health issues for Findlay since then which limited her races. The latest was a stress fracture in her pelvis diagnosed in March. Unable to run until recently, most of her training has been on the bike and in the pool. Findlay also has another new coach in Siri Lindley after parting ways with Joel Filiol in May. "It is not ideal to go into a world championships without a big season of races under your belt, but I got a new coach in June and it has been the best three months of my life following three very difficult years," Findlay said. "This spring I was really quite down. I lost hope and even considered giving up. But I am in such a good place right now mentally and physically. "And to be able to go back now and race in Edmonton is an extra spark of motivation for me." Triathlon Canada high-performance director Libby Burrell says Findlay deserves the chance to race in a "quality field without the weight of expectations on her shoulders." "Paula has a long road back to the top," Burrell continued. "She took a big step forward last weekend in Kelowna by finishing healthy and happy. This will be another small step in her journey to returning to being an elite athlete. Every decision we make regarding her now is with her long term health as our primary focus." Sweetland is a former world junior champion who also ran a gauntlet of injuries in her career. The 25-year-old won bronze in a World Triathlon Series race in Hamburg, Germany, this summer in addition to her Commonwealth silver in Glasgow, Scotland. "I have always looked up to Kirsten. Shes obviously been through a rough patch and similar journey to me and made her way back to the top," Findlay said. "Kirsten has shown it is possible. It is not easy, but it is possible." Poor shooting cost the Cleveland Cavaliers in a game they desperately needed. Mike Scott ended a scoring slump with 26 points and the Hawks beat Cleveland 117-98 on Friday night in a costly setback for the Cavaliers late-season playoff push. Atlanta moved one game ahead of the New York Knicks, who lost to Washington 90-89, in the race for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks had lost seven of eight but recovered with strong games by Scott and Jeff Teague, who had 20 points and 12 assists. "All year and under a lot of difference circumstances weve said we like our group and theyre resilient," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "They played with a lot of focus and effort and attention to detail and all the things we really talk about every night." Cavaliers coach Mike Brown was unhappy to see his team struggle with so much on the line. "They kicked our behind from the beginning to the end," Brown said. The Cavaliers lost an opportunity to move within a game of eighth place. Entering the game, Cleveland had won five of six but fell three games behind the Hawks with only five games remaining in the regular season. Brown was discouraged but stopped short of saying the Cavaliers couldnt recover from the loss. "No, it doesnt feel like its over but the loss is very, very disappointing," Brown said. "The way we lost it looked like we werent playing for much out there." Dion Waiters led Cleveland with 23 points. Spencer Hawes had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Kyrie Irving and Luol Deng each had 13 points. Scott made 12 of 13 shots from the field. The backup forward had a combined 16 points in his past four games. He topped that with 18 in the first half. "Finally," Scott said. "I was in a little shooting slump. I just kept being aggressive and kept gettingg extra shots and they finally fell.dddddddddddd" The Hawks set a season high with 39 first-quarter points, made 58.5 per cent of their shots from the field and never trailed. Atlanta led 39-23 after the first period. "The start that we got off to was something that was important," Budenholzer said. "Defensively, I thought we had a good first quarter. I think that kind of fueled our offence and our ball movement a little bit, taking care of the ball. That gave us the cushion that we were able to keep the rest of the game." The Hawks had 35 assists, three away from their season high. The Cavaliers made only 5 of 21 3-pointers and shot 39.6 per cent from the field overall while playing from behind the full game. "They jumped on us early," said Clevelands Jarrett Jack, who had nine points. "They dictated how this game was going to be played. We were playing an uphill battle all game." The Hawks had six 3-pointers in the big first quarter and 13 for the game. Atlanta committed nine turnovers in the second quarter, but Cleveland still outscored the Hawks only 26-22 in the period and trailed 61-49 at halftime. As Cleveland opened the second half going almost five minutes without a field goal, Teague took over for Atlanta. Teague had nine points in the third period, including three straight baskets and a driving layup to beat the buzzer at the end of the period. Teague added two 3-pointers in the last 3 minutes as the Cavaliers never mounted a serious challenge. Paul Millsap had 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the Hawks. Lou Williams also had 16 points and six assists. NOTES: The Hawks completed a sweep of the three-game series. ... After missing one game with a sore right shoulder, Cavs C Anderson Varejao had nine points and five rebounds in 27 minutes. ... Irving played his second game after missing eight games with a torn bicep muscle. ... Hawes had 13 points in the third period. ' ' '

DETROIT -- Ian Kinsler enjoyed this win over his former team, even if he tried to downplay that narrative afterward. "Theyre my former club, but Im a Tiger now, and its just about winning games. It really doesnt matter who its against," Kinsler said. "Its more fun, because I know those guys and theyre friends, and its always fun to beat friends, but other than that, Im a Tiger, and Im trying to win for this club." Kinsler doubled three times and scored three runs, and Detroit snapped its four-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday night. Kinsler was traded from Texas to the Tigers in an off-season blockbuster that sent Prince Fielder to the Rangers. Fielder was put on the disabled list before the game with what is likely to be a season-ending neck problem. Austin Jackson and Andrew Romine homered for Detroit, and Anibal Sanchez (2-2) allowed two runs and five hits over seven innings. He struck out five without a walk. Scott Baker (0-1) allowed six runs and eight hits for the Rangers in six innings. The AL Central-leading Tigers were finally facing some adversity after allowing 31 runs in their previous four games. Their recent road trip included travel problems and a 13-inning loss at Cleveland on Wednesday. Then they came home and played a day game Thursday against Texas, losing 9-2. "We probably were a little bit tired, but thats no excuse for this ballclub, and tonight we just looked sharper," Kinsler said. "We looked well rested and ready to play." The Tigers fell behind again when Sanchez allowed two runs in the second, but Baker didnt hold the lead for long. Jackson tied it with a two-run homer in the second, and Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera started the Detroit third with back-to-back doubles. Detroit scored two more runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Kinsler and a run-scoring grounder by Torii Hunter. Sanchez, who won the 2013 ERA title in the American League, hadnt made it through seven innings this season before Friday. This was his second start since missing around three weeks with a finger injury on his throwing hand. "He pitched a really good game, especially once he got into a rhythm after the second," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We didnt do a thing against him after that. He had a good breaking ball and he was keeping everything down. Give him a lot of credit." Mitch Moreland opened the scoring for Texas with a two-run double, but Sanchez allowed only two harmless singles after that. Baker, the 10th pitcher to start a game for the Rangers already this season, couldnt hold off the Tigers in the middle innings. Even Romine got in on the act in the sixth, ending a 2-for-35 stretch with a homer down the line in right that gave the Tigers a 6-2 lead. It was his first career home run. "I knew that it was hard enough, I just didnt know if it was going to stay fair, because I saw it hook, and obviously I had the best angle," Romine said. "Im thinking, God, that ball better stay fair, because I dont know what else I have to do to get a hit right now." Hunter added an RBI groundout in the seventh. NOTES: Rangers leadoff hitter Leonys Martin struck out three times. ... Texas RHP Tanner Scheppers, on the DL since April 18 with elbow inflammation, is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Saturday with Double-A Frisco. ... Detroit INF Danny Worth earned a decent amount of attention when he took the mound in the ninth inning of Thursdays loss and started throwing knuckleballs. Worth struck out two hitters, and manager Brad Ausmus said hell continue to be available in an emergency. "We talked to him today about throwing a pen every 10 to 14 days," Ausmus said. "Dont get me wrong, hes an infielder, but if he can save our bullpen in a game like that, that would be great." ... Ausmus said Tigers RHP Luke Putkonen (elbow inflammation) is not expected to need surgery. ... Detroit RHP Rick Porcello (7-1) faces Texas RHP Nick Martinez (0-1) on Saturday. Nike Dunk Wholesale China . The team said Saturday that the 36-year-old Robidas is expected to miss four to six months, jeopardizing his return this season. Canadas last gold came on home ice in Ottawa in 2009, and the team is hoping to repeat that success in Toronto this year. Zach Fucale will get the start in goal for Canada. I really want them to just have fun and enjoy it, said Canadian captain Curtis Lazar. Weve worked hard to get to this point. The fans at the ACC have been awesome and I really want them to just get caught in the moment, kind of take a step back and soak it all in, because its going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and opportunity for us. I feel like if we go out there and we play the right way, the way we can, well be able to get the job done. Team Canada reached the gold medal game with a 5-1 win over Slovakia on Sunday with Nic Petan leading the way with a hat trick. Petan will start tonights game on a line with Lazar and Connor McDavid, who had three assists in the semifinal win. Canada outshot Slovakia 44-15 in the rematch of Canadas opening 8-0 win on Boxing Day. Fucale made 14 stops in the semifinal and picked up his fourth win of the tournament. Thus far, the United States has provided the toughest challenge of the tournament for Canada, who trounced Denmark in the quarterfinal. Russias road the final, however, has been much tougher. After finishing as the third seed in Group B with five points (one regulation win, one overtime win and two losses), Russia faced the United States in the quarterfinal round. Despite being outshot 41-25 by the Americans, goaltender Igor Shestyorkin led Russia to a 3-2 win over the United States. Russia then matched up against unbeaten Sweden in the semifinal round in a rematch of Swedens 3-2 win on December 29. Russia opened up a 3-0 lead in the third period before relegating Sweden to the bronze medal game with a 4-1 victory. The Russians feel their tough road to the gold medal game could be an advantage as they take another unbeaten team – and a team yet to trail - in Canada. We had a couple of pretty hard games against the U.S. and Sweden, forward Ivan Barbashyov said after Russias Sunday win. We know how to play, and well be playing the same way we played today and two days ago. This game will serve as the latest chapter in the storied history of the Canada-Russia rivalry. It is also a rematch of the 2011 World Junior final, in which Canada held a three-goal lead after two periods before losing 5-3. Russian coach VValeri Bragin called the matchup against Canada the best thing for all of the hockey community and referred to the rivalry as a hockey classic.dddddddddddd That rivalry thats been together since the 72 Summit Series that Ive been told about and see highlights of all the time, its going to be something special, Canadian defenceman Joe Hicketts told the Canadian Press. Its an honour for me to get to wear the Maple Leaf in that game. Though the two teams did not meet in the tournament, the two met in pre-tournament action on December 19. Canada dominated Russia with a 53-23 differential in shots, but Shestyorkin turned all but one aside as Russia picked up a 2-1 overtime win. Fucale was in net for the loss. For Canada, McDavid insisted after the teams semifinal win he would play against Russia and was fine despite colliding with teammate Curtis Lazar on Sunday. NYON, Switzerland - UEFA banned Celtic captain Scott Brown for three Champions League matches on Thursday for kicking Barcelona forward Neymar. Brown was shown a red card for clipping the Brazilian as he lay on the ground during Barcelonas 1-0 win in Glasgow on Oct. 1. UEFA said its disciplinary panel increased the automatic one-match ban to a three-match sanction. Celtic said it would challenge the verdict, which forces Brown to miss matches at home and away to Ajax, and at home against AC Milan. "The club finds this to be excessive and they will be appealing against the decision," the Scottish champion said in a statement. Celtic is in last place in the group after losing its first two matches. Cheap Stan Smith Free Shipping . GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Jennifer Johnson matched the course record with a 9-under 62 on Friday to take the first-round lead in the ShopRite LPGA Classic. The 22-year-old Johnson, the winner last year in Mobile, Alabama, had 10 birdies -- five straight on Nos. 9-13 -- and a bogey on the Bay Course at Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club. "Ive been playing well the past few weeks, so I felt pretty good about my game," Johnson said. "If you just let it happen and just let a good round come together, normally it does." Haru Nomura had a bogey-free 63, and Christina Kim opened with a 64. Top-ranked Inbee Park and Na Yeon Choi shot 66 in the morning session. But theyre all chasing Johnson, who matched the record set by Laura Davies and Jimin Kang in 2005. Johnson had a shot a 63 on the course two years ago. "On 17, thats when I was 8 under and I was trying to beat my 63," Johnson said. "So then I started getting a little nervous because my goal was to get to 10 under, but I only got to 9. But when you shoot something that youve never shot before, nerves are going to happen." Nomura had eight birdies in her career-low round. "All in all, my putting was on, my shot was really good and the conditions were great," Nomura said. "So everything was perfect today." Kim finished with seven birdies, including a 35-foot putt on 11 that she called "one of the longest putts Ive made since the 90s." Park, winless this season, had five birdies a week after missing the cut in Alabama to end her streak at 22 events. Focusing on not letting her shoulder dip down too much, which she said caused her putts to veer to the left last week, Park drained a 15-foot birdie putt on the first hole. For Park, ranked No. 1 for 59 straight weeks, that was all she needed to get back on track. "I was a little bit worried before I teed off today because of last weeks finish," Park said. "But after I birdied the first hole, that really gave me a lot of confidence going into the rest of the 17 holes." Choi closed her round with an eagle on the par-5 ninth. She said she felt "good vibes" all day after watching Rory McIlroy shoot a 9-under 63 at the Memorial Tournament on Thursday. Chois swing coach, Robin Symes, and caddie, David Jones, are both friendly with McIlroy, which has turned Choi into a big fan of the PGA Tour star. "Ive heard a lot of good stories about him," Choi said. "Ive never met him but it feels like we are good friends with each other. And hopefully one day I will see him and meet him." Second-ranked Stacy Lewis and Michelle Wie shot 67, and 17-year-old Lydia Ko was another stroke back. Wie, who has seven top-10 finishes in 10 events this year, finished with five birdies but was disappointed that only one of them came on a par 5. "Going into this golf course, I always want to take advantage of the par-5s on the front nine, but I didnt quite do that today," Wie said. "I think I did well on the par-4s and par-3s today. And tomorrow Ive just got to keep doing the same and try to take advantage of the par-5s." Hall of Famer Karrie Webb, the winner last year, opened with a 69. The eighth match-up of the Round of 32 sees perennial POY candidate Patrick Kane square off against one of the breakthrough players of the 2013-14 campaign: Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist. Kanes ability to operate at top speed never ceases to amaze and he torches a very good Colorado Avalanche team with it. He comes streaking down the right wing and with one quick move of his hands leaves Jan Hejda completely out of position. Kane absolutely freezes Hejda, leaving a sharp but clear path to the net. His backhand comes nearly from the goal line but still rockets top shelf over Semyon Varlamovs shoulder. Known for his modesty, Kane askss the Denver faithful what they think of his goal in the celebration.dddddddddddd Nyquist, meanwhile, shakes off a near-mugging to pot a beauty. The young Swede breaks in one-on-one against Matt Carle and the Lightning defender appears initially to do enough to prevent a goal, drawing a penalty in the process. However, Nyquist shakes Carles grip and pounces on the puck he just lost. From behind the goal line, he still has the presence of mind to corral the puck and toss it under a recovering Ben Bishop.
