BEREA, Ohio -- A day of celebration dissolved into confusion for the Browns. Hours after quarterback Johnny Manziels arrival had Clevelands football pulse racing faster than it had in years, a report that star wide receiver Josh Gordon may be facing an indefinite suspension shattered the citys collective joy. As the second round of the NFL draft was set to open Friday, ESPN reported that Gordon, who led the NFL in yards receiving last season, had failed another drug test for marijuana and could be banned for a year. The ESPN report, based on anonymous sources, described letters the Pro Bowler received about the failed test. The Browns deferred any comment on Gordons situation to the league office. Gordons agent, Drew Rosenhaus, declined comment. Gordon was suspended without pay for the first two games last season for violating the leagues substance abuse policy for the second time, but still led the league with 1,646 yards receiving in 14 games. He had 87 catches and nine touchdowns. Gordon, who was taken in the 2012 supplemental draft, entered the league with a history of substance issues. He was excused from Baylors team for twice failing drug tests and he also failed a test after transferring to Utah. The Browns have been pleased with the easygoing Gordons maturity and his off-the-field progress. The team had the 23-year-old involved in many of their off-season activities this winter, including him in meetings with free agents and keeping him apprised of their plans. At last weeks voluntary mini-camp, first-year Browns coach Mike Pettine praised Gordon for his game-breaking abilities and his willingness to accept his role with the team. Gordon spoke to a small group of reporters away from the TV cameras and said he was pleased to be so entwined in the teams off-season regimen. "It was actually big. I was surprised by it," Gordon said. "It was good to have that camaraderie, we never really had that before. Nobody really tried to instil that in this group, but hopefully that brings us all together." Gordon was expected to be the top playmaker for either Manziel or incumbent starter Brian Hoyer. Its not known if the Browns were aware of Gordons possible ban before Thursdays opening round, when they traded out of the No. 4, sending that pick to Buffalo for the No. 9 pick and a first- and fourth-rounder in 2015. Buffalo used the fourth selection on Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins. If Gordon is suspended, the Browns are in big trouble at wide receiver. Greg Little and Nate Burleson would be the most experienced players at the position with newly signed Andrew Hawkins at the slot position. The Browns were expected to address their depth at receiver before the report on Gordon surfaced. But Cleveland went in a different direction in the second round, taking Nevada tackle Joel Bitonio with the No. 35 overall pick. At 6-foot-4, 302 pounds, Bitonio can also play guard and has been described as "nasty." "I like to play hard," he said. "Football is played to the whistle and you have to play as hard as you can every snap. If you can play that hard every play, then theres a good chance that if youre equally talented and use your technique well, youll be able to beat the guy youre going against. I want to play as hard as I possibly can. I know the AFC North is a tough, hard-nosed division, and I hope I can a little bit of that to the team." Nate Hairston Jersey . Red Wings forward Johan Franzen had been scheduled to play on a line with newcomers Daniel Alfredsson and Stephen Weiss, but missed the game due to a sore hip flexor. "I was so nervous," Hadley said Sunday after winning the Puerto Rico Open for his first PGA Tour victory. "I did not eat well last night.PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Being a fan who had never seen a pro golf event in person, the PGA Championship sure was a sweet way to start. I had tickets to Fridays second round for the better part of a year and traveled to Oak Hill Country Club with the simple goal of soaking it all in - see the course, watch the players up close, and hopefully, see Tiger and Phil in person.  How did I do? Ten things come to mind. 1. Rain, baby. Despite rain never being in the forecast it had started overnight and was in full downpour mode when we arrived at the course at about 9am. Luckily play was never delayed but the deluge was pretty consistent for about three hours. It didnt take long for the gallery areas around Oak Hill to become mudpits - it wasnt very country club-like, but at least I wore old (and comfortable) shoes. 2. Major Sighting. We entered the course through a gate near the 11th hole. As we found our bearings and walked to the 12th, I cashed in on one of my goals right away - the years major winners were playing through. The pairing of British Open winner Phil Mickelson, U.S. Open winner Justin Rose and Masters champion Adam Scott had a huge gallery following them and there was electricity in the crowd as each hit their approach shots. 3. Seriously, no photos. The spectator guide that was sent to us said that taking photos was not allowed. And yet, cellphone calls and texting from the course was allowed in designated areas. So I figured that people would be trying to sneak shots here and there when they could. Well guess what? There were staff at the course in green marshal shirts marked "Mobile Device Enforcement" scanning the crowds for those brave enough to try. And it worked. I heard "Put it away, please" several times. Seriously, no photos. 4. The Range.  Having seen the Canadian Open several times, my travel mates swore that this was the place to be to get the best up-close look at the players. And boy were they right. While the crowds on the course were four and five-deep trying to track approach shots, the practice area was relatively lightly attended. But it was truly something to see. In the space of about 90 minutes we saw Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Brandt Snedeker, Luke Donald, Steve Stricker, Davis Love III, and many more.  Matt Kuchar and Padraig Harrington walked right past me to an elevated tee area.  Martin Kaymer launched rockets alongside fellow former PGA champions Rich Beem and Shaun Micheel. And later, Miguel Angel Jimenez showed up after his round smoking his trademark cigar. Fantastic. 5. "These guys are good".  Thats an old PGA Tour ad promo but its absolutely true. Watching these guys hit in person shows why they are the best in the world. Players start with sand wedges and hit short bounce-bounce-stop shots that are nothing short of trickery. Bounce-bounce-stop. One after another. Irons are hit for accuracy, distance, and with unbelievable arc. Drivers are belted so far that you lose track of them for a second or two before they re-appear on a bounce more than 300 yards away. Thats the part you cant truly appreciate on television. 6.  TThe Dufner Dips.dddddddddddd Ten guys from Ottawa made the trip with bright red custom-made t-shirts and called themselves the Dufner Dips. Their goal was to find fan favourite Jason Dufner and give him his own red shirt for luck. For the thousands of fans who attended, they were the only ones I saw all day who dressed alike in support of a player. I stood next to them on the range while they did interview after interview with the media. One fellow said they had been interviewed nine times that day. When Dufner appeared at the other end of the range they went to track him down - I can only imagine he was thrilled to accept their gift. 7. Out of the sky. Walking the par-4 10th hole, a golf ball, literally, dropped out of the sky in front of us. Sergio Garcia had whipped his tee shot right and into the trees - it hit a branch above us and fell into the muddy gallery area. We never even heard "fore!". We circled the ball and Garcia showed up minutes later to take stock of the situation. He summoned a rules official, who determined that Garcia could take relief of one club because the ball lay in "damaged grounds" because of the gallery. After taking a drop he asked us to remain "very quiet please", then calmly hit an iron off the mud, over the trees in front and up near the green. Unbelievable shot. From there he got up and down to save an unlikely par. And it all happened from about six feet in front of me. 8. Ticket Envy. All spectators at the event were asked to wear their hanging tickets at all times. Mine said "Grounds" but I quickly learned that there were plenty of other kinds. "Wannamaker Club" looked good. "Clubhouse" was pretty solid. But I have to admit that "Mercedes Box" or "American Express Club" had me at hello. Still, "Grounds" got me around the course just fine. But without free snacks. 9. Parking. Several homes around the course were selling lawn space for fans to park on. And these were not small homes - they were beautiful houses with massive lawns. We parked on a lawn for $30 that could probably accommodate 30 cars. Quick calculation: $900 per day for four days, $3,600 plus whatever they made earlier in the week for the practice rounds. Sweet gig - too bad the PGA is played at Oak Hill only every decade or so. 10. Ah yes, Tiger Woods. The worlds No. 1 golfer arrived about an hour before his tee time and you could hear the buzz in the crowd before you saw the man. He did an interview and then proceeded to the practice area, where I was able to watch him hit for about a half hour from 50 feet away. He was hitting alongside Love and Stewart Cink, but to the gallery the two former major winners were practically invisible. Tiger didnt say a word. He barely acknowledged the crowd. He was dialed in, preparing for his round. I watched him hit drive after drive, thinking about all the things that have made him one of the biggest celebrities on the planet. Was I star struck? I have to admit that I was. And from 50 feet away, I could only think about how I was fortunate to cross off one of the bucket list moments of just about any golf fan - to see Tiger live. CORTINA DAMPEZZO, Italy - Canadian Larisa Yurkiws self-funded team of one is starting to pay off.The native of Owen Sound, Ont., finished second in a World Cup downhill Friday for her first career podium result — an achievement that Yurkiw has had to work harder for than most skiers at this level.Thats because Alpine Canada dropped its money-draining womens downhill team two years ago, prompting the 26-year-old Yurkiw to strike out on her own, hire a full-time coach and gather sponsors to support travel and training. For this season alone, Yurkiw raised $250,000.We just dont have so much depth in Canada in womens speed racing, so they dont have a speed team, Yurkiw said. This is my baby and my passion, so I figured out a way to make it happen for myself. Its been amazing. Its one of those situations that you dont ask for but its been a big education. Its definitely shown me what Im made of.While Yurkiw still races in the Canadian teams yellow and red uniform, thats practically her only connection to the federation these days. Once she reaches the finish area, she dons her aqua-green Team Larisa jacket covered with patches from her sponsors. Those sponsors, led by helmet sponsor and foreign exchange company Cresco FX, got plenty of visibility Friday as Yurkiw took advantage of an early start number on a shortened course in thick fog and low visibility to finish 0.15 seconds behind winner Elena Fanchini of Italy. At one point you have to be lucky, Yurkiw said.Yurkiw has had her share of bad luck, like when she tore up her left leg in a December, 2009 crash and missed her home Vancouver Olympics two months later. In all, she sat out two years of World Cup races.Yurkiw started her personal team last season and qualified for the Sochi Olympics, where she placed 20th in downhill. She opened this season by finishing fourth in a downhill on home snow in Lake Louise, Alberta, last month, and is now sixth in the downhill standings. Her coach, Kurt Mayr, once worked with Austrian downhill legend Renate Goetschl. My coach is a jack of all trades, Yurkiw said. We get pretty creative on how to be efficient and creative and make it work for the most success possible. That involves training and sharing course reports with the Swedish, Norwegian and German teams.I call myself Team Larisa, Yurkiw said. But its an umbrella of a lot of peoples energy and effort.Andrew Dampf can be followed at www.twitter.com/asdampf Josh Bynes Jersey . -- Stanley Johnson scored all 18 of his points in the second half, T. NFL owners filed an unfair labour charge against the players union in February, arguing that the union was not negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement in good faith.Moritz Boehringer was the feel-good story of the 2016 NFL Draft but as far as his new coach Mike Zimmer is concerned, the German’s time in the limelight is at an end for the foreseeable future. The 22-year-old made history last Saturday as he became the first player ever to be drafted straight from Europe when the Minnesota Vikings took him in the sixth round.Boehringer, whom Minnesota initially scouted through his YouTube highlight clips, became interested in American football when he saw a clip of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. Minnesota Vikings make history by selecting German wide receiver Boehringer in the sixth round On Monday, Boehringer became the first 2016 draft pick to sign his contract when he inked a four-year, $2.49m contract with a signing bonus of $150,420.The Vikings got his deal done as quickly as possible to provide extra time for Boehringer to get a work visa, and he was cleared in time to practice Friday. That practice was a welcome to the NFL moment for Boehringer as he got sick several times in the blistering Minnesota heat.Boehringers transition from the German leagues to the NFL is unprecedented and Zimmer knows he has a mammoth task in front of him to learn what it takes - both on and off the field - to be an NFL wide receiver. Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer is known for his no-nonsense approach I want to kind of end the story, to be honest with you, Zimmer said. I want him to be here playing football and not being a celebrity.Ive given him a hard time already about being on TV shows and stuff like that. Its football now, and its time to work. The feel-good story is over.Boehringer was met by a large crowd of curious reporters as he walked off the field after his first rookie mini-camp practice and he admitted there is a big learning curve in front of hhim.ddddddddddddYou definitely have to get used to the speed, Boehringer said. There is a lot more tempo. But it was the first day so they explained some stuff to me and it was okay. The offence is new to everyone so that is good for me but in general football knowledge I have to do some work.I just have to concentrate on football right now. I want to get better and just try to show what I can do.When Boehringer wasnt getting sick on the side of the field, he had some good moments in practice which didnt go unnoticed by Zimmer. From what I saw today, hes a pretty good athlete, Zimmer said. Obviously, hes going to have to learn. The biggest thing for these guys is learning terminology. Thats hard right from the start, but thats not any different from him or anybody else. Highlights of the first round of the NFL draft, where Jared Goff was the first pick, going to the Los Angeles Rams. There is no doubt Boehringer is a project who is unlikely to be much of a factor during the 2016 season but the reason the Vikings were so intrigued by his potential is his extremely rare athleticism. At his pro day in Florida before the draft, the 6ft 4in, 227-pound Boehringer ran the 40-yard dash in 4.43 seconds, had a vertical jump of 39 inches, a 10-foot-11 broad jump, a time of 4.10 seconds in the short shuttle, a time of 11.15 seconds in the 60-yard shuttle and a time of 6.65 seconds in the three-cone drill. He also bench-pressed 225 pounds 17 times. All performances would have placed in the top five among receivers at the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine. We were very intrigued with his potential and his upside because you cant find that size, that speed and all the athletic test numbers that he had, general manager Rick Spielman said. Now the hard part of turning all that potential into production begins for Boehringer and the Vikings. One of the NHLs longest-serving team executives could be stepping down at seasons end, as the Raleigh News-Observer reports that Jim Rutherford is expected to give up his duties as general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes. Rutherford, who serves as president and general manager of the Hurricanes, told the paper on Monday that he didnt want to comment on his status with the team or any potential changes until the season is over. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger adds that Rutherford will meet with Peter Karmanos at the end of the season before any final decision is made. Sources tell the News-Observer that Rutherford could remain as team president, while Hall of Famer and Hurricanes vice president of hockey operations Ron Francis could succeed Rutherford as general manager. Rutherford has been with the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes franchise since 1994 and led the team to its first Stanley Cup in 2006. ATLANTA -- Arizona manager Kirk Gibson was glad to leave town after a lost weekend at Turner Field. "They outpitched us, they outhit us and they just outplayed us," Gibson said. "Theyd been struggling, but they turned it around. Theyve played well at home." Trevor Cahill gave up home runs to Freddie Freeman, Dan Uggla and Brian McCann, and the Diamondbacks lost 6-2 Sunday as the Atlanta Braves completed a three-game sweep. Cahill (3-10) allowed six runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings as the NL West-leading Diamondbacks lost for the fifth time in six games. Cahill is 0-6 with a 7.91 ERA in eight starts since a May 17 win at Miami, but hes received only nine runs of support in his last eight games. The Diamondbacks went 3 for 21 with runners in scoring position over the weekend. Cahills rough outing marked the 22nd straight game without a win from the Diamondbacks rotation -- the longest streak in the majors since San Diego went 25 in a row from April 17-May 14, 2009, according to STATS. "I dont know what to say," Cahill said. "Its embarrassing. Were a team thats in first place, and I want to do my part to contribute. Its just not working out." Paul Maholm (9-6) gave up two runs and eight hits in 6 2-3 innings for the Braves, who lead the NL East by 6 1/2 games and improved to a big league-best 28-11 at home. The first of Paul Goldschmidts two run-scoring, double-play grounders put Arizona ahead in the first, but McCann tied the score in the second with an opposite-field homer that bounced off the top of the wall in left-centre. Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez was grateful to get through the weekend without any damage from Goldschmidt, who leads the NL with 67 RBIs but went 1 for 9 and stranded four runners in the series. "We did a nice job of minimizing the damage, pitching around him a little bit and getting him out," Gonzalez said. "Hes a hell of a player and having a grreat year, so we did a nice job of handling him.dddddddddddd" Freemans three-run homer made it 4-1 in the third, and Uggla added a two-run drive in the fifth, his 14th home run of the season, for a 6-1 lead. Maholm laboured in the seventh, giving up consecutive singles to Cody Ross and Gerardo Parra and a one-out walk to Cliff Pennington. Maholm struck out pinch-hitter Jason Kubel, and Anthony Varvaro relieved and retired A.J. Pollock on a flyout. Kubel began the game with a .417 average in 12 career at-bats against Maholm. "Hes done well against me, and its probably my last hitter," Maholm said. "I just tried to mix it up and dropped my arm angle on two of the pitches, but its left-on-left and I have all the confidence in getting a guy out." Gibson didnt have immediate answers for why his club is struggling on a trip that continues Monday with the opener of a four-game series at the New York Mets. "Its no one individual," Gibson said. "Its me, its the coaching staff, the players. Were just not clicking very good right now. Weve got to find a way to get it turned around. Its no fun. Im sure its not fun to watch, either. Were not going to panic either way. Were going to come in and try to be loose." NOTES: Cahill had not allowed three homers since Oaklands 10-2 loss at Toronto on April 30, 2010. ... SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Chargers must feel theyre living charmed lives these days. How else to explain that everything they needed to have happen -- and more -- fell into place to allow them to sneak into the playoffs for the first time in four years? "It feels like this season is meant to be special," Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle said after another epic, heart-stopping win against the Kansas City Chiefs, 27-24 in overtime on Sunday, gave the Chargers the AFCs final post-season spot. "Whether it happens or not, well read that story at the end. But were in, and no one really thought that could happen." Nick Novak kicked a 36-yard field goal with 5:30 left in overtime to give San Diego its only lead of the day. The Chargers, who trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter, then held the Chiefs on downs to win it after they got into San Diego territory. "We didnt play our best game, but teams that are playoff teams find a way to win when you dont play your best and thats what we did today," quarterback Philip Rivers said after the Chargers (9-7) won their fourth straight and for the fifth time in six games. Theyll play a wild-card game next Sunday at AFC North champion Cincinnati, the last team to beat them, 17-10 at San Diego on Dec. 1. The Chargers have needed help from other teams for weeks. Everything worked out for them on Sunday, but not before the Chargers and their fans had to squirm a bit. Miami and Baltimore both lost, meaning San Diego could clinch the No. 6 seed with a win or tie. Surprisingly, the Chargers trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter against a Chiefs team that already had clinched the AFCs No. 5 seed and rested 20 of 22 starters, including Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles and quarterback Alex Smith. The Chargers kept getting new chances. After San Diego tied it by scoring 10 points on consecutive possessions, Kansas Citys Ryan Succop was wide right on a potential game-winning, 41-yard field goal try with 4 seconds left in regulation. "It was just kind of like we got a new life," Rivers said. "It was like, all right, we just got a second chance, because it was over. We were maybe going to get a snap offensively." The Chiefs called heads during the overtime coin toss, and it came up tails. The Chargers got the ball first and elected to receive. The drive was kept alive by a 2-yard gain by Weddle on a fake punt on fourth-and-2 from the Chargers 28. "I just felt we could get 2 yards as a punt team with me running the ball and if we are going to go down lets go down doing what we do best and that is being aggressive and fighting to the end," Weddle said. "And we just got enough and Im glad we got it." By having to settle for the field goal, the Chargers gave Kansas City an opportunity. Chase Daniel, starting for Smith, moved the Chiefs to a first-and-10 on the Chargers 36. But Knile Davis lost 5 yards, Daniel threw three straight incomplete passes and the game was over. "What a wild ride, all 16 games and it comes down to the last game," Weddle said. "A lot of people had us out but we stuck together in the locker room. Its the best team, morale, togetherness, that I have ever been a part of. "It didnt look great at times in that game and now we are in the tournament. We cant wait to go to Cincinnati." The Chiefs (11-5) go into the playoffs having lost five of seven. They play Saturday at AFC South champion Indianapolis, which won 23-7 in Kansas City last week. "I look at the positive of it," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of resting most of his starters. "We got a lot of guys in to get practice with the game plan if we do meet up with San Diego again. And the guys came out and played. You get to see, from a depth perspective, that youve got some guys who can play and want to compete." Said Davis: "We treated it just like any other game. It all comes down to us going out and doing our jobs. That was our mindset. Were hungry now." San Diego also beat the Chiefs 41-38 at Kansas City on Nov. 24. With the Chargers on the verge of an embarrassing collapse against a team with nothing to play for, Rivers threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Royal early in the fourth quarter and Novak kicked a 22-yard field goal to tie it with 3:21 left in regulation The Chiefs led 21-14 at halftime, getting touchdown runs of 17 and 2 yards by Davis and a 2-yard pass from Daniel to Dexter McCluster following an interception by Rivers. San Diego scored on Rivers passes of 22 yards to Ladarius Green and 4 yards to Antonio Gates. NOTES: San Diegos Ryan Mathews rushed 24 times for 144 yards, extending his career-best season total to 1,255. ... The Chargers allowed 143 yards rushing, with Davis getting 81 on 27 carries and Daniel 59 on seven carries. NEW YORK, N.Y. - The New York Rangers had just suffered a difficult loss to the Kings in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final, but coach Alain Vigneault didnt use the long plane ride home from Los Angeles to drill his players on how to get back into the series. Vigneault wanted the Rangers to rest and re-energize, and after a tiring start to the series the Kings had the same idea. "You shouldve seen the plane ride over here," Kings winger Justin Williams said. "It was all lights out and guys were sleeping." Kings coach Darryl Sutter voiced some concern about fatigue earlier in the series, but the true test is how these teams will react moving forward after two overtime games and then cross-country flights Sunday. Neither team practised on the day before Game 3 because rest is now at a premium. "I think the longer series go, the longer the playoffs go, (its about) courage, determination, extra effort," Sutter said. "Youre never going to feel fresh. Youre never going to feel as good as you did in November. Thats the way it works. Thats for sure. Theyre people." Williams doesnt consider fatigue a problem. For now. "Well be fine," he said. "Its the Cup finals, theres no excuse for not being ready or not being prepared or being tired. You can get yourself ready." Thats easier said than done after it took until midway through the second overtime before Dustin Brown finished off Game 2 to give Los Angeles a two games to none lead in the series. Despite Williams scoring 4:36 into overtime in Game 1, theres a build-up of extra hockey going on for the Kings. That was their third overtime game in a row. "Its pretty tough," Kings winger Marian Gaborik said. "To play this many periods the last three games, its a lot of hockey. But everyone will find the energy." The Rangers had a handful of days off after beating the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference final, but that doesnt mean players could immediately re-adjust to the time change by the time they took the ice at Madison Square Garden on Monday morning. Trying to explain the mood around the team, forward Brian Boyle noted that its still early in the morning. But he wasnt worried about being tired. "You just try and get your rest and plenty of fluids," Boyle said. "Its the same for probably everybody. Its an even playing field. So you just do your best." Even though it is an even playing field, it takes some work. "I think on the days off is where you take care of a lot of the physical fatigue, get as much liquids into you as possible and take a step back and relax a little bit," Kings forward Dwight King said Sunday at the team hotel. "As far as prepping for games, everybody has been in this situation long enough to know what they need to do to bring what they need to bring in order for our team to be successful. Defenceman Drew Doughty, who played a game-high 41:41 on Saturday night, has his own strategy. "Im the best couch-sitter in the world, so I make sure to do a lot of that," he said. Thats one way to physically re-charge. But 14 players in this series also participated in the Olympics, so the grind is no joke. "I think its my longest season ever," said Kings defenceman Slava Voynov, who played for Russia in Sochi. "But I feel like last season, a couple of years ago, same thing, its not big deal for me. Just try to play games." And there have been a lot of games. Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist has played 91, counting the Olympics. He thinks the bigger concern is the mental aspect of playing so many games, including the overtimes. "Physically we can all do it," Lundqvist said. "Its about how you recharge mentally. You have to make sure youre in the right place. No letdowns here." NOTES — Injured Rangers backup goaltender Cam Talbot did not skate Monday morning, and David LeNeveu is expected to continue serving in that role. Vigneault did not provide an update on Talbots status. ... Injured Kings defenceman Robyn Regehr, who hasnt played since May 3, continues to skate but his status is uncertain. Sutter said the team will continue to see what happens as warm-ups and games go on. Follow @SWhyno on Twitter Outlet Salomon Online . One of them was finding a bonafide starting quarterback in Drew Willy.I think Drew answered that pretty early in the year, said slotback Clarence Denmark, the teams leading receiver with 65 catches for 1,080 yards and three touchdowns. He grew into a guy that were going to trust and a guy that we believe in. I think Drew is a good player and hes only going to get better.Willy was picked up in the off-season in a trade with Saskatchewan after the Bombers attempts to sign veteran quarterback Henry Burris and up-and-comer Zach Collaros didnt pan out.Although he only had four starts in two seasons with Saskatchewan, Willy guided the Bombers to a surprising 5-1 start — even if four of those victories were against poor-playing East Division teams.Willys quiet, confident leadership continued as he played through some injuries and only missed one full game. He left Saturdays game in Calgary late in the first half with what he said was an injury to his forearm that weakened his grip on the ball.He was replaced by rookie Robert Marve, who guided the club to an 18-13 win over the Stampeders that snapped Winnipegs eight-game losing skid.Willy, who turns 28 later this month, planned to return home to New Jersey and train hard during the off-season.Im going to watch every (film) clip that we have, work on different things thatll improve my play, said Willy, who completed almost 64 per cent of his passes for 3,769 yards with 14 TDs and 16 interceptions. Its a big off-season for me and Im going to come back, I think, definitely in the best shape and best mental state that I can possibly be in.Head coach Mike OShea said everyones job performance will be under review, including his own, but the quarterbacking corps was a bright spot. You go into a season with what people would describe as relatively unknowns and (wondering) how its going to work out, OShea said.dddddddddddde feel weve got a very good quarterback stable. Brian Brohm, Robert Marve, Josh Portis and Drew Willy at the helm for the majority of the season. Its turned out well. That area has been addressed. The kicking game also more than met expectations.Rookie placekicker Lirim Hajrullahu was good on 40 of his 46 field-goal attempts, giving him a franchise-record 87 per cent success rate. He also tied the CFL rookie record that had been set by Justin Medlock in 2009.Im not fully satisfied because I still want to play, so no matter any accomplishments cant make up for not being in the playoffs, Hajrullahu said.He also took over the punting duties after Mike Renaud was injured and said hed like to do all the placekicking, punting and kickoffs next year. He told OShea that in his exit meeting and said the response was that hed come into training camp next year and compete. The Bombers have a big goal to strive for next year as Winnipeg is hosting the Grey Cup game, a championship they havent claimed since 1990.One area that will have to improve is Winnipegs defence, especially against the run. The team was at the bottom of the league in allowing an average of 135.9 rushing yards per game. The offensive line also needs work as Winnipeg gave up a league-high 71 sacks. Some Bombers pointed to a change in atmosphere as one of the biggest differences this season that made it fun to go to work, and work hard.I think heading into this season the focus was really changing the culture in the locker-room, said veteran offensive lineman Glenn January, one of the teams 16 potential free agents.I can tell you first-hand that mission was accomplished. And that was seen on the field, too.Just games that we were down, you could just see it, that we still had fight, Denmark said. No quit in these guys. I think that last game showed a lot of character about our team. Both players said the change began with OShea, a man who earned their respect. Its easy to go out and put it all on the line for a guy like that, Denmark said. Thats what its all about. Toronto, ON - Rob Blake, Peter Forsberg, Dominik Hasek and Mike Modano were among those inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday. Joining the four players in the 2014 class is the late Pat Burns, who was enshrined as a coach in the builder category, and referee Bill McCreary. Hasek played nine seasons professionally in the Czech League before making his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 1990-91 season. He was the backup to Ed Belfour, and played only 25 games over two seasons with the team. A 1992 trade to the Buffalo Sabres gave Hasek the opportunity to emerge as a starting goaltender. Hasek took on that role when Grant Fuhr went down with an injury. In 1994, he won his first of six Vezina Trophies as the leagues best goaltender. He also won the Hart Trophy as the leagues MVP in 1997 and 1998 -- the first time a goaltender had won that trophy since Jacques Plante in 1962. He earned the nickname The Dominator during his time with the Sabres. There were people who didnt like my style, but there were a lot of others who encouraged me to play the way that I did, said Hasek. The Sabres traded Hasek to the Detroit Red Wings prior to the start of the 2001-02 season. He played for the Red Wings from 2001-2008, where he won two championships (2002, 2008). In 735 NHL games, Hasek recorded 389 wins (11th place all-time), 223 losses, 82 ties to go along with 81 shutouts. My path here has been paved with kindness and support for a large number of people and I wish to thank them all, said Hasek. There were so many people who supported me and helped me become the player that I was. Forsberg joined the NHL after playing five seasons in the Swedish Elite league. He was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1991, but became part of the massive package used to acquire the rights to Eric Lindros from the Quebec Nordiques in 1992. In 708 career games over 14 seasons with the Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche, Flyers and Nashville Predators, Forsberg recorded 249 goals and 636 assists. A two-time Stanley Cup champion in 1996 and 2001 with Colorado, Forsberg also won the Hart Trophy in 2003. Forsberg also represented Sweden in international play, including four Olympic Winter Games, at which he won gold medals in 1994 and 2006. He joins Borje Salming and Mats Sundin as the only Swedes in the Hall of Fame. Im very proud to be the third Swede to be inducted, said Forsberg. Growing up I looked up to those guys and it makes me so happy to be included with those guys. It was always an honor to represent my country. Modano played primarily for the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars franchise, with whom he played 21 of his 22 NHL seasons. He holds the NHL record for most goals (561) and points (1,374) by an American-born player. Modano added 58 goals and 88 assists in 176 playoff games. He helped the Stars win the Stanley Cup in 1999. Its hard to put into words what it means to be in the same room as some of the greatest players the world has ever seen, said Modano. None of the great years would have been possible without the coaches and players I had the honor to play with. Blake had 240 goals and 537 assists in 1,270 games with the Kings, Avalanche and Sharks. He won the Norris Trophy in 1997-98 and the Stanley Cup in 2001 with Colorado. He also won gold with Canada at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. One of the things I took pride in throughout my career was being a good teammate, said Blake. Family, teammates and friends are always going to be there for you and a lot of the times I was playing for them. Burns started his 14-year NHL coaching career with the Montreal Canadiens in 1988 -- winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHLs Coach of the Year in his first season. He coached in 1,019 games with the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Bruins and Devils. His career record stands at 501 wins, 350 losses, 161 ties and 14 overtime losses. The three-time Jack Adams Award winner won the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 2003. A third battle with cancer finally ended Pats life on November 19, 2010. He was a very disciplined coach and was honest with his players 100 percent of the time, said Lou Lamoriello, president and general manager of the Devils. He would gain their respect so that they would be accountable to themselves and their team. This caps off a tremendous career. McCreary was elected in the referee/linesman category. He officiated 1,700 regular season games, 282 playoff games and one All-Star game before ending his career in 2011. Internationally, McCreary worked the 1998 and 2002 Olympics, including the gold medal games at both tournaments. My dream was to play in the national hockey league, same as any other boy, said McCreary. After my junior career wound down, I was encouraged to go into refereeing and have a chance to stay in the game. Also part of this years Hall ceremonies were USA Today hockey reporter Kevin Allen, the winner of the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for excellence in hockey journalism, and Chicago Blackhawks play-by-play announcer Pat Foley, who received the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for broadcasting. Dalvin Cook Jersey . The Hockey Canada Foundation is donating $50,000, with Hockey Quebec contributing $15,000. After defeating Florida in a shootout on Saturday, the Oilers have a week to sit on their two-game winning streak. We can definitely take some positives from this, coach Todd Nelson said. It was a good character win. The guys stuck with it.The Capitals, on the other hand, enter the break mired in a three-game skid after blowing a late lead at home against a team that has endured losing streaks of seven and nine games.I said to the guys, Maybe we dont make the playoffs, coach Barry Trotz said. There are some good teams out there.Washington has earned at least a point in 19 of its last 22 games. But that was of little consolation in a sombre locker room. Its just disappointing, defenceman Brooks Orpik said. Its the last-place team in the league, but its pretty obvious that any team can beat any team in this league if theyre fully committed.Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the opening 14 minutes for the Capitals, who held leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2 before the Oilers made one final push during the final five minutes of regulation.Purcell scored at 15:49 to make it 4-3, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tied it with a wrist shot at 18:53 after Fasth vacated the net for an extra skater.Derek Roy andd Nikita Nikitin also scored in regulation for Edmonton.ddddddddddddThere were a couple of times in the second (period) that I think we were thinking that theres no chance we should even be in this game, Purcell said. We hung around and found a way.Ovechkin has five goals in his last three games and 27 for the season. It was his seventh multi-goal game of the season and 92nd of his career, one short of the franchise record held by Peter Bondra.Ovechkin would have felt a lot better about that if his two strikes came in a winning effort. We had to forget about it and get ready for the most important time of the season, he said.Ovechkin put Washington up 1-0 at 1:48 of the first period, firing a slap shot over Fasths left shoulder during a delayed penalty.Ovechkin scored again at 13:58 following an interference call on Edmontons Jeff Petry. The slap shot, fired from the left circle, smashed the goalie camera that hangs from the back of the net.Held to one shot on goal over the first 14 minutes, the Oilers closed to 2-1 when Roy scored at 14:51.Jay Beagle restored the two-goal cushion at 17:34 when he deflected a shot by John Carlson into the net. It was Beagles seventh goal of the season, a new career high.Nikitin got a power-play goal at 19:56 of the second period, firing a lengthy slap shot just three seconds after Matt Niskanen was sent to the penalty box for kneeing Roy.Nicklas Backstrom made it 4-2 at 6:38 of the third period, deflecting a shot by Carlson past Fasth. The lead wouldnt last.Theres a point we gave away, Trotz said.Notes: Edmonton swept the season series, 2-0, with its first win in Washington since 2009. ... FORT MYERS, Fla. - Chris Capuano has had his first workout with the Boston Red Sox. The team announced the left-handers signing Saturday after he passed a physical. Capuano gets a one-year contract for $2.25 million after spending the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Joining the Red Sox is a homecoming for the pitcher who grew up in West Springfield, Mass. He said that played a part in his decision to sign with Boston. The Red Sox plan to use Capuano in relief and as a sixth starter if the need arises for one. Fenway Park is one of the stadiums where he hasnt pitched as a major leaguer, although he pitched and played left field there during a high school all-star game between teams from Massachusetts and Connecticut. The ceremony will take place prior to the Kings January 17 game against Anaheim. It may be a new stadium, but the San Francisco 49ers are hoping the results dont change against the Chicago Bears. The Niners will play their first regular-season game at Levis Stadium on Sunday night hoping to avoid their first home loss to the Bears in nearly 29 years. San Francisco leads its all-time series with Chicago 32-29-1 including playoffs and has won each of its past eight home games versus the Bears. Chicago has not picked up a victory in San Francisco since Oct. 13, 1985. The Niners have won two in a row in this series and dominated the Bears 32-7 when the clubs last met on Nov. 19, 2012 in a clash on Monday night. That contest saw San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick make his first career start as he took over the reigns from Alex Smith and never looked back. He threw for 243 yards and a pair of touchdowns to pace the Niners as they outgained the Bears 353-143. With Chicago starting quarterback Jay Cutler out due to a concussion, Jason Campbell was sacked six times, with 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith credited with 5 1/2 sacks. Smith, though, missed last weeks opener as he serves a nine-game suspension for violating the leagues drug policy, while inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman is out while recovering from a torn ACL. That didnt stop the defense from dominating the Dallas Cowboys in a 28-17 win as it intercepted Tony Romo three straight times and turned four Cowboy turnovers into 21 points. That included a fumble recovery by cornerback Chris Culliver who took it 35 yards for a score just three plays into the game. "This game was about steel in the spine. When it comes to 49er players, thats where they excel," said San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh. Kaepernick went 16-of-23 for 201 yards with a pair of touchdown passes to Vernon Davis, while Frank Gore and rookie Carlos Hyde combined for 113 yards on the ground. Hyde also scored his first NFL touchdown. San Francisco has won 15 of its past 20 home openers, including all three under Harbaugh, and Kaepernick doesnt think that playing in a brand-new stadium will distract the team. "I think everyones focused on Chicago," he said. "I dont think were worried about having our first game here. Were worried about trying to get this win." The Bears also are worried about getting a win as they lost a 23-20 game in overtime to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1. Chicago overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half and forced extra time on Robbie Goulds 37-yard field goal with 30 seconds left in regulation, but Buffalo got a 38-yard run by back Fred Jackson in overtime that set up Dan Carpenters game-winning 27-yard boot. Jay Cutler completed 34-of-49 passes for 349 yards with a pair of touchdowns, but also was intercepted twice. Brandon Marshall had eight catches for 71 yards with a score, but had a fumble. The Bills turned three Bears turnovers into 13 points. "I thought the offensive line did a great job. Turnovers hurt us, penalties hurt us. We just kept stubbing our toe on certain things throughout the game," Cutler said. "Overall, we just didnt get the job done offensively." Alshon Jeffery caught five passes for 71 yards while being limited by a hamstring injury and Martellus Bennett hauled in eight throws for 70 yards and a score. Matt Forte carried the ball 17 times for 82 yards and added 87 yards receiving on eight catches. WHAT TO WATCH FOR The 49ers secondary will have its hands full with Marshall and Jeffery, but both Bears wide receiverrs are hobbled and considered day-to-day.dddddddddddd Jefferys hamstring injury limited his role in last Sundays loss, while Marshall finished the game but sustained an ankle issue. That could be good news for a San Francisco club that had a pair of cornerbacks in Culliver (concussion) and Tramaine Brock (toe) miss practice on Wednesday. Even though San Francisco remains without Smith and Bowman, Cutler could still find himself facing some heavy pressure due to a banged-up offensive line. Both guard Matt Slauson and center Roberto Garza suffered ankle injuries versus the Bills that has their status for this game in doubt. Telling is the Bears re-signing of offensive lineman Eben Britton on Tuesday, though rookie guard Michael Ola and center Brian de la Puente remain in line to start in place of Slauson and Garza if needed. "It would have been great to have them in there," Bears right tackle Jordan Mills said of Slauson and Garza after Sundays loss, "but unfortunately, they got injured. Just like (Bears head coach Marc) Trestman says, Depth is key. We expect if anyone goes down - me or anyone else, whoever comes in to replace us, we expect them to play like a starter. Like I said before, de la and Ola did a great job replacing Garza and Slauson. It was unfortunate that two of our starters and leaders went down, but they came in and did a great job." They certainly performed well enough for Forte to have a solid game as he was the first Bears player since 2000 to have 80-plus rushing and 80-plus receiving yards in the same game. Bears defensive end Jared Allen has a sack and forced fumble in two straight meetings with the Niners and will be one of the players counted on to contain Kaepernick. "Hes an extremely explosive player, as explosive as they get in this league," Trestman said of Kaepernick on Chicagos website. "He can not only throw well in the pocket, he can throw outside the pocket." While Kaepernick got some good lucks to tight end Davis, he was helped by a running game that saw Hyde serve as a solid pairing with Gore. The rookie Hyde averaged 7.1 yards per carry on seven attempts to help keep Gore fresh. His presence will only benefit Gore, who managed 66 yards to eclipse 10,000 for his career. "Was very pleased with Carlos," said Harbaugh. "Thought he had some explosive runs. Hit the hole very well. Was good in his blocking and his pass protection. And also things that hes going to learn from in this game, two, three things right off the bat. You dip your toe in and you understand that theres improvements to make." One player who will need to improve on history in this game will be Cutler, who has thrown for 537 yards and one touchdown to six interceptions in two previous meetings with the Niners, posting a 52.5 passer rating. OVERALL ANALYSIS The spotlight of a primetime game will be on both clubs as they christen Levis Stadium, and the Bears will be aiming to play spoiler. That will be easier said than done against a 49ers team played solid against the pass last week. The Bears will need to get Forte going early after seeing Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray run for over 100 yards versus San Francisco. Getting Forte moving on the ground could also limit the mistakes that Cutler is prone to make, but San Francisco is just too good on defense not to get to the Bears quarterback and the offense will capitalize on a mistake or two made by the Bears.
