The Edmonton Oilers reputation precedes them. For offseason acquisitions, defencemen Mark Fayne and Keith Aulie and wingers Benoit Pouliot and Teddy Purcell, that reputation includes two top-30 point producers and three top-50 goal scorers from last season and three former No. 1 overall picks. It also happens to include eight consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance. Its no secret which part of the see-saw reputation the new guys are focusing on heading toward the upcoming campaign. "The rebuild is pretty far on its way now with some of the guys they have, and especially this offseason with some of the other guys theyre bringing in," said Fayne, who was signed as a free agent on July 1. "I dont think its so much at the beginning stage anymore and I think thats only going to help." "Its a young group that desperately wants to win," Aulie, also a July 1 signing, added. "Just playing against them in the past, theyre hard working. Its an exciting team."If the Oilers do have the ability to be one thing, its exciting. Taylor Hall finished seventh in league scoring during the 2013-2014 season with 80 points, including 27 goals. Jordan Eberle and David Perron collected 28 goals each while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins set career highs in goals (19), assists (37) and points (56). Theres also former No. 1 pick Nail Yakupov, who has shown flashes of brilliance more than once in his first two seasons. "Im looking forward to actually being able to get the puck up to some of those younger guys and just let them fly," Fayne said. Star players are clearly not the problem in Edmonton, but what has been an issue in the past is complimenting those players and adding stability beyond the big names on the roster. Aside from the top four scorers on the club, no other player reached forty points last season. Only one of 28 players to appear in more than 10 games and five of 37 in total managed to avoid a minus rating. And thats a small sample size of a much larger problem. There are holes to fill and the new guys appear ready and willing to get their hands dirty. "Were not going to come in here and save the day, but we think were going to come in here and add some depth and make the team a better team," said Purcell, the returning player in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning for Sam Gagner. "Were not putting unrealistic expectations on ourselves, but we think we can help these guys." Reaching the post-season for the first time since a Game 7 loss in the Stanley Cup Final in 2006 may be an unrealistic expectation. What is likely more attainable is improving beyond the basement of the Pacific Division, where the club has finished in four of the last five seasons. "I think theres lots of work to be done, obviously," Aulie said. "Theres nowhere to go but up, so as young guys, myself and these other guys here with me, we just want to come in and make a positive impact; just help this team out because its exciting to be a part of a team thats on the upswing." "We understand how much pride this city has in the team and we just cant wait to make a positive impact." When a few shots broke through that defensive front, Jonathan Quick was there. The Kings won the Stanley Cup two years ago with that basic formula, and they can see it clicking again as they close in on another playoff run. Jeff Carter scored his 250th career NHL goal on a power play, Quick made 17 saves to remain unbeaten since the Olympic break, and the Kings beat the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 Monday night for their fifth straight victory. Jake Muzzin scored an early goal for the Kings, who have won four games in six days since the break to solidify their playoff position in the Pacific Division, 10 points ahead of fourth-place Vancouver. The Kings might not be the most eye-catching team in the NHL, but the back-to-back Western Conference finalists results are becoming increasingly attractive. "Were playing the way I expected us to play coming out of the break," said Justin Williams, who got an assist on Muzzins goal just 1:54 in by leading a rush. "Were playing hard and not giving up leads. We do need to capitalize on more of our chances, but its two points we need for playoff position." Los Angeles took an early lead and hung on through 35 closing minutes of scoreless hockey for its first home victory over the Canadiens since March 8, 2003. Quick put together another outstanding game for the Kings on the heels of his performance for the U.S. national team in Sochi, making a handful of big saves to beat the Canadiens for the first time in his career. With his 168th win, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner is just three behind Rogie Vachon for the Los Angeles franchise record. "The style that we play, those are the kind of games youre going to see more often than not," Quick said. "At times it was a little slow, but I thought we carried the game for the most part. We didnt give them many opportunities. It was the kind of game you want to play." The Kings followed up their 6-0 victory at Montreal on Dec. 10 with another solid performance against the Canadiens built around that defence. Loss Angeles has allowed an NHL-low 134 goals, and Montreal couldnt crack the Kings defence except for P.ddddddddddddK. Subbans fortunate deflection goal late in the first period. "We played against the best defensive team in the league, and that showed," Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. Peter Budaj stopped 20 shots for Montreal, which had won five of six. The Canadiens opened a four-game West Coast trip with their first regulation loss since Feb. 2 -- and a taste of the frustration felt by Los Angeles more frequent opponents. "We couldnt get much sustained pressure, and thats a big part of it," Montreal captain Brian Gionta said. "We got a lucky bounce on the one goal, but for the most part, we werent able to get to the net as freely as we wanted. Weve got to give them credit for that, but weve got to find ways to break through." Montreal put goalie Carey Price on injured reserve with an apparent groin injury before the game, eight days after he posted a shutout in Canadas gold medal-winning victory over Sweden in Sochi. Budaj has started every game since the break, but Price might be able to play in Wednesdays game at NHL-leading Anaheim. Although Los Angeles dominated possession early, the Canadiens tied it late in the period when Quick blocked Subbans long shot, and the puck ricocheted off Jarret Stoll and into Quicks net. Carter put the Kings back ahead early in the second period, putting Anze Kopitars pass into the top corner of Budajs net with a slick wrist shot for his 22nd goal of the season. "The first 10 minutes, they certainly were coming fast, and we didnt have an answer for it," Montreal forward Brendan Gallagher said. "At the end, we had our chances and started to create stuff, but they are a good defensive team and they dont give up a lot." LOS ANGELES -- Despite having the NBAs best record, the Indiana Pacers realize theres always room for improvement. David West scored 14 of his 24 points in the third quarter and grabbed 12 rebounds, Paul George had 27 points, and the Pacers improved their best start in franchise history to 16-1 on Sunday with a 105-100 victory that snapped the Los Angeles Clippers four-game winning streak. "We can become a lot better. Were still nowhere close to where we want to be offensively, and thats the next step for us," George said. "The defence is clicking well, the transition defence is clicking well, and were playing like a team. This was a great win for us. We knew coming in that it was going to be a hard-fought game." Jamal Crawford led the Clippers with 20 points -- the 10th time this season that a Pacers opponent didnt have anyone with more than 20. Chris Paul had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Blake Griffin scored 16 and pulled down 12 rebounds, equaling teammate DeAndre Jordans total. "Were always up for a challenge, and we had a good one today," said centre Roy Hibbert, who helped fuel the Pacers seventh straight win with 19 points. "The Clippers are going to be a contender for the Western Conference finals, so we just had to get in there and grind it out today and finish it off. But we have a lot more work to do. We dont worry about swagger. Were just five individuals out there on the court playing together." The defending Pacific Division champion Clippers played their first game since finding out that J.J. Redick will be sidelined six to eight weeks because of a broken bone in his shooting hand and a ligament tear in his right elbow. Redick will be re-evaluated on Monday by hand specialist Dr. Steve Shin to determine what further course of treatment will be necessary. His injuries, which occurred in Friday nights 104-98 overtime win at Sacramento, complicated things even more for the Clippers with reserve forward Matt Barnes missing his sixth straight game due to an eye injury. "The ligament looks intact, so they shouldnt have to operate on that," Redick said. "Its just the fragments of the bone. Its still swollen and theres some pain there. Its frustrating, because I have enjoyed those 17 games immensely." Los Angeles used the same starting lineup in each of its first 16 games before Paul sat out Fridays game with a right hamstring strain. Rivers opted to continue using Jamal Crawford off the bench despite his 31-point outing at Sacramento, so Willie Green started in Redicks place and scored only two points in 15 minutes. West capped a 13-3 run with an 18-footer and two free throws to give the Pacers their biggest lead, 74-60, with 4:48 left in the third. Los Angeles closed to 93-89 on Jordans dunk off an alley-oop lob from backup point guard Darren Collison with 7:12 to play. Paul set up another one by Jordan with 1:05 to go, pulling the Clippers within 102-100. "Its going to happen. I mean, the way CP can move the ball and throw the ball up, were not going to take that lob away," George said. "But were not going to give up 3s and were not going to let their shooters get hot." The Clippers had a chance to tie it again after a missed 3-point shot by Lance Stephenson at the other end. But Paul missed a 15-footer that rattled around the rim, and the Pacers made three of four free throws in the final 6.9 seconds to put it away. "I had two great looks at the end," Paul said. "If I make one of those shots it ties the game up and puts pressure on them, so I was mad and disgusted in myself because I got the shot that I wanted." George powered the Pacers to a 53-47 halftime lead with 18 points. The Clippers trailed by 11 late in the first quarter before taking their only lead, 41-40, on a dunk by Griffin with 3:05 left in the half. NOTES: The Pacers began a five-game road trip that includes matchups with the top-four teams in the Western Conference -- including Portland, San Antonio and Oklahoma City. ... The Clippers start a seven-game trip on Wednesday night, all against teams that dont have a winning record. ... The Pacers blocked four shots, increasing their NBA-best total to 125. Hibbert leads the league with 61. ... The Pacers, who came in averaging 19.4 points off turnovers, converted 12 Clippers turnovers into 17 points. ... The Clippers shot 43.9 per cent against the Pacers, who came in with the NBAs best defensive field goal percentage (38.7) and the fewest points allowed per game (85.6). Cheap Nike Roshe Shoes . It didnt take long for them to find out via social media that coach Randy Carlyle was coming back — with a two-year extension — and assistants Greg Cronin, Scott Gordon and Dave Farrish were being let go.CALGARY - When overtime started, Josh Jooris was sitting in the penalty box. When it ended, he was being mobbed by his teammates.Jooris scored at 1:08 of overtime to lead the Calgary Flames to a wild 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday.I was fortunate to come out of the box at the right time and they (Jiri Hudler and Dennis Wideman) just made a great play and I was able to put it in, said Jooris, who took a tripping penalty at 19:01 of the third period while Edmontons Jeff Petry was sent to the box at the same time for embellishment. I was just hoping that we keep it in their zone and have possession of the puck when I came out of the box because its either Petry has 15 feet on me or I have 15 feet on him.Jooris jumped out of the box and took a pass from Hudler before wiring a shot into the top corner, glove side behind Edmonton goalie Ben Scrivens. We needed that two points and the fact that it came against a big rival in Edmonton, its sweeter, said Jooris, who returned to the Calgary lineup after missing the past three games with an upper-body injury. I havent been a part of this rivalry for too long, but you feel it out there. You want to beat them every time.Joe Colborne counted his second and third goals of the season — all against the Oilers — for the Flames (21-15-3).I knew sooner or later they were going to start to go in and its nice to start getting some bounces, said Colborne, who scored his first goal of the season during a 4-1 win over the Oilers at the Saddledome four days earlier. Its especially nice getting them against them, but I wouldnt mind having this success against some other teams, too.Lance Bouma also scored, while Sean Monahan and Curtis Glencross chipped in with two assists each. Making his sixth consecutive start in net for the Flames, goalie Jonas Hiller made 17 saves to improve his record to 13-10-2.Matt Fraser, Jordan Eberle and Andrew Ference scored for the Oilers (8-22-8), while goalie Scrivens stopped 24-of-28 shots he faced in a losing cause.Right now I love our starts, said Eberle, who ended a nine-game goalless drought. I love the way were competing for 40 minutes. It seems like the last two games, weve almost let them come at us and weather the storm and thats not how you win hockey games in this league. You keep going at teams. You continue to play the way that got you the lead.Calgary built up a 5-1 advantage in shots in the first period, but couldnt geet any pucks past Scrivens, who made 39 saves one night earlier to backstop the Oilers to a 3-2 shootout win over the L.ddddddddddddA. Kings in Edmonton.Edmonton opened the scoring at 16:06 of the first with a power-play goal by Fraser, who was claimed off waivers from the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. Hiller stopped the initial shot by David Perron before Fraser adeptly picked up the puck behind the net and banked it off the Calgary goalie and in.I think this team is pretty fragile right now, said Fraser after the loss. I heard it a long time ago that losing can be contagious and part of that, being a new guy in here coming from an organization like Boston, is youve got to bring that element of your game when youre not content with losing. For myself, Ive got to bring something every night so they can see that I want to be a guy that is a difference maker. The Flames had a great chance to even the score after Edmonton defenceman Keith Aulie was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for a hit to the head on Matt Stajan with 54.2 seconds left in the first period.Scrivens stopped a slap shot fired his way by Mark Giordano and then the rebound attempt by Glencross as time expired in the first. Early in the second on the same power play, Colborne tipped Widemans point shot past Scrivens, but the Edmonton goalie recovered in time to smother the puck with his glove before it crossed the goal-line.Eberle gave the Oilers a 2-0 lead at 10:28 of the second when he took a feed from Leon Draisaitl in the slot and lifted a shot over Hillers blocker and into the Calgary net.Colborne pulled the Flames within a goal with a power-play marker at 18:01 of the second when he converted a feed from Monahan.Bouma tied things up at 4:28 of the third when he backhanded a shot from the slot past Scrivens, who stopped the initial shot taken by Paul Byron.Ference then regained the lead for the Oilers when he took a pass from Draisaitl and blasted a low shot from the point past Hiller. The see-saw battle continued when Colborne drove to the net and shovelled a shot through Scrivens legs at 11:55 of the third.Notes: Calgary now has an all-time record of 17-8-3 on games played on New Years Eve. … The Flames improved to 8-11-1 when trailing after two periods. … Mason Raymond was a healthy scratch after failing to record a point in his past 13 games with the Flames. … Hudler extended his point-scoring streak to five straight games. SHANGHAI, China -- For 16 holes, Dustin Johnson looked like the player who has won every year since turning pro and has played on two Ryder Cup teams. Starting the third round of the HSBC Champions with a five-shot lead, he blasted his way to 10 birdies and was running away from the field. As for the other two holes, it was a reminder that no lead is safe in his hands. All those birdies were offset by two double bogeys, the last one cutting his lead in half going into the final round of this World Golf Championship. About the only thing that cheered him up Saturday afternoon was a 6-under 66 for a three-shot lead over Ian Poulter. "Its a good score," Johnson said. "Im definitely happy with what I shot. Im just not happy with the way I finished. Making two doubles, theres no excuse for that, especially the way Im playing right now." Johnson ran off five straight birdies to close out a 30 on the front nine of Sheshan International and a five-shot lead over Poulter. For his next trick, the 29-year-old American hit wedge four times from inside 100 yards before he could get the ball on the green at the 10th hole. He had to make a 12-foot putt for double bogey. He followed with another run of four straight birdies, hitting a 5-iron into 15 feet for a two-putt birdie on the par-5 14th, and a 3-iron to the front of the 16th green for a chip-and-putt birdie that stretched his lead to six shots. Everything changed in the final half-hour of a soft, gentle day for scoring in Shanghai. Poulter, who shot 30 on the front nine without making birdie on either of the par 5s, closed with a birdie on the par-5 18th for a 63. He thought that was a good day of work, even though he wasnt making up any ground on Johnson. "This golf course gives up a lot of birdies, and hes a good player," Poulter said. "And in this form, hes going to make a lot of birdies. I just need to do my thing tomorrow and make a lot more than what he does. Im going to have to see what happens coming down the stretch." Poulter was talking about Sunday afternoon. He didnt realize he would be getting some help on Saturday. Johnsons tee shot sailed to the right and into the middle of the lake on the 18th. It appeared that he could have dropped further up the fairway, but playing partners Boo Weekley and Bubba Watson didnt offer much help as to where (or if) the shot ever crossed land before it entered the hazard. Not wanting to take any chance, Johnson opted to return to the tee. He ripped another drive down the edge of the water, this time with his draw to reach the fairway. But his approach went left near the lip of a bunker, and he did well to blast out to 15 feet and take two putts for his 7. Johnson was at 18-under 198 and will be in the final group with Poulter and Graeme McDowell, who had a 64 and was four shots behind. Rory McIlroy birdied three of his last five holes for a 67 and was six shots behind, along with Graham DeLaet and U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, who each had a 65. They still had an outside chance, though so much of that depends on Johnson and how to he responds to his pair of double bogeys. "Im still a little mad from my double bogey on 18," Johnson said. "Obviously, to have a three-shot lead going into the last day is good and Im looking forward to the challenge. I still have to play really well. The guys that are right behind me, theyre playing very well, too. So its still going to be a tough day tomorrow. Got to come out and make a lot of birdies." That wasnt the problem -- for Johnson and most everyone else. Martin Kaymer, who won the HSBC Champions two years ago by tying the course record with a 63 in the final round, went one better. The German started with six birdies in seven holes and thought briefly about a 59 with three straight birdies on the front nine that put him at 10-under with three to play. He missed an 8-foot birdie on No. 7, failed to birdie the par-5 eighth and had to settle for a course record 62. Kaymer was eight shots behind. "Ive shot 59 before and I thought, Theres a chance, especially after my birdies on 4, 5, 6," Kaymer said. "But you cant make them all." McDowell was six shots out of the lead when he finished and it looked as though he might lose ground to Johnson. Even so, McDowell has a lot at stake on Sunday at No. 2 on the European Tour money list, and he could move past Henrik Stenson in the Race to Dubai if he were to finish alone in second. "From here, it looks like Dustin is going to have to beat himself for anybody to have a chance to catch him," McDowell said. "Race to Dubai points will be very important to me. I have a lot to play for tomorrow. If not the trophy, second place will certainly be worth my while." And then, the trophy became a little more realistic. "I have to do my thing tomorrow," Poulter said. "Its only Saturday. You cant win tournaments on Saturday. Its all about playing well on Sunday." "I was asked, do I need to talk with Donald, and I passed, quite honestly," Rivers said Monday. "I dont think right now is the time or the place, for me, at least. I just took a pass." Sterling is purported to have told a woman not to bring black people to his games or associate with them. "Yeah, I believe he said those things. But I still want to make sure," Rivers said during a conference call. "As far as believing those things? I heard what he said. Until someone tells me differently, you usually listen to what people say. I havent given him his due process. I havent given him an opportunity to explain himself and quite honestly right now I dont want him to. I want to wait for that further judgment." The coach cancelled practice Monday, a day after a 118-97 loss to the Golden State Warriors that evened their playoff series at 2-2. "I just felt like they needed to breathe. Theyve been inundated with this," Rivers said. Still, he said pretty much the entire team was at the clubs practice facility. "Ill go down and say hi to them and talk to them, make sure theyre in the right place. Right now its more than basketball. This is a non-basketball decision that I thought I had to make and I thought it was right decision. If you get your life better, then you can probably do your work better. They need to do that." Game 5 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles. "These last 48 hours or so have been really hard for our players and everyone," Rivers said. "Id just like to reiterate how disappointed I am in the comments attributed to our owner. I cant tell you how upset I am, our players are." Warriors coach Mark Jackson suggested that Clippers fans should boycott the game. "I believe iif it was me, I wouldnt come to the game," Jackson said.dddddddddddd"I believe the fans, the loudest statement that they can make as fans is to not show up to the game. ... To me, it will make the noise of it not being tolerated. That this is a different time. Its unfortunate, and we cannot allow someone with these feelings to profit." Rivers said he knew Jackson was speaking from his heart and that everyone has their opinion. "I dont share that. I hope its packed and people are cheering for us, the players. And they were cheering for the players before this happened. But if they feel differently, who can say theyre wrong? And Im not the one thats going to say that, I can tell you that." Rivers said its still to be determined whether he or a player will address the crowd. "Again, we dont know the right answer," Rivers said. "We want to do right here. We want to make the best decisions here. If we feel thats something will help our fans, then it will be done. If we feel its something they dont need, we wont do it. The tickets have already been sold. The fans, theyre in a dilemma as well. We want them to cheer for their players and their team. Because its still their players and their team, and it will be their players and their team. I think from what I get from the fans Ive heard from, thats how they feel, like, This is my team, these are my players Im cheering for, and thats not going to change. I hope that continues." Rivers said the controversy has been tough on his players. "What other players are going through Should I be playing thoughts in the middle of a playoff series? I sympathize for my players. They didnt sign on for this. Yet here they are and theyre in the middle of it and they have to deal with it. They didnt do anything wrong and theyre in the middle of it, and they didnt ask to be. SAN FRANCISCO - Free agent reliever Sergio Romo is closing in on a $15 million, two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because a final detail remained to be worked out and the agreement was subject to a physical scheduled for Thursday. Romo could earn an additional $500,000 annually in performance bonuses based on games finished. The 31-year-old right-hander has spent all seven of his big league seasons with San Francisco, helping the Giants win three World Series championships in the past five years. He went 6-4 with a 3.72 ERA with 23 saves in 64 outings last season as San Francisco earned the wild card and went on to win it all against Kansas City.Romo and Santiago Casilla have shared the closer job in recent years, with Casilla again taking over ninth-inning duties in 2014 after Romo blew three saves in June — a move by manager Bruce Bochy that paid off down the stretch.Giants general manager Brian Sabean had a strict to-do list in what has been a quiet off-season so far for the reigning champions. MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins and right-hander Anthony Swarzak have agreed to a $935,000, one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. Swarzak went 3-2 with a 2.91 ERA in 48 games for the Twins last season. He made all of those appearances out of the bullpen for the first time in his four-year career. In years past, Swarzak was often used as a spot starter when the rotation faltered or someone went down with an injury. The versatility makes him a valuable member of the staff, one that manager Ron Gardenhire and pitching coach Rick Anderson trust to put out there in a number of situations. The deal, which was announced on Saturday, means the Twins have reached contracts with all their arbitration-eligible players for 2014. Air Max Plus Clearance . The ninth match-up of the Round of 32 sees Sidney Crosby finish off a pretty sequence of passes, while Kyle Turris breaks away. For all the skill and smarts Crosby possesses, this is one highlight where he simply finds himself in the right place at the right time. Looking to expose the Washington Capitals down low on a power play, the Penguins drop four of their players below the hash marks and begin to move the disc around. The tape-to-tape action starts with Evgeni Malkin, who finds Chris Kunitz. Kunitz taps it towards the goal line for James Neal, drawing the attention of all four Capitals defenders. Unfortunately, they forgot about Sid. Neaal goes cross-crease and nearly through the legs of John Carlson to find Sid wide open for the one-knee, one-time finish.dddddddddddd Turris, though, gets to the POY showdown by going it alone. He, too, victimizes the Caps but his moves move one way: straight to the net. He barrels over the blue line freezing Mike Green, who earns a delayed penalty. He then shakes off some harassment from John Erskine before reaching for some open net with a ridiculous drag that leaves Philipp Grubauer with no chance of stopping the puck. SALT LAKE CITY -- Derrick Favors made quite an impression with the first game-winning shot of his career -- at any level. Through all his years of playing basketball, even in grade school, Favours had never been the last-second hero. "My first game-winner ever," Favors proclaimed after he finished with a flourish to beat Los Angeles Friday night. His putback dunk with 2.1 seconds remaining lifted the Utah Jazz to a 105-103 victory over the depleted Lakers. With the game tied at 103, Gordon Hayward drove to the basket on Utahs final possession but missed his off-balance attempt as the Lakers converged. Favours grabbed the rebound and slammed the ball home to snap Utahs four-game home losing streak. "The two big guys for the Lakers went over and altered his shot a little bit. It went off the rim and I was just there for the offensive rebound," said Favours, who had 18 points and 14 rebounds. The big mans follow jam was a relief to the Hayward and the Jazz. "He came in and cleaned up. I saw him with the finish and thats all I needed to see," said Hayward, who had with 24 points and nine assists. Utah coaches called the play for Hayward but reminded their players multiple times "to crash the boards hard," according to Trey Burke. "We had run that angle pick-and-roll with success throughout the game," Hayward said of the final play. "I tried to get to the basket and put it up on the rim there and give everyone a chance to rebound. They made a mistake by not boxing out Fav." The ailing Lakers seemed to be fighting back all night. Jodie Meeks tied the game at 99-all, but Hayward hit a 3-pointer, made a steal and hit one of two free throws to put Utah ahead. Jordan Hill put in a follow and then made a pair of free throws to knot the game at 103 with 18.6 seconds left. Nick Young scored 21 points in 27 minutes before fouling out with 5:45 remaining and Chris Kaman had a season-high 19 points starting in place of Pau Gasol, who was out with a respiratory infection. Kobe Bryant (knee fracture) and point guards Steve Nash (back) and Steve Blake (elbow) remain sidelined for Lakers, who have lost four in a row. Bryant missed his fifth game after a short six-game comeback after Achilles surgery and is not expected back for three to five weeks. Midway through the fourth quarter, Alec Burks hit 3 of 4 free throws and then tracked down a long rebound and fed the streaking Hayward for a dunk that made it 96-90. The rim-rocking slam brought a thunderous roar from the first sellout crowd of the season since opening night. "They pumped us up, man. We went on a couple runs and we couldnt even hear anything," Hayward said. "Its good to be home." Down the stretch, the Lakers fought back behind Hill, who had 13 points in the final period. Marvin Williams scored 16 points, Trey Burke had 14 points and seven assists, and Burks had 13 points for the Jazz, who stopped their worst home skid since losing seven straight in February and March of 2011. The Jazz are finally starting to learn how to win close games, coming out on top in a contest that featured 14 lead changes and 16 ties. "The poise we showed down the stretch after we gave up the lead, the fight to make big plays by Derrick and Gordon to win, that shows growth," Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. Los Angeles did have Jordan Farmar, who had 16 points and seven assists. "I felt better down the stretch. But my legs were a little heavy and I missed some shots short that I should have made to help us out," said Farmar, who missed 10 games with a hamstring tear and then played 33 minutes against Miami on Christmas Day without the benefit of a full practice, scoring three points on 1-of-7 shooting. Without Blake and Nash, they dont have much of a choice but to go with Farmar, who spent last season playing in Turkey. "Im going to stay aggressive, keep working and get it back soon so I can help this team take it to the next level," Farmar said. ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves hope Dan Ugglas improved vision will give the offence a much-needed boost. Uggla was activated from the disabled list and in the lineup Wednesday night against the Cleveland Indians. The move came two weeks after the second baseman underwent Lasik eye surgery. "Im very happy with how it went," said Uggla, who was batting sixth against the Indians. Uggla played two rehab games at Triple-A Gwinnett, going 2 for 7 with a homer. But he also struck out four times -- a familiar problem all season with the Braves. "They have that six oclock start out there, so it was going into bad shadows," Uggla said. "I was expecting the worst. But I could actually see the ball OK. It actually got better and better as the night went on." When Uggla went on the disabled list Aug. 13, he was hitting only .186 with an NL-leading 146 strikeouts. Despite a commanding lead in the NL East, the Braves have dealt with two huge holes in their lineup -- both Uggla and centre fielder B.ddddddddddddJ. Upton are hitting below .200. In addition, outfielder Jason Heyward is recovering from a broken jaw that could keep him out for the rest of the regular season. At least Uggla has provided some power, ranking second on the team with 21 homers to go along with 53 RBIs. Upton, who signed a $75.25 million contract in the off-season, was hitting .182 with eight homers and 21 RBIs. "We need to get those guys going," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. To make room for Uggla, the Braves optioned outfielder Todd Cunningham to Gwinnett, though he will likely return shortly after the rosters expand on Sept. 1. Gonzalez also revealed that reliever Jordan Walden is battling "leg issues," which is why he hasnt pitched in a week. The manager expects Walden to return to the mound in another day or two. GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Sluggish in the first period, Phoenix scored its first two goals on fortunate bounces in the second. Once the Coyotes got rolling, there was no stopping them, particularly the way Thomas Greiss was turning away shots. Greiss stopped 27 shots, Lauri Korpikoski had a goal and two assists, and the Coyotes rolled to a 6-0 victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. "The first period was so-so, I guess, but I really thought we started to play well in the second," said Mikkel Boedker, one of seven Phoenix players with multiple points. "We got a couple of lucky bounces, but sometimes thats what you need to get going." Phoenix needed a spark after consecutive disappointing home losses to Columbus and Philadelphia. After a tight-checking first period, the Coyotes took control in the second period, scoring two of their three goals on fortuitous bounces. Phoenix raced away from the Flames after that to win in regulation for the first time since beating the Islanders 6-3 on Dec. 12. Boedker, Shane Doan, Martin Hanzal and Michael Stone each had a goal and an assist for Phoenix. Rob Klinkhammer also scored, and Mike Ribeiro and Radim Vrbata each had two assists. Greiss capped off Phoenixs big night with some tough saves for his second career shutout. "It was kind of a strange game, kind of mucky there in the first period," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "We were able to get a little puck luck there in the second and kind of pushed the game along." Calgary arrived in the desert late after playing Colorado the night before. The Flames were able to muck it up to keep up with Phoenix in the first period, but had no answer when the Coyotes got rolling. Reto Berra allowed at least five goals for the third time this season, and the Flames were shut out for the fourth time in six games. Calgary has lost nine of 11. "Were part of a process where excuses will not be a part of it," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "They were better than us. We kind of fell apart after those two goals." The Coyotes had Greiss between the pipes after coach Dave Tippett decided to give starter Mike Smith the night off. Smith had been anxiously awaiting word on whether he would make the Canadian Olympic team. Tippett wanted his goalie to rest after such an emotional day, even after he made the team. Though he wont supplant Smith as the starter -- Phoenix signed Smith to a six-year, $24 million contract last summer -- Greiss has, in some ways, been more consistent this season. In his first season with the Coyotes, Greiss entered Tuesdays game 5-2-1 with a 2.12 goals-against average. He earned the victory on Dec. 31 against Edmonton by stopping 15 shots after Smith was pulled in the second period. Greiss was solid early. He had the highlight of the defensive-dominated opening period, making a spectacular glove save when Dennis Wideman was left open in front on a power play. Greiss turned away a couple of tough shots on a power play in the second period, including a glove save on Mike Cammalleri, and stopped 13 shots in the third period. "Hes just really solid in there," Tippett said. "He doesnt do anything really flashy, just gets in front of the puck and I guess thats what hes supposed to." While Greiss kept the Coyotes in it early, two fortunate bounces put them up 2-0 quickly in the second. Doan was the recipient of the first, when Boedker sent a pass from behind the net that bounced off Berras shoulder, hit the Coyotes captains shoulder, and went in. The Coyotes scored again 1:36 later when a shot by Korpikoski ricocheted sideways off Vrbatas skate right to Hanzal, who one-timed a shot before Berra could slide over. Boedker made it 3-0 later in the period, one-timing a pass from Ribeiro for his 13th goal and career-high 29th point of the season. Korpikoski punched in his own rebound in the third period and set up Stones goal with a nice drop pass. "We played a team thats had the success theyve had because they stay patient and stick with it, and we saw the snowball effect of it," Cammalleri said. "They did it the right way and we did it the wrong way." NOTES: Phoenix had two other players added to Olympic rosters on Tuesday: Korpikoski to the Finnish team, and D Oliver Ekman-Larsson to the Swedish team. TORONTO -- Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Rick Vaive has asked that his name be removed from the concussion lawsuit against the NHL. Vaives lawyer Trevor Whiffen claims the former 50-goal man wasnt provided with a copy of the claim beforehand and that he would not have agreed to the allegations made against the NHL had he been asked to review its contents. "Mr. Vaive misunderstood the nature of the proceeding being brought, and believed this claim was similar to the workers compensation claim being advanced in California on behalf of several former NHL players," Whiffen said in a statement Thursday. "Rick has no interest in suing the National Hockey League and has advised that he will not be pursuing the claim in Washington. He has therefore instructed me to take the necessary steps required in order to remove his name from the lawsuit." Vaive was one of the 10 players named in the original concussion lawsuit, a list that has grown to more than 200, according to lawyers Steve Silverman and Mel Owens, who are at the forefront of the suit. The other nine original players were Gary Leeman, Bradley Aitken, Darren Banks, Curt Bennett, Richard Dunn, Warren Holmes, Robert Manno, Blair James Stewart, and Morris Titanic. Former New York Islanders centre Bob Bourne announced he joined the suit shortly after it was filed. TORONTO - The IIHF said Hockey Canada was responsible for the ticket prices that may have led to empty seats at Montreals Bell Centre for preliminary games at the world junior championship.Face-value tickets for games in Montreal started at $71 and ranged to $336 for the New Years Eve game between Canada and the United States, which drew 18,295 fans. Just 14,142 fans were in attendance for Canadas opening game against Slovakia on Boxing Day.The capacity of Bell Centre is 21,273.Tickets for Canadas first three round-robin games (against Slovakia, Germany and Finland) ranged from $66 to $261.I was really surprised, IIHF president Rene Fasel said at a news conference Sunday. If you would do this pricing in Europe, you would have nobody in the arena. The average NHL ticket price is in the $65 range. Face-value single-game tickets for the Canadiens next home game Jan. 6 against the Tampa Bay Lightning range from $27 in the family zone to $275 in the platinum level. The Canadiens play just above capacity and are second in the league in attendance with an average of 21,286 fans a game.Fasel wondered if marketing and the economy in Montreal played a role in the world junior attendance problems. He conceded not personally knowing what the ticket value should be but added, Hockey Canada decides the prices of the tickets, not us.In raising concern about crowds at Bell Centre, which are usually sellouts for Canadiens games, Fasel pointed out that this would finish as the third-most-attended world junior championship in history behind Ottawa (2009) and Edmonton and Calgary (2012).Fasel said he expects the 2015 tournament post a total attendance between 365,000 and 385,000. There were 453,000 in Ottawa and 444,000 in Edmonton and Calgary. So its not too bad, really, Fasel said. Its really a nice problem to discuss.Hockey Canada has said it will not comment on this matter until after the tournament, which wraps up Monday with the bronze- and gold-medal games at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Canada played Slovakia on Sunday night in the semifinals. The 2015 world junior championship featured Canada playing its round-robin games in Montreal and knockout rounds in Toronto. There were 18,448 people in Air Canada Centre Friday night when Canada faced Denmark in the quarter-finals.Packages for all 19 games in Toronto ranged from $626 to $1,746, and although attendance was not high for non-Canada preliminary games, the expectation was for Canadas games to draw well. Fasel said the average attendance in Toronto would be around 14,000 without Canada for the early games and between 9,720 and 15,000 for Montreal. The packages for 13 games in Montreal ranged from $431 to $1,191.Maybe we had really high expectations in Montreal, Fasel said. I think we will find a solution with Hockey Canada and the IIHF to get a great event in 2017.The 2017 tournament is scheduled to have Canadas round-robin games in Toronto and the knockout rounds in Montreal. Asked about moving some games to Quebec City or staging all games in Toronto, Fasel did not rule anything out.Everything will be evaluated in the next few months, Fasel said.IIHF council member Frank Gonzalez, the tournament chairman, said the organizations would have to discuss with partners and sponsors before making any decisions about altering the plan for 2017.Im hoping that we dont have to move out of Montreal, Gonzalez said. I think its a great city for hockey as Rene has mentioned and we would love to go back there. Its just that the numbers this time did not accompany what we thought or what we expected would be the same as in Toronto. We have to find what was the cost and maybe fix that and then come back to Montreal and see if we can fix it and move forward in Montreal in 2017. If not we will have to look at other options, of course.---Follow @SWhyno on Twitter Tyrod Taylor Jersey . LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Washington Wizards are in a great position to make the playoffs for the first time in six years, and John Wall has a lot to do with it. Wall had 28 points and 14 assists, leading the Wizards to a heated 117-107 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night. "Hes a competitor that comes every night," coach Randy Wittman said. "Hes obviously a big part that gets our engine running. So I want him to understand how important he is in continuing that." The Wizards are having their best season since 2007-08, when they ended a string of four consecutive playoff berths. Theyve already surpassed last seasons win total by seven with 13 games remaining, and are sixth in the Eastern Conference, with a seven-game lead over the New York Knicks for the final playoff seed. "The difference this year is just trusting each other," Wall said. "This is a group that enjoys playing with each other, and we know the one thing we can do is play hard for 48 minutes and trust any guy down the stretch. I give a lot of credit to our organization and our coaches for helping our second unit improve." Washington (36-33) is one of only six teams in their conference with a winning record. But if they were in the West, they would be in 10th place — 4 1/2 games out of contention. "Im glad Im in the East," Wall said with a grin. "But we still havent solidified a playoff spot, so we knew we had to get back on the right track — pushing the ball and playing team defence. When we get stagnant, we dont play great and lose a lot of games like that. So it was great to get to come back tonight and get back on the winning track." Bradley Beal added 18 points for the Wizards, who began this four-game western trip with back-to-back losses to Sacramento and Portland. Nene sat out his 13th in a row with a sprained left knee, but Marcin Gortat returned to the lineup with 13 points and 13 rebounds in 34 minutes after missing his first game of the season because of pain in his lower back. "Kudos to our guys and their connections out here on the coast to get him some treatment," Wittman said. "Last night we thought he was day-to-day, but he got here and he said: You know what? I feel pretty good. I wasnt anticipating that, but it was a pleasant surprise." Tempers flared with 2:14 remaining and the Wizards ahead 108-98, as Jordan Hill and Nick Young got into a scuffle with Gooden after a battle for a loose ball. Referees Scott Foster, Mark Ayotte and Nick Buchert went to the video monitor at the scorers table review, and Gooden was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and was ejected. So was Hill, who received a technical foul. Young also got a technical, but stayed in the game. Young and Jodie Meeks each scored 21 points for the injury-jinxed Lakers, who welcomed Young, Hill and Steve Nash back into the mix and had 12 players in uniform for the first time since March 4. Coach Mike DAntoni, unable to play Wesley Johnson because of an upper-respiratory infection, used his 30th different starting lineup with Robert Sacre at centre and Pau Gasol shifting to power forward alongside newcomer Kent Bazemore. Gasol had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Nash, who sat out the previous 15 games because of chronic nerve damage in his back that has limited him to 11 appearances all season, had 11 assists and five points in 19 minutes off the bench. On March 13, following an individual workout by Nash at Oklahoma City, DAntoni told the media that the two-time MVP was done for the season. But when Jordan Farmar was sidelined by a groin strain, all bets were off. "Steve always kept in shape," DAntoni said. "He wanted to play and he was getting there, so it made sense to go ahead and get him in there." Young sat out the previous 11 games and 17 of 18 with a sore left knee, and Hill was sidelined for eight games due to a sore right knee. All three of the returning Lakers ended up on the court at the same time when Nash and Hill reported in with 3:26 left in the first quarter and Los Angeles trailing 24-12. Trevor Bookers short running jumper gave the Wizards their biggest lead, 72-51, with 7:22 left in the third quarter. Nash reported back in with 3:44 left in the period and orchestrated an 18-7 Lakers run that included seven points by Sacre, whose dunk with 3.3 seconds on the clock narrowed the gap to 88-81. The Grizzlies have won three in a row and three straight at home. They swept a two-game road trip against the Brooklyn Nets and Orlando Magic, including a 106-96 victory Friday night in Orlando. Jeff Green made his presence known in his second game with the Grizzlies, scoring 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead Memphis. Green, acquired in three-team deal on Monday, threw down a thunderous dunk over Victor Oladipo in the third quarter and added two more slams after the Magic cut their deficit to four down the stretch. Hes learning how to play off other guys, said Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger. Hes a really good cutter ... thats kind of where he made his money tonight. All five Memphis starters finished in double figures. Marc Gasol filled the stat sheet with 12 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists, while Zach Randolph chipped in with 18 points and 12 boards. Tony Allen had 17 and Beno Udrih, starting in place of Mike Conley, finished with 15. Orlando cut the deficit to four with under two minutes to play, but Green answered with a slam off a nice pass from Gasol, and after Orlandos Elfrid Payton missed from long range, Green went baseline on Oladipo for a second time and finished it with anotther dunk to all but seal the win.dddddddddddd Conley has two sprained ankles and theres no timetable for his return. Fridays game was his first missed contest of the season. The Blazers have dropped two straight and the slide started Wednesday at home against the Los Angeles Clippers. They opened a brutal weekend road trip with a 110-96 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Friday. Portland couldnt handle the returning Kawhi Leonard, who scored 20 points in his first action since a 15-game absence with a hand injury. LaMarcus Aldridge tallied 24 points with eight rebounds and Damian Lillard, who scored 43 points in the 129-119 triple overtime win on Dec. 19, went for 23 points and five assists in this one. We didnt do a good job keeping them off the boards, said Aldridge. We didnt do a good job of finding bodies. Well learn from it. San Antonio held a 49-32 edge on the glass and the Blazers only compiled 20 assists. Portland did shoot 50 percent from the field. C.J. McCollum chipped in 17 off the bench and Meyers Leonard added 12 for the second unit. The Grizzlies defeated the Blazers by 13 in Portland on Nov. 28 and have taken six of the last seven in this series. The Grizzlies are 4-1 in their last versus the Blazers in Memphis. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Panthers coach Ron Rivera still isnt sure wholl protect quarterback Cam Newtons blindside this season. But he doesnt seem overly worried. The Panthers have been searching for a replacement for longtime left tackle Jordan Gross, who retired earlier this off-season. Byron Bell, last years starting right tackle, and Nate Chandler, a converted defensive tackle, have been working as the starting tackles during OTAs. Theyve been flip-flopping from left to right tackle, depending on the day. Neither has played left tackle before in the NFL. Rivera said veteran Garry Williams, who is coming off a knee injury, could also figure into the mix once healthy. "Weve not decided on a lot of positions yet," Rivera said. "The biggest thing we have right now is competition and guys working. ... Well see how we are once we get into training camp." Newton hasnt participated in OTAs except to throw on the side. He said he could be ready for minicamp next week, but at the very least should be completely healthy when training camp begins July 24. "Come game time, its no doubt in my mind that every single person will be ready to go. That is what OTAs and minicamp are designed for -- to get these guys prepared, to get myself prepared," Newton said. "When that ball is snapped I have full confidence in Nate Chandler and Byron Bell that they will get the job done." While many teams invest millions in protecting their quarterbacks blindside, the Panthers seem to be taking a chance with lower-priced players who havent played the position. Bell and Chandler will make a combined $2.6 million this season. Both players insist they dont have a preference on which position they play. "Were both getting an equal opportunity to win a job, which is nice," Chandler said. Said Bell: "I really dont care. Either position, wherever coach sees being the best fit for either one of us is fine. Im just trying to win football games. If that means left tackle, right tackle or on the bench, wherever the team needs me is fine." Filling Gross shoes wont be easy. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Gross started 167 games during his 10 seasons with the Panthers and was a member of the Super Bowl team as a rookie in 2003. The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Chandler is an intriguing story. He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012 out of UCLA. He started his career with the Bruins as an offensive lineman, but later moved to tight end as a sophomore and then to defensive tackle for his final two seasons. When he arrived in Carolina he saw spot duty at defensive tackle a rookie, playing in 10 games with five tackles in 2012. But coaches thought with Chandlers combination of quickness and size he might be more valuable on the offensive line, so they moved him there last year in training camp. Chandler started eight games in 2013 -- six at right guard and two at right tackle -- due to injuries. Bell was also undrafted. He came out of New Mexico in 2011 and was thrust in the mix as a rookie. Hes started 41 games over the past three seasons for Carolina -- all but one of those at right tackle. "Im left handed, so Ill feel comfortable over there," said Bell, who started three years at left tackle at New Mexico. "But if it is right tackle, Im certainly fine over there. "The big thing is we as an offensive line have to do is go in with the mindset that we have to keep No. 1 (Newton) upright. And if you have a bad play, you have to forget about and move on the next one because that (pass rusher) will be coming again." P.J. Hall Raiders Jersey . Tahir Whitehead Raiders Jersey . -- Ryan Millers debut for the St.PHILADELPHIA -- LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson are quite the dynamic duo. Both players are thriving in Chip Kellys offence, helping the Philadelphia Eagles put up prolific numbers through two games. McCoy leads the NFL with 237 yards rushing and Jackson is first with 297 yards receiving. Together, theyve combined for more yards (653) than nine different teams. "With the type of offence we have I dont think moving the ball is an issue," McCoy said. McCoy, a 2011 All-Pro, ran for 184 yards in a win over Washington in Week 1. He was held to 53 in a loss to the Chargers on Sunday, but he caught five passes for a career-best 114 yards. Jackson, a two-time Pro Bowl pick, followed up a 104-yard performance in the opener with 197 yards receiving vs. San Diego. The Chargers focused on stopping the run, so the Eagles turned to their air attack. Michael Vick threw for a career-high 428 yards in a 33-30 loss. "Teams have to pick and choose their poison," Jackson said Tuesday. "We have great balance. If they want to take something from us, we always have another option. Coming into each game, we really dont know how any team is going to play us. We watch film and things like that, but the majority of the time when we go into a game, things kind of change up. Teams like to do different things to us because of McCoy, myself and Vick. Were prepared, we watch film, and we know what their tendencies are." McCoy showed off his versatility by coming out of the backfield to make big catches, giving defences more to worry about. McCoy creates matchup problems as a receiver, so thats just another option for Kelly to use in his fast-paced offence. "I think when you try to take me out of the game, you think of running, but I can be effective in the passing game," McCoy said. "We try to give me a one-on-one matchup with anybody from a safety to a linebacker. I think thhis offence is amazing, so many different ways to get playmakers in space so we are going to see a lot of different things this year.dddddddddddd" After a dismal season last year when the Eagles finished 4-12, McCoy and Jackson seem rejuvenated in Kellys system. Theres no telling what theyll do if they stay healthy and get more experience in Kellys offence. After all, its only two games in and theres room for improvement. "I think we can go a little faster," McCoy said. "I think we can convert a little better. I think sometimes we get those phases in the game no matter if its earlier or late, where we kind of move the ball but then dont get any points. Once we get past that, I think well be fine." Jackson had a 61-yard touchdown catch against the Chargers, but was open on three other deep balls. Vick overthrew one, Jackson let one bounce off his fingers and caught one out of bounds. If they connected on any of those three, the Eagles could be 2-0 instead of 1-1. "You miss one, you hit one," Vick said. "We had one that was close, but you just have to keep firing until you get one. You are not going to hit them all. We wish we could. Next week you may hit them all. It all depends." The Eagles face former coach Andy Reid and the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs (2-0) on Thursday night. The Chiefs already have matched their win total from 2012 and will be looking to win a game thats significant to their new coach. Defensive co-ordinator Bob Sutton obviously has to devise a plan to stop Philadelphias high-powered offence. Will he try San Diegos approach? "How do you stop the Eagles offence?" McCoy said. "What do you want to do? Do you want to try to stack the box and completely take away the running game out of the game? That happens and (we) wind up with 400 yards passing." Itll be a conundrum for opponents all year. SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Mike Iupati sustained a sprained ligament in his left knee Sunday at New Orleans and it isnt considered to be season-ending, a person with direct knowledge of the injury said Wednesday. An MRI this week revealed the sprained medial collateral ligament, and Iupati isnt expected to need surgery, the person said, requesting anonymity because the 49ers didnt reveal specifics on what happened to Iupati. He walked to the sideline with assistance in the third quarter of a 23-20 loss at the Superdome and then was carted off to the locker room. The injury happened when running back Frank Gore got tackled into the back of Iupatis left leg. The 26-year-old Iupati, a staple in San Franciscos veteran, much-improved O-line, has started every game since the 49ers selected him 17th in the 2010 NFL draft out of Idaho. That run would end if he isnt able to play Monday night at Washington. "I dont know the timetable or how much time he might miss," the person said. "Im not sure Mike knows. Theyre still evaluating him." Iupati wasnt in the locker room during the portion open to reporters Wednesday, when the reigning NFC champion Niners (6-4) cancelled a scheduled walk-through because of a downpour and moved their preparations for the Redskins indoors. Coach Jim Harbaugh will next address the media Thursday. Adam Snyder, who didnt speak to reporters, would be the likely substitute to replace Iupati. "Mikes a great player, a Pro Bowl player," running back Frank Gore said Wednesday. "He helps out our running game a lot, but Snyder is a vet player. Hes been playing since he was a rookie. Hell be fine. But we will miss Mike. I think Snyder can come in and play." Nike Shoes From China . The start of the seasons fifth and final major was delayed two hours due to heavy rain in the area. Carmelo Anthony had previously said he planned to opt out of his contract with the New York Knicks and reportedly will do just that on Monday. Anthony has a June 23 deadline to make that decision and Yahoo Sports cited a source in a report Sunday that said the seven-time All-Star will notify the Knicks of his intention to exercise that right and become a free agent. The 30-year-old veteran, in past comments, said he wouldnt rule out a return to the Knicks, adding that he just wanted to test the market. Teams reportedly interested in Anthony include the Chicago Bulls and Houston Rockets. The Knicks, however, can offer Anthony the most money and longest contract. New Knicks president Phil Jackson, however, has indicated that he would like Anthony to take less money in an effort to rebuild a team that missed the playoffs in 2013-14. Anthony averaged 27.4 points, a career-high 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 77 games for the Knicks this past season. He sat out the final two games with a shoulder injury once the Knicks were eliminated from postseason contention. In three-plus seasons since joining the Knicks in a February 2011 trade from Denver, Anthony has averaged 26.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists. The Syracuse product has career averages of 25.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 790 games with the Nuggets and Knicks. Cheap Basketball Shoes Free Shipping . For the Atlanta Braves, it was another night of missed chances. Matt Carpenters two-run double that helped carry St. Louis past the slumping Braves, who shook up their lineup but still lost their seventh in a row, 4-3 on Monday. The Cardinals scored three runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of shaky defence by Atlantas Gold Glove shortstop. In fact, Simmons had a couple of plays that couldve been scored errors but were initially ruled hits. The second one was changed to an E-6 and turned out to be especially costly, leading to a pair of unearned runs. St. Louis built a 4-0 lead and barely held on to win the series opener. "It was big," Carpenter said. "Especially when we got out to a big lead, to be able to hold them off, that was big for us." Desperate for more offence, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez batted pitcher Aaron Harang eighth and put second baseman Ramiro Pena in the ninth spot. Pena had two hits, including a seventh-inning homer that brought the Braves within a run, but they couldnt overcome a 4-0 deficit. Juston Upton took a called third strike from Trevor Rosenthal to end the game with the potential tying run at second base -- Uptons fourth strikeout of the night and extending Atlantas woes with runners in scoring position. The Braves were 1 for 12 in those situations and are 6 of 51 during their losing streak, though Freddie Freeman saw some encouraging signs. "We hit some balls hard with runners on," he said. "We were in the game the whole game. We couldnt say that the past week." The last time the Braves had such a lengthy skid was May 21-28, 2012, when they dropped eight in a row. Their longest losing streak last season was four straight. Shelby Miller (4-2) got a shaky win, giving up six hits and two runs in five-plus innings. Trevor Rosenthal pitched out of trouble for his ninth save, giving up a leadoff single to Simmons. Jordan Schafer bunted the runner to second, but Pena flied out to right before Upton whiffed. Harang (3-3) took the loss, though he pitched much betteer than his previous start, when he was pounded for nine runs by the Marlins.ddddddddddddThis time, he gave up four runs in six innings but only two were earned. The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Peter Bourjos led off with a single before Mark Ellis grounded one off Simmons glove. The shortstop, looking to make a force at second, appeared to take his eyes off the ball as it skipped past him. After Miller bunted the runners to second and third, Carpenter doubled to right-centre to bring them both in. Matt Holiday followed with a hard liner past third baseman Chris Johnson to make it 3-0. "Those things happen," Harang said of Simmons error. "I told him not to be too hard on himself. Hes probably going to save my butt plenty of times this year." St. Louis added another run in the fifth on Bourjos RBI single, but Gonzalez challenged a call at third base that had seemingly given the Cardinals a 5-0 lead. Yadier Molinas bases-loaded grounder ricocheted off Harangs leg, right to Johnson at third. He caught it and blindly stepped back in search of the bag and managed to barely nick it, as the replay showed. The called was quickly overturned after a review of only 37 seconds. The Braves knocked out Miller in the bottom half of the sixth, the first three hitters reaching safely. The Cardinals went to the bullpen after Evan Gattis RBI single, and B.J. Upton followed with a sacrifice fly off Pat Neshek. Neshek escaped the jam by striking out Simmons. NOTES: The Cardinals sent pitcher RHP Joe Kelly back to St. Louis to continue his rehab from a strained left hamstring. "Joe just wasnt to the point where they thought they could push him, so keeping him around the rest of this road trip didnt make any sense," general manager John Mozeliak said. "I dont know Id call it a setback as much as he just wasnt progressing as quickly as we wanted." ... Atlanta RHP Gavin Floyd will make his season debut when he starts Tuesday against LHP Tyler Lyons (0-2) of the Cardinals.
